Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

Chancellor urged not to cut vital health fund - BBC News
George "Mr Judgement Call" Osborne // Vital health services in England including stop smoking, obesity and sexual health clinics are at risk, experts are warning. Earlier this year the Chancellor unveiled plans to cut the £2.8bn public health budget by £200m from January. The pot is held by councils so is not covered by the government's promise to protect the health service. But doctors, nurses and other senior health officials say the money is vital to relieving pressure on the wider NHS. A total of 11 groups, including the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Royal College of Nursing, NHS Confederation and Faculty of Public Health, have put their names to a letter to George Osborne asking him to reconsider the plans. The letter warned raiding the funds would simply cause greater ill-health and inequality in the population. [...] [PREVENTION>>] [deal with Osborne for 8bn extra a year this Parliament] included making gains from improvements in people's health. [Cut now, pay more later!]

Audit Scotland says NHS needs 'fundamental change' - BBC News
[ REPORT DOES NOT MENTION PREVENTION AS MEASURE! ] Fundamental change is needed now if the NHS in Scotland is to cope with demand, according to the financial watchdog Audit Scotland. [...] The report also says that the health budget as a whole has decreased slightly since 2008/9 by 0.7% once inflation and capital spending is taken into account. Health boards - which are responsible for most frontline services - received a slight increase of 1%, but not enough to keep pace with cost pressures. The cost of drugs alone rose by 4% and is expected to rise by 5-16% in future. [...] Dr Peter Bennie, chairman of the British Medical Association Scotland, said: "The overriding message that must get through from this report is that substantive and realistic action is needed if our health service is to cope with the rapidly increasing pressures it is facing. //&! bbc.in/1PGQddr - the NHS adapting to changed demands. highlights areas where not much progress has been made towards the vision.

Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
Everything in Moderation? Even Heart Disease? | NutritionFacts.org
Health authorities appear to have taken the patronizing view that the public can’t handle the truth and would rather the science be watered down. It’s worth rewatching and pausing on the Framingham data, the graph with the bell curves. That’s a very important concept to understand. At first glance, it looks like those that get heart disease and those that don’t have very similar cholesterol levels, but that’s only at “normal” levels. To get an Optimal Cholesterol Level, one has to eat an exceedingly healthy diet. It’s worth it, though, since we’re not just talking life and death with heart disease, but life and the #1 cause of death. And I continue this streak of questioning the patronizing paternalism of authorities in the next video, Optimal Diet: Just Give it To Me Straight, Doc. - bit.ly/1RhH5cG - Why is there a reticence to provide the public with guidelines that will spare them from preventable disease and premature death?

More patients in Scotland given antidepressants - BBC News
814,181 patients in 2014/15. Since 2009/10, use of antidepressants has increased by 28.5%. Two-thirds of the patients given the drugs were women, with use peaking in the 50-54 age group. The figures indicated antidepressant use was associated with deprivation. They recorded 225,969 patients in the poorest parts of Scotland receiving the drugs, compared with 110,507 in the least deprived areas. The total cost of antidepressants to the NHS in Scotland was £40.8m. The use of lower-cost drugs means this figure has fallen by one-third over the past 10 years. [...] "We are now looking at the flabbergasting statistic of more than one in seven people in Scotland being prescribed antidepressants this year. More maternity units closing doors, union warns - BBC News
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said a shortage of midwives was having a major impact and mistakes would "almost certainly be made". Some 42% of units shut down temporarily in the past year, its survey found. The government said it was determined to ensure "every mother and baby gets the highest quality care". A poll of 83 heads of midwifery at NHS trusts found there had been a rise in the number of units that had closed their doors, with 33% having closed the previous year. The RCM said budget cuts were also affecting services, with midwives struggling to cope with a rising birth rate and increasingly complex births. [...] But he added that rising numbers of complex pregnancies were also putting pressure on other UK countries. [...] The RCM says there is a shortage of 2,600 full-time midwives.

