Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.

It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.

The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.

That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Foreign-owned firms up to three times more productive than UK-backed rivals
The ONS said it cannot tell from this data whether the companies are more productive because they have foreign owners, or whether it is simply that foreign investors buy into businesses that are already highly productive.
The gap is smaller - but still substantial - in agricultural, construction, manufacturing and production businesses. Small firms with foreign owners are just over twice as productive as those with British shareholders, while mid-sized firms create 85.7pc more output per hour worked if they have foreign investors.
The study of 2016 data showed a strong link in most industries, although the correlation was less marked in construction.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

The truth about the Conservative manifesto? No new funding for schools and hospitals and more austerity | The Independent
But now we know: she couldn’t give an answer because there was actually no extra spending that needed to be paid for. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has calculated that the £8bn of NHS spending is merely a continuation of the path for health spending set out in the 2015 Spending Review and implicitly assumed to be extended in the 2017 March Budget. The IFS thinks the same thing is happening in schools spending, although with the added mischief that the £4bn figure is in cash terms, so unadjusted for expected inflation. //&! http://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/nhs-children-mental-health-services-cuts-or-closure-third-downsizing-survey-staff-conservatives-a7749616.html - Third of NHS children's mental health services 'face cuts or closure' Between 2010 and 2015, spending on children’s mental health services fell by nearly £50m – more than six per cent in real terms //&! http://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/nhs-world-ranking-uk-healthcare-worse-ireland-spain-slovenia-30th-lancet-a7744131.html - NHS is 'worse than healthcare in Ireland, Spain and Slovenia' in new global ranking UK scores total of 84.6 out of 100, placing it on an equal footing with Cyprus, Qatar, Malta, Portugal and the Czech Republic

NHS faces staggering increase in cost of elderly care, academics warn | Society | The Guardian
major new research which shows a 25% increase in those who will need care between 2015 and 2025.

Within eight years, there will be 2.8 million people over 65 needing nursing and social care, unable to cope alone, says the research – largely because of the toll of dementia in a growing elderly population. The research, published by the respected Lancet Public Health medical journal, says cases of disability related to dementia will rise by 40% among people aged 65 to 84, with other forms of disability increasing by about 31%. A summary of their study was discussed at the European Congress on Obesity.
The term "fat but fit" refers to the alluring theory that if people are obese but all their other metabolic factors such as blood pressure and blood sugar are within recommended limits then the extra weight will not be harmful. [...] They found these people who were obese but "metabolically healthy" were at higher risk of developing heart disease, strokes and heart failure than people of normal weight.

Are Britons falling out of love with booze? - BBC News
One of the problems with the ONS survey is that it is based on people's own recollections - and it is well known that we are terrible for underestimating our drinking.
But there is evidence to be found elsewhere that the fall in alcohol consumption is real.
The findings chime with a much longer running source - the British Beer and Pub Association's data on the sales of pure alcohol.
It shows in the early 1950s alcohol consumption per head was below four litres of pure alcohol a year - the equivalent of about 140 pints of beer.
In the following decades, that climbed, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s.
By 2004, it had peaked, topping 9.5 litres.
Since then though, it has fallen and is now back under eight litres.

The Bank of England is in denial. Brexit shows people don't act rationally | Robert Skidelsky | Business | The Guardian
Our models of quantifiable risk fail when faced with radical uncertainty. // retail spending binge post brexit and in run-up. // The challenge is to develop macroeconomic models that can work in stormy conditions: models that incorporate radical uncertainty and therefore a high degree of unpredictability in human behaviour. [...] Keynes, for his part, didn’t think this way at all. He wanted an economics that would give full scope for judgment, enriched not only by mathematics and statistics, but also by ethics, philosophy, politics, and history – subjects dropped from contemporary economists’ training, leaving a mathematical and computational skeleton. To offer meaningful descriptions of the world, economists, he often said, must be well educated.

