Racism will not be solved by there being more mixed-race children | Nikesh Shukla | Life and style | The Guardian
“Beige Britain” won’t be the utopia we want. It’ll be the same country it always was, but with a significant demographic change. 'Toxic garbage will be sold here': Outcry as Brazil moves to loosen pesticide laws | World news | The Guardian
“The economic interest will prevail over human and environmental health.”

Of 121 pesticides permitted in Brazil for coffee production, 30 are already banned in the European Union, including the toxic herbicide paraquat, Bombardi reported in an extensive 2017 study. [...] The country already lets foreign companies exploit its lower standards of protection, they said, “exporting hazardous pesticides prohibited from use in their domestic markets to be used in Brazil.”

Under Brazil’s current legislation, pesticides with elements considered teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, endocrine disruptive, or posing risks to the reproductive system can’t be registered, they said. But under the bill, hazardous pesticides will only be prohibited when there is a “scientifically established unacceptable risk” – a definition too vague to be effective.

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Doctor: 'band aid tricks' won’t solve Rio water risk
Dr Daniel Becker, a paediatrician who works in the city's poorest neighbourhoods, says "human sewage", combined with industrial waste, in Guanabara Bay pose a real risk to swimmers, sailors and windsurfers.

He said Brazil's government has used "band aid tricks" to reduce the amount of rubbish, but this is a much bigger problem than that.

If athletes on, or in the water swallow any of it, Dr Becker says the bacteria and viruses contained within could lead to "diarrohea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disease, also Hepatitis A is a risk."

Brazil Zika outbreak: More babies born with birth defects - BBC News
New figures from Brazil show a further rise in the number of babies born with abnormally small heads to mothers infected with the Zika virus. There have been 3,893 cases of microcephaly since October, when the authorities first noticed a surge, up from 3,500 in last week's report. Zika is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue and chikungunya. Brazil is experiencing the largest known outbreak of Zika. The Zika virus has already killed five babies in the country, said the health ministry. Another 44 deaths are being investigated to determine if they were caused by Zika. Last week, the Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Castro said a new testing kit was being developed to identify quickly the presence of either of the three viruses. He also announced extra funds to speed the development of a vaccine for Zika "in record time". //&! bit.ly/1PiggJc //&! bbc.in/1Ku05B6

Olympia in Rio de Janeiro: Segelrevier birgt hohes Infektionsrisiko - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Record oil glut stands at 3bn barrels - BBC News
Although lower oil prices will lead to a decline in US production next year, the IEA said it would take months to clear the glut. "This massive cushion has inflated even as the global oil market adjusts to $50 per barrel. Demand growth has risen to a five-year high of nearly two million barrels per day," the agency said. "Gains in demand have been outpaced by vigorous production from OPEC and resilient non-OPEC supply." Growth in global demand for oil is expected to fall in 2016 as the allure of lower prices fades, the IEA added. //&! bbc.in/1HH3VL1 - So as China goes through what's being called the "new normal", it's likely that commodity producers are going to have to accept the same fate for themselves too.

IMF warns of new financial crisis if interest rates rise | Business | The Guardian
Fund says governments in emerging markets should prepare now for a new credit crunch because of a 10-year corporate borrowing binge [...] “Shocks to the corporate sector could quickly spill over to the financial sector and generate a vicious cycle as banks curtail lending. Decreased loan supply would then lower aggregate demand and collateral values, further reducing access to finance and thereby economic activity, and in turn, increasing losses to the financial sector,” the IMF warns. [...] “Emerging markets must prepare for the adverse domestic stability implications of global financial tightening,” the IMF says.

Fed chief Yellen says US rate rise still likely this year - BBC News
The US remains "on track" for an interest rate rise this year, Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen has said. The central bank head said as long as inflation was stable and the US economy was strong enough to boost jobs, the conditions would be right for a rise. Despite expectations of a rise this month, the Fed held rates, in part due to fears about global economic growth. Ms Yellen, speaking at the University of Massachusetts, said US economic prospects "generally appear solid". Speaking a week after the Fed delayed that long-anticipated hike, she said she and other policymakers did not expect recent global economic and financial market developments to significantly affect the central bank's policy. Much recent inflationary weakness is due to special and likely temporary factors, such as a strong dollar and low oil prices, she said. //&! http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-09-25/janet-yellen-s-flip-flop-confuses-markets

Brazil faces its deepest recession in 25 years, policy drift and now a reputation deficit that threaten to undo years of prosperity and social gains. [...] even years on, with the economy set to shrink by two percent this year, and unemployment and consumer debt spiking, Brazil looks more likely cast as the leader of submerging markets and the sick man of the BRICS, the club of outsize developing nations -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- once touted to lead world growth.

China devalues yuan currency to three-year low - BBC News
bbc.in/1WfUOFp // The weakening of the currency will also put the US Fed on the spot. In effect China is exporting deflation to the US - and so some will argue that the Fed should find an elegant way to back away from its recent signalling that September will see the first rise in interest rates since the Crash of 2008. Or to put it another way, in terms of US manufacturers and exporters, Beijing has done the monetary tightening that arguably the US economy needs. // &! tcrn.ch/1Tnj89s Apple shares reaction -5%, higher import costs. // &! bbc.in/1TrsssP - rattles the markets.

Netherlands to Continue In World Cup Despite Doping Scandal - National Report | National Report
On Saturday and Sunday, FIFA officials administered random drug tests to all of the participants in the 2014 World Cup, and during those tests, it was revealed that six players from the Netherlands and one player from Belgium have tested positive. “These seven players, whom we will not identify, have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.  It is a shame, a real shame,” says Dr. Giorgio Bertolucci, the FIFA official in charge of drug testing. “We have privately issued fines to each of the players, and will monitor them closely to ensure they do not cheat in the future.  The clubs have also been fined, and three fitness staff, two from Netherlands and one from Belgium, have been expelled from these games.”

BBC Sport - World Cup 2014: Brazil cracked up, says Germany's Joachim Low
w/o Thiago Silva, Luiz was incapable 2 pickup Leadership role, commanding, directing, organising the game. It wasnt just Neymar missing. It was a team w/o leadership. Youve got 11 world players on both sides. But a team w/o a leader, vision, direction, playbook is a incomplete team. A house of cards that was the Brazilian Team, (many around 1-2 key players - philosophy) fell apart. http://bbc.in/1mHpAHB + http://bbc.in/U39yeN "Scolari bounded off the team coach wearing a white "Forca Neymar" baseball cap while captain David Luiz and goalkeeper Julio Cesar held up his number 10 shirt during the national anthem. Fine sentiments perhaps, but also a sign of overwrought emotions, of the pressure of playing without their superstar and the doubts that exposed. The constant hugging and team bonding smacked more of insecurity and posturing. Germany in contrast were cold, clinical, magnificent." http://bbc.in/1znN7l3 http://bit.ly/1oix4ML + "the trophy doesnt say great team, it says 'winners.'"

Brazilian president Rousseff: US surveillance a 'breach of international law' | World news | theguardian.com
Brazil's president, Dilma Rousseff, has launched a blistering attack on US espionage at the UN general assembly, accusing the NSA of violating international law by its indiscriminate collection of personal information of Brazilian citizens and economic espionage targeted on the country's strategic industries. Rousseff's angry speech was a direct challenge to President Barack Obama, who was waiting in the wings to deliver his own address to the UN general assembly, and represented the most serious diplomatic fallout to date from the revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
