Adele's 25 has sold more than two million copies in the UK since it was released on 20 November. "I know that streaming music is the future, but it's not the only way to consume music," she said. Umfang und Art des Angebots dürften der Konkurrenz das Leben schwer machen. [...] Apple muss damit nicht reich werden Allerdings sind die Ausgangspunkte sehr unterschiedlich. Bei einem Umsatz von 1,3 Milliarden Dollar machte Spotify im vergangenen Jahr 197 Millionen Euro Verlust. Mit dem Geldverdienen klappt es also nicht einmal beim Marktführer so richtig. Und trotzdem wird das schwedische Unternehmen mit acht Milliarden Dollar bewertet. Für Apple aber ist es viel einfacher: Der kalifornische Konzern muss mit seinem Angebot gar kein Geld verdienen. Der iTunes Store und der App Store dienen in erster Linie dazu, Kunden an Apples Plattformen zu binden und damit den Verkauf der viel profitableren Apple-Hardware anzukurbeln. Genauso ist es auch mit Apple Music.

No wonder streaming platforms can barely make a profit — if at all — while most artists have been forced to view streaming not as a legitimate revenue source but merely a form of exposure. That’s why Apple’s refusal to offer a free option makes perfect sense. But will users agree to pay, especially with free options on the table? Possibly not. And if they don’t it will be because of the greed of record labels, not Apple. [...] labels rejected Apple’s $5 price-point. So the company offered a compromise: $7.99 a month. But the labels still claimed that’s still too low. And so now Apple is back to offering $9.99 a month — the same amount Spotify charges and the same amount 75 percent of its users refuse to pay and will continue to refuse to pay as long as the company stays in business. So now Apple is rightly worried that listeners won’t choose its service over a free one, even if it can offer a deeper catalog with more exclusive content.

Apple reportedly plays dirty to kill Spotify’s free tier — and I hope it gets away with it | PandoDaily
[ Apple's Might. History Rhymes. ] There’s a report out that Apple is pushing music labels to “force” Spotify to abandon its free, ad-supported tier. As Apple prepares to gather the ashes of Beats Music and relaunch its own streaming music service — which sources say will likely to be paid-only — this gambit would decimate Spotify’s user base from 60 million total users to only 15 million paid users. Moreover, sources told the outlet that if Universal Music Group removed its catalog from YouTube, Apple would pay the licensing fee the label conglomerate receives from that platform. (YouTube also has a streaming service in the offing). Considering Apple’s ability to preload apps onto new versions of iOS — not to the mention the fact that it already has 800 million credit cards on file and so only needs to convince a tiny portion of them to sign up in order to beat Spotify — the move would be an effective knockout punch for Apple in America’s streaming music fight.

Apple poaches BBC staffers - Apple has hired four producers from BBC Radio 1 to work for its upcoming music-streaming service, according to Music Business Worldwide. But the reason most artists are not compensated properly for their work has been the same since the advent of recorded music: Record labels. According to a report from the audit firm Ernst & Young, record labels net 45.6 percent of the revenue created by streaming music. The supposedly evil, greedy platform itself — which in this particular study was limited to Spotify and Deezer — only takes home 20.8 percent. After 16.7 percent is taken out for taxes, that leaves 10 percent for songwriters and publishers, and 6.8 percent for artists. And even if Tidal makes users pay (upwards of $20 for the highest sound quality!) artists will still have the same shitty record deals and see the same shitty ratios they’ve had for decades. [ Platform - everyone (middlemen, plural) is taking a cut. ] A new report from audit firm Ernst & Young and the French record label trade group SNEP reveals better estimates than we’ve ever seen on the payout distribution of music streaming services. And who do you suppose takes the biggest cut? You guessed it, labels. According to the report, labels net 45.6 percent of the streaming revenue created by Spotify and Deezer, the two platforms included in the study. The streaming platforms themselves — most of which have yet to achieve profitability despite fielding frequent attacks for their supposed greed — take home 20.8 percent. An additional 16.7 percent is paid in taxes before songwriters and performing artists finally see their shares — which amount to 10 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively.