A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. [ Globalisation as a great rebalancing of the world economy between the west and the rest (BRIC and co) ] [...] Only government can provide the cure, with a commitment to invest where the private sector cannot or will not go.

We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.

Does The Myth of Meritocracy show us how to alleviate inequality?
No debate about social mobility is complete without reference to the supposedly halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s. The class fluidity of those decades, however, was not the result of professions becoming more meritocratic. It was caused by an unprecedented rise in the number of middle-class jobs: there was more room at the top. [...] Bloodworth writes that 21st-century society is characterised by a dwindling of professional jobs and more people slipping downwards: there is “more room at the bottom”. [...] Globalisation has created what the economist Robert H Frank calls “winner-takes-all” markets

The economics of Brexit – Politics Weekly podcast
Leave Campaign, so far, has failed to assure voters that we get through the quiet possible tubulences and uncertainty unharmed severely after 1-2 years. [ economic forecasts/predictions are Wall Streets cottage industry ] Brexit for sure would throw Osbornes plan for a surplus in 2020. ... brexit is about less regulation free trade low tariffs, 'get off the back of our City [London bank regulation]' [low tax, higher pay] George Osborne ... // banks have not voiced their voice loudly because that would be seen by people who bailed them out to tune of doubling the deficit, and still own bank shares ie loyds. it could be seen disingenuous, outrageous, as we are still in doldrums, paying off their debt, and suffering through austerity where the most vulnerable are cut away from society.

Ed Miliband says Panama Papers show ‘wealth does not trickle down’
'Since Reagan and Thatcher, the basic view has been, ‘Be nice to the super-rich and their wealth will trickle down.’ [...] In an interview with the Observer, he said he understood why David Cameron defended his father after the Panama revelations were leaked. “But for 30 years, since Reagan and Thatcher, the basic view has been, ‘Be nice to the super-rich and their wealth will trickle down.’ That is the big lesson of Panama for me. It doesn’t trickle down; it gets stashed.” The former Labour leader is helping to promote a new low-budget documentary, the Divide, which explores the wealth gap through seven families striving for a better life in Britain and the United States.

Achselzucken schadet

Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Hey Britain – Your Kids Have Just Been Privatised
"Thatcher said the problem with socialism is that you run out of other people money. Henry VIII will tell you the problem with crony capitalism is you eventually run out of other people’s assets to sell." [...] In George Osborne’s mercurial March 2016 budget he showed his own Machiavellian sleight of hand. He is now seen as a politician whose leadership ambitions come before the welfare of the British people. Osborne’s allegiance is to The City not the country. When he and Peter Mandelson holidayed on financier Nat Rothschild’s yacht do you think they talked about free school meals and increasing the economic opportunities of the people in Grimsby? [...] Look at his actions and we see that one of Osborne’s aims is to reinstate the class divisions that began to ebb away with socially progressive policies. This last budget sought to weave a line into the fabric of society between the haves and have-nots. [...] We are at the end of the debt cycle and there’s nowhere else to go. [...] This is not the budget for the next generation of young people. This is the budget for the next generation of rent-seekers, moneymen and crony capitalists.

The Privatising Industry in Europe
Do you wonder why the 'Troika' persists in its privatisation agenda despite the evidence of its failures and the growing economic and social costs?
The report “The Privatising Industry in Europe”, written by Sol Trumbo Vila and Matthijs Peters for the Transnational Institute, TNI, suggests two possible motives and shows who the ‪#‎BigWinners‬ of those privatisations are. - https://www.tni.org/en/publication/the-privatising-industry-in-europe - The rationale put forward by advocates of privatisation does not stand up to the evidence. Privatisation has failed to provide promised revenue as only profitable firms are being sold and consistently at undervalued prices. Meanwhile the latest research by the IMF and by European universities show that there is no evidence that the privatised firms are more efficient than state-owned firms. [...] Privatisation in Europe has encouraged a growth in corruption,
