Minimum alcohol pricing plan 'may breach EU law' - BBC News
[MPU] legislation is significantly to restrict the market, and this might be avoided by the introduction of a tax measure designed to increase the price of alcohol instead of a measure imposing a minimum price per unit of alcohol." [...] /// Instead it says increasing the tax on alcohol tax could be justified as it would combat alcohol misuse and wouldn't restrict the market. /// [...] Alison Douglas, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland [...] minimum pricing was a better measure than alcohol taxes, which are "limited in their ability to raise the price of the cheapest alcohol to a level that will actually reduce harm". [SWA] had "blocked the democratic will of the Scottish Parliament and sacrificed public health to protect their members' profits".

BBC News - Mesh implants 'as dangerous as asbestos' US lawyer tells MSPs
He told MSPs that studies into the safety of mesh have been influenced by manufacturers, who enjoy a "close relationship" with regulators of the products. 'High risk' The lawyer said thousands of women in the US are suing both manufacturers and doctors on the grounds that mesh devices are defective or that there was a failure to warn them about the dangers and complications. The US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), indicated last April that it plans to reclassify mesh for pelvic organ prolapse as "high risk", but is yet to do so.

the FDA found (among many other results) that 65 percent of chicken breasts and 44 percent of ground beef carried bacteria resistant to tetracycline, and 11 percent of pork chops carried bacteria resistant to five classes of drugs. Meat transports those bacteria into your kitchen, if you do not handle it very carefully, and into your body if it is not thoroughly cooked—and resistant infections result. +

Surprise: Organic Apples And Pears Aren't Free Of Antibiotics : The Salt : NPR
wo antibiotics, streptomycin and oxytetracycline, as vital weapons in the fight to control the disease ( fire blight ) — even on organic apples and pears. [...] About 80 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. go to livestock — not just to treat disease and prevent infections, but also, primarily, to help animals put on more weight. [...] That heavy usage has been widely blamed for promoting the spread of antibiotic-resistant bugs. And resistance can jump from bacteria that infect livestock to microbes that sicken people. The problem of drug resistance has led to widespread calls for reining in the use of antibiotics on farms, in order to preserve the medicines' effectiveness in treating human disease. [...] Any residue on fruit, she says, is minuscule. [Still - its like chronic low-grade inflammation.]

'Monsanto Protection Act' slips silently through US Congress — RT USA
The US House of Representatives quietly passed a last-minute addition to the Agricultural Appropriations Bill for 2013 last week - including a provision protecting genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks. [...] Previously discovered pathogens in Monsanto’s Roundup Ready corn and soy are suspected of causing infertility in livestock and to impact the health of plants. + >> Anger is growing against President Barack Obama the day after he signed into law a spending bill that included a provision opponents have dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act.”

Regulators Discover a Hidden Viral Gene in Commercial GMO Crops
Is There a Direct Human Toxicity Issue?
When Gene VI is intentionally expressed in transgenic plants, it causes them to become chlorotic (yellow), to have growth deformities, and to have reduced fertility in a dose-dependent manner (Ziljstra et al 1996). Plants expressing Gene VI also show gene expression abnormalities. These results indicate that, not unexpectedly given its known functions, the protein produced by Gene VI is functioning as a toxin and is harmful to plants (Takahashi et al 1989). Since the known targets of Gene VI activity (ribosomes and gene silencing) are also found in human cells, a reasonable concern is that the protein produced by Gene VI might be a human toxin. This is a question that can only be answered by future experiments.

Could eating burnt toast stunt your unborn baby's growth? | Mail Online
clear link between acrylamide in food and the health of newborn babies.

study, published in the peer-reviewed Environmental Health Perspectives journal,

Researchers say the largest source of acrylamide in the Bradford mums-to-be diet was chips.

‘Our advice to them is to replace crisps and chips with vegetables and fruit. The food industry must also explore effective ways of reducing acrylamide levels in its products.’

Unfortunately, this poison forms naturally in carbohydrate-rich, starchy foods when they’re fried, baked, grilled, toasted or roasted at temperatures greater than 120c.

Crisps and chips are the worst offenders, but crispbreads, many breakfast cereals, biscuits, coffee and bread also contain acrylamide, albeit in lesser amounts, so, too, does burnt toast.

the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers acrylamide so toxic that it has set the safe level for human consumption at almost zero.

