april 2018 by asterisk2a
Scans of nearly 3,000 individuals from the UK Biobank research project showed that 12% had inflamed, fatty livers.
The British Liver Trust said the "very alarming" findings were a 'wake-up call' because the condition can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and death.

In search of surrogates, foreign couples descend on Ukraine - BBC News
february 2018 by asterisk2a
Foreign couples have been coming to this corner of Europe in droves since 2015, when surrogacy hotspots in Asia began closing their industries one-by-one, amid reports of exploitation. Barred from India, Nepal and Thailand, they turned to Ukraine, one of the few places left where surrogacy can still be arranged at a fraction of what it costs in the US.
"We have so many childless couples coming to our country - it's like a conveyor belt," says Ana, who asked for her identity to be protected.
When she was 21, and after some years of hotel work, Ana finally decided to become a surrogate. By then she had a daughter and realised she was eligible. Under Ukrainian law, a surrogate must have a child of their own before carrying someone else's. If you have your own child, you are less likely to become attached to the one you must give away, those who recruit the women say. [...] Europe's capital of surrogacy
Demand for surrogacy in Ukraine "has increased probably 1000% in the last two years alone," says Sam Everingham of Families Through Surrogacy, a Sydney-based charity that advises would-be parents.
The country, he adds, "has found itself almost accidentally as one of the handful of nation states" which allow surrogacy tourism.

Trained staff – carers – are what the sector lacks, not physical spaces in buildings. Urgent investment in trained, regulated carers is the only safe way to address this, not outsourcing the problem to random homeowners with no clearly defined standards for safeguarding, clinical governance and infection control, not to mention other risks to patients who are at their most vulnerable.

Council and NHS in £19.5m funding row over patients staying in hospital too long - Stoke Sentinel
october 2017 by asterisk2a
[first NHS Councils blame each other for little progress, now NHS Department withholding funds bc no progress from Council ] But now NHS England is threatening to withhold the cash (one tranche from the Better Care Fund) because the authority is failing to reduce its bed-blocking figures by ensuring care packages are in place. Council leaders say the target – cutting social care-related delayed transfers of care by two-thirds in eight weeks – was unrealistic and set at ‘extremely short notice’. Now they are lobbying the Government on the issue, and working with the local NHS to find alternative ways of paying for the affected services. It comes after the council had to make cuts in areas such as drug and alcohol services after the NHS withdrew £15 million last year.

How your blood may predict your future health | Inequality | The Guardian
october 2017 by asterisk2a
New research into bloodstream ‘biomarkers’ aims to unlock the full impact of social status on people’s lifetime health outcomes. The key is exposure to stress - quantitated self. making decisions on your own when presented w data? in case of the weight scale, never worked. why will it now? its just more medicalisation - door open for big pharma so people pop pills. vs inconvenience of changing diet lifestyle and learning something new like cooking and meditation. // &! Deprivation and Poverty Stress: The analysis suggested people in lower socioeconomic groups have a demonstrably longer exposure to chronic inflammation – with all its knock-on impacts on long-term health – even once the team corrected for the “usual suspects” of health inequality, including diet and smoking. NHS Health Check: Short GP consultations crazy, say GPs - BBC News
february 2017 by asterisk2a
Average consultation length is 10 minutes in the UK - thought to be the shortest in the developed world.
GP leaders said this was already too short and the extra workload from the hospital closures proposed by local leaders would destabilise care.
The proposals are being made by local health leaders to "modernise" the NHS.
There are 44 plans in England - many of which involve reducing hospital care and pushing more services into the community to save money and make the NHS more efficient. Similar measures are being taken in the rest of the UK. NHS financial problems endemic and no longer sustainable, say auditors | Society | The Guardian
november 2016 by asterisk2a
Auditors were particular alarmed by the decision to transfer £950m from the NHS’s budget for buildings and IT to pay staff’s wages. [...] Meg Hillier, the chair of the public accounts committee, said the Department of Health was making “pie in the sky assumptions” about closing that gap. [...] The bodies estimate that trusts and CCGs can make a further £14.9bn of savings by “moderating the growth in demand for healthcare services” and by making 2% productivity and efficiency improvements. NHS £8bn budget plan 'not enough', say hospital bosses - BBC News
november 2016 by asterisk2a
Patients in England will see rising waiting times, rationing and cuts in the number of staff unless the NHS gets more money, health bosses say.
A five-year plan to increase the budget by £8bn a year by 2020 was only set out last year, but now hospital bosses have warned that is not enough.
Chris Hopson, of NHS Providers, said the settlement needed to be redrawn.
It comes as the half-year accounts for 2016-17 showed hospitals and other NHS trusts were failing to keep in budget.

