UK towns ‘polarised’ by rise of far right | UK news | The Guardian
But Khan said her investigations had detected a sense Britain was on the cusp of a fresh wave of rightwing extremism: “This backs up what experts have been telling me – that we are seeing a new wave of the far right: modernised, professionalised and growing; supported by a frightening amount of legal online extremist material.” [...] Metropolitan police’s Neil Basu, told the home affairs select committee that far-right extremists and Islamists were “feeding each other” and that police were currently presiding over 700 live terrorism investigations. [...] Home Office data shows that white people now constitute the largest proportion of arrested terrorism suspects for the first time in 13 years. Meanwhile, the number of people referred to the government’s counter-extremism programme, Prevent, because of concerns over rightwing extremism has grown by more than a quarter.

"To refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain 'the last best hope of earth' for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.

French public sector workers protest against Macron budget cuts | World news | The Guardian
It was the latest in a series of street demonstrations against Macron’s pro-business agenda – after unions and hauliers demonstrated against changes to loosen labour laws and pensioners protested over taxes. The demonstrations have so far been fragmented, with a lower turnout than other major strikes in recent years.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Can Emmanuel Macron solve France's economic riddle? | Larry Elliott | Business | The Guardian
Seen from this perspective, Macron does not offer radical centrism but more of the same. By seeing France’s problems as stemming from a lack of supply-side reform rather than from a shortage of demand, he is setting himself up to fail. The difference is that if Macron fails to deliver on his promises, the Front National will be able to mount an even stronger challenge for the presidency in 2022 than it has this time. That’s why the stakes for Macron are so high.

Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

Ministers announced last month that the numbers arriving under the system, introduced through an amendment by the Labour peer Alf Dubs, a former kindertransport refugee, would be capped at 350. A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. [ Globalisation as a great rebalancing of the world economy between the west and the rest (BRIC and co) ] [...] Only government can provide the cure, with a commitment to invest where the private sector cannot or will not go.

Up to 70% of people in developed countries 'have seen incomes stagnate' | Business | The Guardian
Research by the McKinsey Global Institute found that between 65% and 70% of people in 25 advanced countries saw no increase in their earnings between 2005 and 2014. The report found there had been a dramatic increase in the number of households affected by flat or falling incomes and that today’s younger generation was at risk of ending up poorer than their parents. Only 2% of households, 10 million people, lived through the period from 1993 to 2005 – a time of strong growth and falling unemployment – without seeing their incomes rise.

When Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, amid the triumph of Soviet collapse, an aide slipped Mr Fukuyama’s essay on history into her papers. The next morning she declared herself unimpressed. But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. Turkish officials: Europe wanted to export extremists to Syria
Officials point to Europeans arriving in Turkey with weapons and on watchlisted passports and say warnings were ignored. Turkish officials have accused European governments of attempting to export their Islamic extremist problem to Syria, saying the EU has failed to secure its own borders or abide by pledges to share intelligence and cooperate in fighting the jihadist threat.

The failures were outlined by Turkish officials to the Guardian through several documented instances of foreign fighters leaving Europe while travelling on passports registered on Interpol watchlists, arriving from European airports with luggage containing weapons and ammunition, and being freed after being deported from Turkey despite warnings that they have links to foreign fighter networks.

IS in Europe: The race to the death
The BBC's Panorama programme has seen the transcripts of some important interrogations carried out by France's equivalent of MI5, the DGSI. They reveal valuable details about the tactics used by Abaaoud to train and equip IS fighters in Europe. [...] Nicolas Moreau was one them. He was arrested in 2015 having left Nantes to fight jihad in Syria in 2014.
He, like many IS recruits, was a former petty criminal who had converted to Islam in prison and become disillusioned with life in France.
He told his interrogators he couldn't stand the "injustice" and "couldn't see any future in this country".
He went on to provide valuable information about IS's external operations department known as Amni, meaning "security", that sends hand-picked trained fighters back to Europe to inflict death and destruction on their homelands.
"Each gets 50,000 euros (£40,000) to mount an attack," Moreau said.

François Hollande warns Calais camps could move to Britain | Politics | The Guardian
French president says after summit with David Cameron there will be ‘consequences’ if UK votes to leave EU [...] Other European leaders weighed in to endorse Hollande’s warning. Wolfgang Schäuble, the German finance minister, speaking at the LSE on a visit to London, said: “Imagine the negotiations that will have to take place after a Brexit decision – for years to come, all this bureaucratic stuff. Good luck! The European Union has trade agreements with 60 other nation states. The UK would have to renegotiate all those trade agreements – again, good luck.” //&!
[...] Pro Nacht schaffen es zehn nach Großbritannien

Google unpaid taxes: France seeks €1.6bn from search giant - BBC News
The figure is substantially more than the £130m the search engine agreed to pay in back taxes to UK authorities. However, France's AFP news agency reported that Google might be able to negotiate and may not pay the full sum. The company's chief executive, Sundar Pichai, is visiting Paris and was due to meet the France's economy minister Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday night. It is not clear if they will discuss the tax issue. Earlier this month, French Finance Minister Michel Sapin ruled out striking a deal with the US company. [...] [ HMRC's VIP deals ] Brussels investigates Europe's competition authorities have been examining whether some deals struck by big companies with national tax authorities amount to illegal state aid. Starbucks and Fiat Chrysler were told they must pay back up to €30m (£22m) in taxes after European tax breaks were ruled illegal.

UK to send five ships to Baltic as part of Nato buildup against Russia | Politics | The Guardian
Britain will also contribute troops to a new 6,000-strong force that is intended to act as a deterrent [...] After years of steady military withdrawal from Europe since the end of the cold war, the US last week announced a quadrupling of military spending to $3.4bn (£2.35bn) to increase its presence in Europe as a counter to Russia. The UK contribution, though modest by comparison, is still significant given the extent to which the navy has been reduced after years of cutbacks.

France to overhaul secularism teaching to help stop radicalisation | World news | The Guardian
The French principle of secularism has been twisted by politicians and so often wrongly used to attack Islam that schoolchildren have been left baffled, the French education minister has warned. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told the Guardian that after last year’s devastating jihadi attacks in Paris, France was overhauling the teaching of secularism and civic values as part of the country’s drive against terrorism and radicalisation. “We have to reappropriate the concept of laïcité [secularism] so we can explain to our young pupils that whatever their faith, they belong to this idea and they’re not excluded. Secularism is not something against them; it protects them,” she said.

'Jungle' migrants prepare to move - 100 metres away - BBC News
The compound is fenced off from the rest of the camp, and those who move in will have to use a hand-scanning device to get in and out. This has led to fears, apparently without justification, it is some kind of internment facility where fingerprints will be taken and migrants forced to register for asylum, robbing them of their chance to make it to the UK. "They said you are allowed to go in and out at any time at all, but there's a fence," says Adam Mohammed al-Diko, who represents the camp's small Ghanaian community. "And we don't have any experience of a door where you fingerprint your hand before you go in. We have never heard of this thing."

Hungarian PM says UK must alter tax credits plan for EU citizens | Politics | The Guardian
In a sign of the strength of feeling in eastern and central Europe over the proposed ban, Viktor Orbán said Hungarians should not be described as migrants anywhere in the EU, and said Cameron’s EU reform proposals must not be discriminatory. Orbán made his remarks at an upbeat press conference with his British counterpart in Budapest, in which he said he agreed with three out of the four reform proposals that Britain has tabled. His only disagreement is over the plan to ban EU workers from claiming in-work benefits for four years.