Cancer virus discovery helped by delayed flight - BBC News
Epstein Barr virus // Wikipedia - It is best known as the cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). It is also associated with particular forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, gastric cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and conditions associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), such as hairy leukoplakia and central nervous system lymphomas. There is evidence that infection with EBV is associated with a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, especially dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Some 200,000 cancer cases per year are thought to be attributable to EBV. //&! http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=chicken //&! Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease - YouTube
>> medical profession may come around: what is bad for your arteries and heart is bad for your brain as new research shows. cholesterol levels do play role/correlate with "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy"/beta-amyloid formation in the brain aka brain plaques. After all, its a build up of the arteries in our brain (brain consists mostly of fat) "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a neurological condition in which proteins called amyloid build up on the walls of the arteries in the brain. The condition increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and dementia." - 1.usa.gov/1MlBi6u // And prevention is better than cure because cognitive function starts to be lost early on before medical/personal detection of the condition. // LDL cholestero may be able to cross blood brain barrier. Chemistry Nobel: Lindahl, Modrich and Sancar win for DNA repair - BBC News
Their work uncovered the mechanisms used by cells to repair damaged DNA - a fundamental process in living cells and important in cancer. [...] DNA is open to an onslaught of different phenomena that can generate defects in our genomes. UV radiation and molecules known as free radicals can cause damage. Furthermore, defects can arise when DNA is copied during cell division - a process that occurs millions of times each day in our bodies. "Cigarette smoke contains small reactive chemicals, which bind to the DNA and prevent it from being replicated properly - so they are mutagens. And once there is damage in the DNA this can cause diseases including cancer," said Prof Lindahl.

WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

The NHS is on a one-way road to privatisation | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
[ 'founder' of NHS said NHS exists as long as people fight for it. true north ] [ rationing and creating Cinderella service ] The British public has not agreed to the destruction of the health service. It’s up to all of us to fight for it. [...] This translates into unlimited rationing. We are already seeing the rationing of hearing aids and cataracts. Devon CCG announced that all routine surgery would be restricted for obese patients and smokers. And routine shoulder surgery would be restricted for all patients. [...] Simon Stevens’ Five Year Forward View asked the government for an extra £8bn each year but the flip side of this is a further £22bn in efficiency savings. Never has the NHS undergone such a funding squeeze since its inception. Yet we spend significantly less on the NHS than the EU average and well below the likes of France, Germany and the Netherlands. Out of the G7, only Italy has the same level of spending.

NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

Age of menopause 'controllers' found - BBC News
Damage corrected. Comparing the DNA of nearly 70,000 women allowed the researchers to identify the differences between those starting the menopause early and late. The team at Exeter and Cambridge universities showed that at least two repair mechanisms were involved. Cheese cake/glaze donut is half fat half sugar. & dont forget the Salt. Processed Food is literally deadly because it IS engineered 2 addiction (Wall Street Food Conglomerate profit maximisation/shareholder value) combination of 50/50 + high in salt = moorish. Tricking our stop buttons (Leptin and Ghrelin, satiety feeling (via condensed volume (no/little added fiber) to calories ratio)) that we have // Thus have to make the effort & planning, making your meals yourself. // Also Dr. Robert Lustig, boo&talks: processed food as culprit. //&! youtu.be/_H5oFX7bHtY + exercise & animal protein culprit too! //&! youtu.be/2uisu5dY3G0

Jeff Novick, RD, MS - Foods That Make You Thin - YouTube
- how can you fix something that people think is normal. that they are normal? you have to enlighten them, not shove it in their face, but they have to do the work themselves. then comes the intrinsic motivation with that and the step by step, incremental change ... that eventually compounds. change is hard. but hard things are worth it. rewarding so much more. its a individual private personal journey. //&! Genetic clue to breast cancer relapses - BBC News
A research team from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge found that cancers that return were more likely to contain certain genes or combinations of genes. Targeting these genes with early treatments could be key, they said. The study is being presented at the European Cancer Congress in Vienna. In around one in five people with breast cancer, the disease will return - either to the same place as the original tumour or another part of the body.
