Pando: It’s Jack Dorsey’s ego, not Moments, that will sink or save Twitter
And Tuesday’s launch of Moments also gave us a hint at how the story is going to develop next. The launch was timed to make Dorsey appear the fast moving architect of a product that had actually been in development for nearly a year. Dorsey was to get the credit for Moments, for good or ill. And it worked. Publication after publication hailed Dorsey as fast moving, and positioned Moments as “his” bet on transforming the company. As if we’re all to believe the entire thing was imagined and coded within 24 hours of Dorsey arriving at his new desk. All of the above can be summed up in one word: Ego...

What to Make of Amazon's Work Practices? | Bothsides of the Table
It’s best encapsulated in a famous Jeff Bezos quote, “You can work long, hard or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three,” [...] Try working at Goldman Sachs, [...] You think it’s different at any of the top consulting firms? [...] You see organizations like these thrive on large pools of some of the country’s best and brightest graduates that trade off 2-5 years of work experience under extreme pressure in exchange for skills, experiences & relationships that will last a lifetime. [Accelerated Learning] [...] Think its a cake walk working @ any of the countries top law firms? [...] Should we do an article on what it’s like to be a medical resident? How abt working in the US military? Chief of Staff for a major political figure? What abt a top athlete in the NFL or NBA or even part of the coaching staff. Think they dont have work/life balance challenges in a field theyve chosen to work in? [#Top 100 of X vs avg white- or blue-collar worker ] [what u optimize for?]

Pando: #AdamBainIsSoFucked
[ Ego's and no (over) communication what Twitter is, wants to be and can't be. It can't be Facebook or anything else. Twitter can only be Twitter (plus Vine + Persicope + X (say date, business tools) + ads). And no (over) communication how they are going to satisfy Wall Street (profit). No 1-2 year plan. Dick was and is Ops Guy. No obsessive passionate visionary putting it all on the line about the product and its potential yada yada yada that gets listeners hooked and thus can ask for patience, ask for time. Dick was hired to fix the chaos and mess. Get it to IPO. He did that ... ]

Reddit's fate hangs in the balance as revolt against CEO makes waves | Technology | The Guardian
While more than 200,000 Redditors want Ellen Pao to resign, readers are jumping ship to budding competitor sites as top brass pushes to go mainstream [...] Redditors – as users are called – have accused the site of increasingly trying to monetize its popularity, and it appears their sentiments came to a head last Thursday, when Reddit’s popular director of talent, Victoria Taylor, was let go from her post. [...] a company torn between catering to commercial interests, and an obsession with giving voice to every possible perspective. [...] But some have suggested that the latest revolt is a flashpoint in a wider clash of cultures. The web’s largest agglomeration of niche enthusiasts provides a portal for people to make friends and enemies in a wide range of different communities, including some less reputable forums that have come under increasing scrutiny. &! bit.ly/1NMqxYG - Memo to VCs: Not every site with gargantuan traffic is destined to be a billion dollar public company

Dick Costolo Dances Around The Question Of Who Will Lead Twitter Next | TechCrunch
“The thing that’s important as CEO, is to put the right system together,” he said. “You develop a cohesive hole and you work backwards.” “There’s this comic book notion of what [a good CEO is] like,” he said. “The reality is you have to be yourself, there are many ways to be successful. great leaders are both resilient and courageous, particularly in the face of external, ‘why are you doing this, why are you doing that,’ and they’re self-aware.”

The just maybe unsinkable Dick Costolo | PandoDaily
Costolo worked to stabilize an unsteady management team and outline a plan to address the main concerns: sluggish user growth and wringing new revenue out of its service. At the company’s analyst day in November, Costolo outlined several plans to boost user growth, engagement and revenue: make sponsored tweets 5 percent of user feeds, up from 1.3%; give new users an instant timeline to simplify the work needed to make Twitter useful; use Fabric and other initiatives to make Twitter an indispensable platform.

BBC News - Twitter boss admits firm is failing victims of trolling
The debate over so-called internet trolls - people who use social media accounts to abuse others - has been attracting headlines for several years now. The daughter of actor Robin Williams signed off Twitter following taunts about her father's suicide. Screenwriter Jane Goldman deleted her account following abuse of her family. And Sara Payne, whose daughter Sarah was abducted and murdered in 2000, said she was leaving the social media network after years of online harassment.

A fireside chat with Fred Wilson - YouTube
"We are in the service business, helping them being successful." VC guys - here to help you; council, scale, connect/network help, help where they can be helpful otherwise find the person who can help you with X (ie Chris Sacca seems to have special skill set that some companies can leverage for biz deals and negotiations - ie Uber [ http://youtu.be/iqUG2_cmZ6I ]). See a16z model; Operations Helpers (HR, Marketing, biz Dev.). That is where Angel Investors (single persons) and Seed Rounds lack value; the added value and the scalability (n+1 people behind VC company). In Finance School; the present value of the company is the future cash-flow (not necessarily profits), that is why companies who aimed for revenue growth are much more valuable than companies who aimed for margin. Term 'Investing in the future.' ;-) The future is uncertain by definition. Very uncertain. High risk, high potential returns. With given losers (losses non-leveraged, can't loose more than you've invested).

ideas on paper are nothing. test them out. if it has traction - got to go all in. wear it as badge of honour, if your idea, that you put from paper into the real world, fails. its part of your body of work. it's nothing personal. (mismanagement) and it's unsexy non-hip non-attractive brand, and uninspiring front-page). ... Further in: Focus has to be on product, to reach scale. Product centric CEO's (Larry Page, Dick Costolo, Zuckerberg) don't put a big banner ad on the front-page of their product. it ruins the user experience and adds no value. it subtracts value. where is the value proposition of that? + http://youtu.be/HtRfHASjtcA

Costolo’s plan to make Twitter all about entertainment makes perfect sense | PandoDaily
"There are huge dollars in entertainment– more than in news and certainly more than in what your friend had for lunch. Twitter is the only force on earth that argues against time shifting. Sure you can TiVo the Oscars. But you better not open Twitter for two hours if you do. And lastly, with “just” 300 million users or so Twitter desparately needs to go mainstream. Like it or not, this is a generation of consumer Web companies graded on the Facebook and LinkedIn curves. You gotta either have the size of the former or the monetization of the latter. The lowest common denominator on global culture are movies, music, TV, and sports. As his friend Ryan Seacrest can attest, more people vote for American Idol hopefuls than elected officials." || Twitter is now a live stream of what is happening. The shortest & most accessible form to NOW. Not more. Not less. Your hourly quick fix. Part of the home screen. Next to Snapchat & WhatsApp & FB ... + http://bit.ly/1rkVyMh + http://bit.ly/1g1LJeO