The looming zoonotic danger – Global Public Square - Blogs

We've seen an unprecedented rise in infectious diseases in recent decades, 75 percent of which are “zoonotic,” meaning they come from animals. About 300 new animal-to-human diseases have emerged in the last 60 years.

This summer, the International Livestock Research Institute released a report estimating that zoonotic diseases cause 2.5 billion cases of human illness each year and 2.7 million human deaths worldwide. Most of these illnesses and deaths are caused by diseases spread from farm animals.

Meanwhile, we’ve seen a dramatic spike in pork and poultry production. Tens to hundreds of thousands of caged animals under a single roof allow for zoonotic diseases to emerge, amplify and spread. Of all the emerging threats, the greatest concern is influenza, the only known virus with the potential to infect millions of people within months.

NFA - is Industries self-regulating body
National Futures Association (NFA) is the industrywide, self-regulatory organization for the U.S. futures industry

BBA - is Industries self-regulating / oversight body
British Bankers’ Association
"The BBA is the leading trade association for the UK banking and financial services sector. We speak for over 200 member banks from 60 countries on the full range of UK and international banking issues."

Industry bodies, regulating its own Industry (including revolving door between companies and regulator) is (looks very much to be) the weakest link in regulating/overseeing any industry.

Another example is the FDA (USA) where most safety studies are funded by the companies itself and the existence of a revolving door. Also a lack of expertise and personal is apparent too.

Sugar makes you stupid: Study shows high-fructose diet sabotages learning, memory
"Our findings illustrate that what you eat affects how you think," said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science. "Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage."

While earlier research has revealed how fructose harms the body through its role in diabetes, obesity and fatty liver, this study is the first to uncover how the sweetener influences the brain.

"We're concerned about high-fructose corn syrup that is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative."

Safety Alerts Cite Cholesterol Drugs’ Side Effects -
Federal health officials on Tuesday added new safety alerts to the prescribing information for statins, the cholesterol-reducing medications that are among the most widely prescribed drugs in the world, citing rare risks of memory loss, diabetes and muscle pain.

It is the first time that the Food and Drug Administration has officially linked statin use with cognitive problems like forgetfulness and confusion, although some patients have reported such problems for years. Among the drugs affected are huge sellers like Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor and Vytorin.

But federal officials and some medical experts said the new alerts should not scare people away from statins. “The value of statins in preventing heart disease has been clearly established,”

Note: Medicine is and should be a helping hand with a short/medium time horizon. Medicine should not be the solution.

Canadian-made HIV vaccine approved for human testing | CTV News
The virus has been genetically engineered to be "non-pathogenic," meaning it can't actually cause HIV in recipients. The idea is the vaccine would prime the body's T-cells to destroy any cells that might become infected with HIV.

So far, the vaccine has been shown to stimulate a strong immune response in preliminary toxicology tests in lab animals, the university reports. But it will be several years before researchers know whether it's effective in humans.

The World Health Organization estimates that 34 million people are living with HIV around the world, and that 2.7 million people are newly infected every year.

Lilly, Novo Diabetes Drugs Get Cancer Scrutiny - Bloomberg
A debate on the potential dangers of GLP-1 therapies, the class of drugs to which Byetta and Victoza belong, will be a highlight of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference in Lisbon this week. A review of a database of side effects showed patients taking Byetta and a Merck & Co. drug had a sixfold increased chance of pancreatitis, which in turn raises the risk of tumors, researchers led by Robert Elashoff of the University of California at Los Angeles said this year. The manufacturers say the treatments are safe and there’s no evidence of increased cancer risk. Sales of GLP-1 analogues, which mimic a hormone called GLP-1 to stimulate natural insulin production in diabetics, are increasing as doctors seek alternatives to older drugs for a disease that affects 346 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

YouTube - ‪TEDxAustin Robyn O'Brien 2011‬‏
Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring.
About this speaker
Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded and ...  The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich."

F.D.A. Unveils New Rules About Sunscreen Claims -
The F.D.A. said sunscreens must protect equally against two kinds of the sun’s radiation, UVB and UVA, to earn the coveted designation of offering “broad spectrum” protection. UVB rays cause burning; UVA rays cause wrinkling; and both cause cancer.
The rules, which go into effect in a year, will also ban sunscreen manufacturers from claiming their products are waterproof or sweatproof because such claims are false. Instead, they will be allowed to claim in minutes the amount of time in which the product is water resistant, depending upon test results.
And only sunscreens that have a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 15 or higher will be allowed to maintain that they help prevent sunburn and reduce the risks of skin cancer and early skin aging.
