In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

The poet WHAuden is credited with first coining the word “topophilia” to describe a strong emotional pull to a special place.

Now scientific research, using cutting-edge brain imaging, suggests Auden was on to something. Falling unemployment is great for the economy? Try telling cleaners like Irene | Stefan Baskerville | Opinion | The Guardian
While UK unemployment fell by 75,000 in the three months to July, bringing the jobless rate down to 4.3%, these figures disguise a disturbing trend in the British labour market – one of falling wages, rising insecurity and false self-employment. At the New Economics Foundation, we carried out research that shows two in every five people employed in the UK are in “bad jobs” – work that doesn’t provide a secure, living wage.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Neoliberalism has taken this internalized self-blame and turbocharged it. Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

First fall in consumer spending for almost 4 years
Consumer spending has fallen on an annual basis for the first time in almost four years [...] Adjusting for inflation, real consumer spending by British consumers on Visa debit, credit and prepaid cards in May was 0.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year. Visa said that seasonally adjusted spending was 1.8 per cent lower in May compared to April. The figures are unofficial, but suggest that sluggish economic growth continued in the second quarter, after a first quarter in which the UK grew at the slowest rate in the G7. Car finance deals soar to new record - BBC News
The Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have raised concerns about such deals.
The Bank's worry is in relation to levels of consumer borrowing.
However Adrian Dally, head of motor finance at the FLA, said lenders were behaving responsibly.
"We do not share their concerns," he told the BBC. "Lending is responsible. This is a sustainable model going forwards." [...] That is largely because motorists can hand their cars back if they can no longer afford payments.
Ultimately it is the car manufacturers who carry the risk on such deals, as they guarantee second-hand values.

The ten graphs which show how Britain became a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of London (and what we can do about it) – New thinking for the British economy
[ uk banks overinvested enabled by political policy into houses and high streets. underinvested in productive capital like R&D companies in general etc ] >> But it doesn’t increase the productive capacity of the economy one iota: a more expensive house doesn’t produce more intelligent children, and a higher share price doesn’t boost a company’s productivity (though it can indirectly boost its capacity to raise funds for investment). Further evidence that consumers are becoming more cautious was provided by the the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which released figures on Monday showing a drop of more than 4% in private car sales last month.

Budget 2017: Hammond to tell us the Brexit vote could have been worse | Business | The Guardian
consumers carried on spending and businesses continued to expand.

The picture for the public finances is also looking rosier compared with Hammond’s maiden autumn statement in November. [...] But here’s what the chancellor will not tell you: living costs have gone up and will continue to do so. The poorest will be hit hardest as the cost of essentials such as food and heating take a growing chunk out of already tight family budgets. Wages will struggle to match rises in inflation and the government’s benefit cuts mean that incomes will fall for the poorest people in Britain. In short, unless the government does something significant to improve living standards this week, inequality will start rising again.

IFS: Growth in UK living standards worst in 60 years | Business | The Guardian
The Institute for Financial Studies is predicting that households will be almost 20% worse off by 2021 - IFS calculations show that average household incomes will be 18% lower in 2021-22 than could have been reasonably expected before the financial crisis in 2007-08 - “One of the biggest drivers of the rise in child poverty is policy choices, which is why it is essential that the prime minister and chancellor use the upcoming budget to put in place measures to stop this happening. An excellent start would be to ensure families can keep more of their earnings under the universal credit.”

The Bank of England is in denial. Brexit shows people don't act rationally | Robert Skidelsky | Business | The Guardian
Our models of quantifiable risk fail when faced with radical uncertainty. // retail spending binge post brexit and in run-up. // The challenge is to develop macroeconomic models that can work in stormy conditions: models that incorporate radical uncertainty and therefore a high degree of unpredictability in human behaviour. [...] Keynes, for his part, didn’t think this way at all. He wanted an economics that would give full scope for judgment, enriched not only by mathematics and statistics, but also by ethics, philosophy, politics, and history – subjects dropped from contemporary economists’ training, leaving a mathematical and computational skeleton. To offer meaningful descriptions of the world, economists, he often said, must be well educated.

Universities minister announces sale of student loan book | Education | The Guardian
[ corporatists/banks will neg lower price than actual/current value. Bc (1) inflation (2) no-repayments/delayed repayment/default (3) lower repayment rates in future than expected bc of econ. et al. Tories selling gov assets at firesale prices because of its fetish w the deficit caused by the bank bailout. ] But Hillman raised concerns about whether the sale would result in taxpayers getting value for money, saying: “We saw in Gordon Brown’s sale of the government’s gold and also in Vince Cable’s sale of Royal Mail how hard that is to achieve and how controversial it can be if the price paid comes to seem too low.

“Ministers will say the underlying legislation only allows sales that are good value for money, but it takes time to know if that has happened in practice.”

UK faces return to inequality of Thatcher years, says report | Business | The Guardian
Pressure on the government to help struggling Britons has intensified after a leading thinktank warned that falling living standards for the poor threatened the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.

The Resolution Foundation said Theresa May would need to make good on her pledge to support “just about managing” households as it released a report showing that rising inflation and an end to recent strong jobs growth would hit the least well-off hardest.

UK inflation: now it's the pound in your pocket being devalued | Business | The Guardian
According to the National Institute for Economic & Social Research inflation is heading towards 4% as the effect of Brexit uncertainty keeps the pound low and imports expensive. [...] The government has pledged to double down on austerity from April, with cuts to tax credits and other benefits as well as the savings made over the last five years.

Such a sharp spike in prices will strain household finances, especially when wages growth is expected to remain at around 2.5%.

Bank of England policymaker Michael Saunders said last week that developments in the labour market such as zero-hour contracts and agency working meant wages were unlikely to take off any time soon. [...] [ rise in unsecured credit 2008 levels, and personal bankruptcies not easier (online) to do and 2016 personal bankruptcies were up ~16% ]

Robert Skidelsky: 'Why don't more people aspire to living a good life?' | From the Observer | The Guardian
What went wrong?

The Thatcher years created a great regression in that belief, I think. We were getting there and then it was reversed. Though it was wicked and unrealisable, the failure of communism had a profound effect. There suddenly seemed no alternative to money as a way of organising society.
