‘We've dug ourselves a really deep hole’ – David Neiwert on the rise of the far right | World news | The Guardian
Nostalgia
“I mean, Trump’s all about ‘make America great again’. It’s this idea that this American exceptionalism will never die. And it has to die,” he says. He looks out of his window once more, over a neighbourhood partly buried under the glass, steel and concrete of the gentrifiers.

“It has to die because it’s killing us.”

For black women, cutting your hair off is political - as I and the star of a new Netflix drama well know | Fashion | The Guardian
The gravity of a black woman deciding to cut her hair off and go “natural” in a white supremacist society (yes, ours) should not be underestimated. Almost every black hairdresser I visited before finally plucking up the courage to cut my hair off told me I was making the wrong decision, but it was a reminder of how deeply entrenched these views are.
This isn’t just about looks: our wider history is stained by instances such as the apartheid-era pencil test in South Africa – those who could hold a pencil in their hair without it falling out could not be classified as white. To this day, black women and girls lose job offers and are sent to detention or are suspended because our hairstyles don’t suit white sensibilities.

Hillary Clinton's book has a clear message: don't blame me | Thomas Frank | Opinion | The Guardian
She seems to have been almost totally unprepared for the outburst of populist anger that characterized 2016, an outburst that came under half a dozen different guises: trade, outsourcing, immigration, opiates, deindustrialization, and the recent spectacle of Wall Street criminals getting bailed out. It wasn’t the issues that mattered so much as the outrage, and Donald Trump put himself in front of it. Clinton couldn’t. [...] But by and large, Clinton’s efforts to understand populism always get short-circuited, probably because taking it seriously might lead one to conclude that working people have a legitimate beef with her and the Democratic party. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41244474 &! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/12/hillary-clinton-supporters-memoir-book

Researchers have answered a big question about the decline of the middle class - The Washington Post
“This idea that we’re having this progression of increasing incomes over time — I think that might be true for the upper regions of the income distribution but not for the median,” said Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard University economist who was not involved in the study. [...] The implication, Guvenen argues, is that economists should search for explanations for households’ current financial woes in the youth and childhood of today’s workers.

“We are maybe looking at the wrong place for the solution to stagnation in wages and rising inequalities,” Guvenen said. “To understand higher inequality, we should turn and take a closer look at youth.” /// &! one comment https://redd.it/69zf27 said part to do w competition. if you don't work for that money, others will. labour pool available for some kind of work. already applicable in the auto industry in usa uk and germany.

US-Eltern meiden Adoption afroamerikanischer Kinder - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Dustin Hoffman on Oscars: ‘It’s always been racism’ | Page Six
Dustin Hoffman feels there’s a systemic racial problem in America that goes beyond the Oscars. [...] “It’s always been racism. It’s kind of a reflection of what the country is,” he said. Hoffman made the comments while attending the opening of the Metrograph, the first independently-owned movie theater to open in Manhattan in more than decade. “They call my era, the Golden Age of film, but I think the Golden Age of film still exists, but it’s done by the indies, and I think that is what this theater is for,” Hoffman said. As for his thoughts on what can bring more diversity to Hollywood: “We change when the people that are oppressed force it to change,” Hoffman said.

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

More Evidence Supporting the House of Debt | House of Debt
Many have argued that we overstate the importance of housing and household debt in explaining the Great Recession and weak recovery. They point to the banking crisis, policy uncertainty, or excessive regulation as equally or even more important. The data released today by the BEA show pretty clearly that the arguments we make in House of Debt remain relevant for thinking about economic weakness today. In our view, the explanation we provide is the most consistent with the striking difference in consumption across states. // From Comments: Without real median income rising you can’t grow in an economy based on debt expansion

This is crony capitalism at its worst. // same w GMO, Monsanto asked whitehouse (bush) to introduce stringent legislation and regulation about GMO research bc monanto knew it was ahead and didn't want any newcomers in, thus made through legislation, regulation and compliance cost, the barriers to entry artificially high, through its effective strong lobbying to introduce legislation & regulation to its liking.

What about all the ballyhoo about manufacturing jobs coming back to America? Well, some have. But they pay lousy wages. The average wages of production and non-supervisory employees in manufacturing are lower today than they were in 1985, when adjusted for inflation. [...] Bottom line: Most Americans have got zilch out of this recovery. In fact, they’re worse off now than they were in 2000. Meanwhile, the top 0.1 percent is doing fabulously well. More and more people are concluding the game is rigged -- which it is. No one should be surprised at the surge in populist anger on the left and the right.

Ceased all power and rendered the citizen powerless. This is no capitalistic democracy. This is crony capitalism. Capitalism has no internal constraints. remove external constraints & it will see & use everything (private free market enterprise) as replaceable & commodity w a price (even the planet): the environment, workers health. &! non-violent revolution! // Revolutions are internal affairs w different dynamic. All succesful revolutions are fundamentally non-violent. No revolution is successful until sizable internal protection/security defects (Whistleblower et al) and refuses to fight for the discredited regime/plutocracy/oligarchy/Elite/Super Rich/1%/Corporation/crony capitalism/tax evasion/tax avoidance and joins the revolution. // Living in truth & speaking the truth to power. Pulling people into the streets & discrediting the status quo. Dont pit people against each other. Essay. The power of the powerless // If we do not break it. We & our children have no future!
