Why We Can’t Look Away From Our Screens - The New York Times
In a new book, “Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked,” the social psychologist Adam Alter warns that many of us — youngsters, teenagers, adults — are addicted to modern digital products. Not figuratively, but literally addicted.

Atari: Game Over #1 - YouTube
http://youtu.be/_MT_msVoRAg &! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW6OP4ccsNk - min 20 'ATARI committed suicide by trying to sell another 10m units into an already saturated market (with little innovation, new ground breaking hw model). It could sell more stuff, had all this inventory and huge staff (expenses) that ate up less and less cash flow till it ran into a loss of 500m in its last year. During its heyday, corporate boggle heads ran the shop, who were not interested into investing and pushing the envelope and risking a little (known risks, curtailed/mitigated) ... didn't need to risk the shop. ... But after all it was the beginning of the home entertainment that are now video games. And history has shown, that the innovator (first out of the door) does not always win the whole game/industry. See modern Silicon Valley examples in MySpace, Bebo, Friendster, .... Atari also was a corner stone of Silicon Valley of today; casual and a meritocracy (if you exclude gender & minorities).

No skin thick enough: The daily harassment of women in the game industry | Polygon
the internet brings out the worst in people and society - because it is frictionless. wait 10 year and we hope we died 10 years ago. // ""You don’t really recover from this kind of abuse. You just change." She’s right. Often, I’ll see people lashing out at women they perceive as too bitchy or too confrontational. They don’t understand that we are the sum of our experiences. The toxic environment causes us to change. If people attack you online, you’re going to get defensive quickly. If people sexually harass you, you’re going to grow more inward, and more protective. It’s a very human reaction, and there is no way to face this daily reality without it changing who you are."

[A] new paradigm for professional artistry. We’re entering a new era in history: the space between “starving artist” and “rich and famous” is beginning to collapse. YouTube has signed up over a million partners (people who agree to run ads over their videos to make money from their content). The “creative class” is no longer emerging: it’s here, now. We, the creative class, are finding ways to make a living making music, drawing webcomics, writing articles, coding games, recording podcasts. Most people don’t know our names or faces. We are not on magazine covers at the grocery store. We are not rich, and we are not famous. We are the mom and pop corner store version of “the dream.” If Lady Gaga is McDonald’s, we’re Betty’s Diner. And we’re open 24/7. We have not “made it.” We’re making it. EA’s Stock Is Riding High(ish) Again, but Did Titanfall Do Enough? | Re/code
That digital overtake last year was driven by growth both in mobile games like The Simpsons: Tapped Out and console games with microtransactions baked in, like the then-current soccer title FIFA 13. However, Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment pointedly declined to include microtransactions in its game, but will have some paid downloadable content starting this month.

BBC News - Google buys up games controller firm Green Throttle Games
Mobile Market is saturated. Now comes the fight for the living room and making the living room/TV/Movie/Surfing experience more like 21st Century. And cable companies (middle man) will become obsolete in the coming years. "More recently, the company announced the low-cost Chromecast dongle. The device allows content from a mobile device to be played out on a television. Joining Google from Green Throttle Games will be co-founders Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend. Mr Townsend was lead engineer for the Palm Pilot, a pioneering handheld device. + http://pando.com/2014/03/11/google-buys-the-ghost-of-green-throttle-games-as-tv-arms-race-gathers-speed/

It's official: Comcast and Time Warner Cable announce $45.2B merger | VentureBeat | Business | by Jordan Novet
Comcast and Time Warner Cable are the largest and second-largest cable providers in the U.S., respectively. [...] federal regulators could challenge the deal, just as they have pushed back on mergers of big mobile service providers such as AT&T and T-Mobile. + The Tek 0096: Comcast & Time Warner Wouldn't Hurt a Fly + http://youtu.be/5UbanGbiEPA?t=9m9s + 30:06min in - all this comes back to the fight of the Middleman to try hardest to stay relevant in the future of distribution of digital content. Whether it be music, movies, tv, tv-series, and any other digital content. The future is about b2c, currently its about b2b2c. The middleman will fall away, but it is fighting back.
