NHS could 'pop' without emergency cash boost, health bosses told | Society | The Guardian
The Treasury wants the NHS to show that it is “straining every sinew” before it receives any budget boost. He added: “I hope it [extra money] comes in this budget but at some point it needs to come. If it’s not this budget, it needs to be a budget in the future, hopefully before things pop.” The exact scope of what care the NHS can be expected to provide would need to be “reset” and some forms of care “deprioritised” unless its budget goes up beyond the small increases ministers have already planned, Mackey said

How the humble potato fuelled the rise of liberal capitalism
Enlightened eating

Today’s somewhat uneasy marriage of public health and individual choice is the result of new ideas that emerged during the Enlightenment. During the 18th century, states across Europe began to rethink the bases of national wealth and strength. At the heart of these new ideas was a new appreciation of what we would now call public health. Whereas in earlier centuries rulers wished to prevent famines that might cause public unrest, in the 18th century, politicians became increasingly convinced that national strength and economic prowess required more than an obedient population disinclined to riot.

Osborne’s huge tax giveaway starts for rich – as the poor are hit | Politics | The Guardian
The richest will reap 80% of the rewards from the tax and benefit changes that start to come into effect this week, while the poorest will become worse off, according to detailed analysis by the Resolution Foundation.

The independent thinktank’s research shows that the effect of £2bn of income tax cuts and more than £1bn of welfare cuts will add up to a huge transfer of wealth from low- and middle-income households to richer ones.

NHS bosses 'spent half of extra Autumn Statement cash on outside services' - BBC News
[ outsourcing routine ops to private providers ie hips, bariatric, cancer, ] The Health Foundation report also found that £1 in every £8 of local commissioner's budgets in England is spent on care provided by non-NHS organisations.
Anita Charlesworth, director of research and economics at the Health Foundation, said: "Rising demand for emergency care meant that NHS providers haven't had the capacity to deliver planned care and patients had to be diverted outside the NHS.
"NHS hospitals were left squeezed by sharply rising drug and staff costs with little additional funding.
"The result was big deficits that had to be covered by raids on investment budgets."

Doctors warn ‘struggling’ NHS could be forced to cut back treatment - The Scotsman

Doctors excited by cystic fibrosis therapy - BBC News
Data presented at the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference shows that a drugs combination - which enables production of runnier mucus - slows the irreversible decline in lung function. [...] The drug combination is clearly not a cure, but the researchers said the untreated patients would expect their lung function to decline by 2.3% a year, but this fell to 1.3% in those given the therapy.

Collapse in corporation tax receipts pushes public deficit to £10.6bn | Business | The Guardian
Suren Thiru, head of economics at the British Chambers of Commerce, said the rise in government borrowing underscored the weakness of the UK economy.

“The UK’s ability to generate tax revenue has diminished following the financial crisis, and this underlying weakness is likely to be exacerbated further if the UK economy slows as we predict,” he said, adding it was vital the chancellor offered incentives to “invest, create jobs, and support growth”.

NHS head disputes Theresa May claims over health funding | Society | The Guardian
Asked by MPs about May’s belief, which she outlined at the meeting on 8 September, that the NHS could learn from the Home Office and Ministry of Defence’s recent experience of efficiency drives, Stevens dismissed any parallels. While crime had fallen in recent years, demand for NHS care had risen, was still growing and would continue upward, he said. For example, demand for cancer care had risen 55% over the past five years.

Summer 2016 'worse than most winters for A&E' - BBC News
Waiting times in A&E units in England this summer have been worse than every winter for the past 12 years bar one, figures show.
The colder months have traditionally been the most difficult for hospitals. But pressures have grown so much that this summer saw one in 10 patients wait for over four hours in A&E during June, July and August. [...] The data also showed hospitals are missing a number of other key targets for cancer, routine operations and ambulance response times. [...] [ elderly care adult social care at tipping point. not being treated at home end up in A&E eventually and then bed block! ]

Let struggling GP surgeries fail, says NHS England letter - BBC News
A letter from an NHS England official to managers and GPs in one region suggests vulnerable practices could be left to "wither by the system".
The note, seen by the BBC and Pulse magazine, claims NHS England is no longer able to "continue supporting practices irrespective of their ability… to transform appropriately".
NHS England denied this was the case.

How to eat like a Victorian - BBC News
According to a study published in the Royal Society of Medicine, "How the Mid-Victorians Worked, Ate and Died", the combination of enormous amounts of physical activity (most people did physically demanding jobs which meant they were active for 50 to 60 hours a week) and a diet rich in fruits, whole grains, oily fish and vegetables meant that Victorians suffered less from chronic, degenerative diseases than we do.
Dr Paul Clayton, one of the authors of the study, claims that they were "90% less likely to develop cancer, dementia and coronary artery disease than we are today". It certainly meant that diseases like type-2 diabetes, which plague modern society, were vanishingly rare.

Crisis-hit Scots NHS board has "no plan" to deal with £11.6m budget deficit, says auditor (From Herald Scotland)
NHS Tayside has been plunged into a fresh crisis as a report shows it needs to make “unprecedented” savings of £58.4 million following four years of government bailouts.

Auditor General Caroline Gardner signalled the board was facing a £11.6m budget shortfall this year with had no clear plan for how to cope with the funding gap.

It has previously received £24.3 million in state rescue packages since 2012.
Ms Gardner warned there was a “significant risk” the health board will not meet its financial plan in 2016/17 or subsequent years and will require yet another bailout.

SNP government defeated after Holyrood health debate - BBC News
[ ~closing xyz that exists twice within vicinity/within one health trust~ ] - Labour's motion for the NHS debate highlighted proposed changes to services at the Vale of Leven Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Hospital, Monklands Hospital, Lightburn Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the Centre for Integrative Care.
The party argued that the proposals "constitute major changes in service provision" and therefore should be decided on by ministers rather than local health boards. &!

Hospitals in England are on the brink of collapse, warn NHS chiefs | Society | The Guardian
The body that represents hospitals across England has issued a startling warning that the NHS is close to breaking point because of its escalating cash crisis. //&!
The gap between funds and delivery is a chasm in the NHS: something has to give
Waiting lists are at their highest in eight years. In the absence of extra money, we need an open and honest public debate about where the cuts should fall. Years of underfunding have left the service facing such “impossible” demands that without urgent extra investment in November’s autumn statement it will have to cut staff, bring in charges or introduce “draconian rationing” of treatment – all options that will provoke public disquiet, it says. - &

NHS 'in perpetual winter of Narnia' as waiting list reaches record 3.9m | Society | The Guardian
“Relentless demand for services” is a key factor that is “fuelling deteriorating performance” against a whole set of NHS waiting time indicators, it add [...] “The NHS is now struggling to cope all year round. It is a pressure cooker and with bed occupancy at such constantly high levels and community services stretched, there is nowhere for the pressure to escape to. It would now take very little for hospitals to be fully overwhelmed,” said Lara Carmona, the RCN’s associate director of policy, international and parliamentary affairs. - &!
