Paddy Jackson’s revived rugby career is a backward step for feminism | Lara Whyte | Opinion | The Guardian
But the question needs to be asked: if being part of a conversation that appears to describe a woman’s body as a merry-go-round doesn’t get you banned from professional sports, then what progress have we made? What have the feminists and those seeking equality gained to prompt such a vicious backlash? And if it’s just a backlash of toxic masculinity and misogyny in response to no measurable progress for women, then we are, in fact, going backwards.

What has the Women’s March accomplished, beyond mere visibility? | Jessa Crispin | Opinion | The Guardian
Women’s March // Advertisement

Since its inception, Women’s March has faced criticism by many within the feminist community. The March and its participants, we heard from many critics, marginalized Native women, disabled women, women of color, trans women and Jewish women to present a very safe, white, middle of the road protest. [...] Others called the organization out for not having any real agenda, and for focusing solely on what it was against – the Trump administration and Republican control of Congress – and not what it was for. This is a common problem for organizations that begin as protest movements.

Shock! Jennifer Lawrence's dress is not a symbol of all feminism | Opinion | The Guardian
One of the most pleasing things of recent years is the resurgent profile of feminism in the mainstream. But what’s been lost somewhat is that There isn’t One Type of Feminism, and just because intra-debate occurs, doesn’t mean that everything starts collapsing, like a huge chunk of iceberg falling off into the sea.

Are the women speaking up about sexual assault taking down celebrities or the patriarchy? / LGBTQ Nation
Within a patriarchal society that transmits distorted binary gender extremes, questions inevitably arise: How dare women demand their reproductive freedoms, which would reduce or even take away my (the male) making the decision whether to carry or abort my genetic offspring? How dare a woman choose not to marry a man? How dare women compete with me for a high social position?
How dare gay men think of coming onto me? How dare trans men take on the privileges by transitioning that I have “earned” from birth? How dare trans women relinquish male privilege and betray their gender (read as betray patriarchy itself)? How dare intersex people not choose to “become either one or the other”?
Toxic forms of hypermasculinity require the promotion and use of firearms to keep at bay the intensive psychosocial compulsive fear and dread of penetration from bullets, and by extension the gaze of gay and bisexual men, and the female gaze since patriarchy promises males the right to the aggressive outward intrusive gaze, the right of penetration of “others.” And when patriarchal social and family structures converge with patriarchal religious systems, which reinforce strictly defined gender hierarchies of male domination, women and girl’s oppression and oppression of those who transgress sexual-, sexuality-, and gender binaries and boundaries became inevitable.

Cam Newton's sexism controversy is the perfect parable for our time | Sport | The Guardian
How is this story – a workplace matter that really should’ve been resolved privately – even a thing, you ask? Because conflict, in black and white, still makes the most compelling spectacle. Sports have promoted them so well over the years that, well, it was just a matter of time before the less entertaining areas of life got in the game. And so people like CNBC’s Jim Cramer further divided stocks and bonds into winners and losers. Politics are less about issues than optics, as much for the newsmakers as the networks vying to see how many pundits they can cram onto their pre- and post-game show desks. Outrage culture is all the rage, and so the news never rests. No story, however false the premise or equivalency, is too small. This story, suddenly the week’s biggest NFL headline, is proof.

UN report attacks austerity budgets for growing inequality | Business | The Guardian
Austerity budgets adopted by governments across the world since the 2008 financial crash are to blame for undermining the job security of millions of workers and threatening the progress made by women in the workplace, according to a UN report. [...] The report argued that giving women access to decent employment could only be achieved if governments maintained investment in affordable childcare facilities and care for the elderly. When they make steep cuts in early-years education and healthcare provision they are effectively asking women to pick up the slack, it said.

An Open Letter to Those Praising the New York Times “Tomboy” Piece
Trans youth are dying because society is telling them, telling us, that we are fake. Trans women and femmes of color are being murdered because the impulse is to believe that trans-ness is fraudulent, that our bodies are threats. A white young person being asked questions about her gender is not a new problem and it is not a problem that should be blamed on trans people or trans affirmative shifts in society or medicine.
Midway through the piece, the author offers the most incoherent part of her argument explaining of her child, “She is not gender nonconforming. She is gender role nonconforming.” What does this mean? What is the difference?

I went through the menopause at 24 - BBC Three
I’m 27 now and I feel like less of a woman now my body doesn’t work like it used to. Look away now if you’re squeamish as this might be TMI, but one of the side effects of the menopause is that my vagina can get very dry, which can make the thought of having sex with a new person seriously intimidating. I feel like cancer has taken my femininity away from me.

evolutionary psychology explanation: in more patriarchal societies, women wear less make-up (middle east v western world) make-up is a signal of equality. why do women wear make-up? Germany wants refugees to integrate or lose residency rights
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said he is planning a new law that will require refugees to learn German and integrate into society, or else lose their permanent right of residence.

The initiative comes after voters punished Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives in regional elections earlier this month, giving a thumbs-down to her open-door refugee policy and turning in droves to the anti-immigrant party Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Jenny Beavan’s Oscars outfit struck a blow for all women | Laura Bates | Opinion | The Guardian
This was not the first stand taken against the reduction of women in the industry to their clothes and jewellery. The past few years have seen Elisabeth Moss give the middle finger to the “mani-cam” at the Golden Globes, Cate Blanchett demand: “Do you do that to the guys?” as a camera panned up and down her body on the red carpet, and a series of women from Reese Witherspoon to Amy Poehler demand that reporters ask them more than questions about their frocks. We’ve also seen the actress and singer Zendaya speak out about racist responses to her dreadlocks at the Oscars, and Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy design her own dresses after designers refused to dress her, proving that Hollywood’s incredibly narrow definition of beauty is discriminatory on the basis of size and race. [...] find themselves pitted against each other in excruciating “best dressed” and “worst dressed” lists, the awards season will continue to provide a high-profile, glossy microcosm of wider prejudice.

Pando: Female founders, and when good intentions go bad

He told me that I needed to soften my image and tone down my language if I wanted Pando to appeal to more readers in middle America. They don’t like to see an opinionated, mouthy woman swearing. He meant well. But the comment wasn’t too different than an email I got after a recent appearance on Fox News on a Sunday morning, which told me my points were incredibly smart, but this viewer simply couldn’t take any woman seriously unless she wore a string of pearls. Get the Davos look: what Sheryl Sandberg teaches us about power dressing | Fashion | The Guardian
There is a maddening can’t-win-either-way unfairness in criticising Sandberg for not wearing warmer clothes – I am pretty sure that if she’d worn salopettes and moon boots, that would have grabbed the headlines even more firmly. [...] Sandberg, like all the men around her, power-dressed. She chose clothes to project competence, seniority, excellence. [...] Sheryl Sandberg has a clear formula for what she wears: fitted dresses, medium-height heels, block colours in the blue-red-purple arc. Not yellow, not pink, no print. No jewellery apart from earrings. It is remarkably consistent. Interestingly, there is not a single sentence in her book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, about what to wear. Her strategy is to neutralise this conversation with a consistent look which is easily recognisable as the uniform of the 21st century female in the public eye. It is a kind of bland, business-lounge glamour: the fitted dress, the court shoes, the colour palette, the clean lines and ...