How to eat like a Victorian - BBC News
october 2016 by asterisk2a
According to a study published in the Royal Society of Medicine, "How the Mid-Victorians Worked, Ate and Died", the combination of enormous amounts of physical activity (most people did physically demanding jobs which meant they were active for 50 to 60 hours a week) and a diet rich in fruits, whole grains, oily fish and vegetables meant that Victorians suffered less from chronic, degenerative diseases than we do.
Dr Paul Clayton, one of the authors of the study, claims that they were "90% less likely to develop cancer, dementia and coronary artery disease than we are today". It certainly meant that diseases like type-2 diabetes, which plague modern society, were vanishingly rare.

NHS chiefs urge GP surgeries to carry out life-changing cataract operations | Daily Mail Online
august 2016 by asterisk2a
The NHS only has capacity to do 330,000 cataract operations a year but this could be hugely increased if GP surgeries also offered them.
The guidance will be issued to England's 211 Clinical Commissioning Groups, which control local NHS budgets and decide which patients deserve treatment.
The health watchdog NICE is also drawing up guidelines on cataract treatment that are due in 2018.
Around half of over-65s suffer from cataracts to some degree. This occurs when the lens in front of the eye becomes cloudy with age.
But it can be easily treated with a quick operation to replace the affected lens with a plastic implant costing £800 an eye.

Caloric Restriction vs. Plant-Based Diets | NutritionFacts.org
july 2016 by asterisk2a
To do this, the researchers recruited vegans from the St. Louis Vegetarian Society, and went to the Calorie Restriction Society to find folks practicing severe caloric restriction. What did they find?
Only the vegan group got a significant drop in IGF-1. These findings demonstrate that, unlike in rodents, long-term severe caloric restriction in humans does not reduce the level of this cancer-promoting hormone. It’s not how many calories we eat, but the protein intake that may be the key determinant of circulating IGF-1 levels in humans, and so reduced protein intake may become an important component of anti-cancer and anti-aging dietary interventions.

Council tax rises 'fail to stop care cuts'
july 2016 by asterisk2a
[ TAX THE CAUSE! ] Care services are facing cuts this year as rises in council tax have failed to plug the gaps in budgets in England, town hall chiefs are warning.
The government allowed councils to increase council tax by 2% this year to spend on care - and most have done so.
But, according to a survey of all 151 social care directors, there is still a shortfall of nearly £1bn.
The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services said councils had no option but to reduce the services.
Directors in charge of care for older people and adults with disabilities indicated in the annual survey only about half of this shortfall could be met by efficiency savings.

NHS budget control 'will require staff cuts'
july 2016 by asterisk2a
It says the government should be honest about NHS spending plans at a time when patient demand is rising. [...] The NHS leadership is set to unveil plans to get hospitals and other trusts to stick to agreed spending limits. In the last financial year, trusts ran up a collective deficit of £2.4bn - and the aim is to cut that figure significantly. [...] "It is no longer credible to argue that the NHS can continue to meet increasing demand for services, deliver current standards of care and stay within its budget. This is widely understood within the NHS and now needs to be debated with the public. "There are no easy choices, but it would be disastrous to adopt a mindset that fails to acknowledge the serious state of the NHS in England today." //&! bbc.in/29mkr7G - An overspend would be a serious breach of Whitehall protocol and lead to senior officials being hauled over the coals by the National Audit Office.

Six pharmacies across the north-east face closure as part of NHS review - Press and Journal
july 2016 by asterisk2a
[Grampian has to make ?18?millions in savings] Six pharmacies across the north-east could be closed as part of a wide-ranging review by NHS Grampian.
The health board has today launched a consultation its dispensing services at Rhynie, Gardenstown, Udny Station, Skene, Portlethen, and Auchenblae.
Under the current arrangements, patients in these areas visiting their GP can collect prescribed medicines at the practice.
But if the health board decides that any of the communities do not require the service, patients will be forced to get their prescriptions filled elsewhere – which could have a major impact on those living in rural areas.

NHS finance managers warn today that patients are set to experience poorer care, longer waiting times for treatment and greater rationing.
A grim outlook for the NHS’s finances is also likely to see many hospitals fail to make savings that ministers have said are vital and put plans for the service to reform how it operates in serious doubt.

NHS short of front-line staff after bad planning, say MPs
july 2016 by asterisk2a
Bad planning and cost-cutting have left the NHS in England short of vital front-line staff, MPs are warning.
The Public Accounts Committee said the shortfall in doctors, nurses and midwives could even get worse if ministers did not get a "better grip".
The group also warned there had been "no coherent attempt" to work out the staffing needed for a seven-day NHS.

Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
april 2016 by asterisk2a
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
march 2016 by asterisk2a
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.
Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Guido Westerwelle hat den Kampf gegen sein Krebsleiden verloren.
march 2016 by asterisk2a

'Graph of Doom' warning to Highland councillors

deprived areas have low tax base to fund welfare and social care, and w demographic bubble, less income tax receipts. this is a double whammy to fund demand of babyboomers. // In a paper to councillors, officers quote research such as a London borough council's "Graph of Doom" showing the effect of spending cuts on services.
The Highland officials also make reference to political commentators describing a period of "perma-austerity" for local government.

march 2016 by asterisk2a
In their letter to the chancellor, they describe health and social care as "two sides of the same coin".
The letter describes the impact of an underfunded social care system on the NHS, saying patients fit to be discharged are unable to leave hospital because social support is unavailable at home.
This increases the likelihood of infections and falls, they write.

Tumours shrunk 'dramatically' in 11 days - BBC News
march 2016 by asterisk2a
The drugs were lapatinib and trastuzumab, which is more widely known as Herceptin. They both target HER2 - a protein that fuels the growth of some women's breast cancers. Herceptin works on the surface of cancerous cells while lapatinib is able to penetrate inside the cell to disable HER2. The study, which also took place at NHS hospitals in Manchester, gave the treatment to women with tumours measuring between 1 and 3cm. In less than two weeks of treatment, the cancer disappeared entirely in 11% of cases, and in a further 17% they were smaller than 5mm. //&! angiogenesis STUPID! - diet - http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=angiogenesis &! https://www.ted.com/talks/william_li?language=en &! http://blog.ted.com/dr_william_lis/ --- It's too much of a ask by meat eating cancer doctors to ask cancer patients to adhere to a Whole-Food Plant-Based diet w some physical activity. march 2016 by asterisk2a
bit.ly/1WbqMkD - The monthly performance publication also showed the NHS was struggling in other areas: the target to see patients needing routine operations within 18 weeks was missed for the second month in a row. the key cancer target for patients to start their treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral from GP was missed for the 20th time in 21 months. twice as many people waited six weeks or longer for a diagnostic test than should have. ambulances missed their target to respond to the most critical calls in eight minutes - one in three patients waited longer - the eighth month in a row it has not been hit [...] Delays in discharging patients also continue to be a problem. Exercise 'not key to obesity fight', say scientists - BBC News

[ Food Politics of "a balanced diet and everything in moderation ] Exercise does little to tackle obesity, according to a group of doctors and sports scientists.
