Comment: Writer Darren McGarvey on why independence isn't enough for Scotland's poorest communities. [...] Comment: Writer Darren McGarvey on why independence isn't enough for Scotland's poorest communities. This was no home at all. This was an open-plan torture chamber where deprivation, in the truest sense of the word, was the absolute default position. A home where poverty had not only corrupted people, but left them grotesquely deformed. [...] There is no pragmatism where inequality is concerned. There is only action and inaction. If you can't make an argument for slightly higher taxes to a class of educated people who are fortunate enough to be doing well in a terminally unequal society then I already know what is required of me as a citizen. [...] She died because she happened to be born into poverty. And we grieved for her death while growing up poor. Now her ghost follows all of us wherever we go.

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

Prisons overhaul to be announced by David Cameron - BBC News
He will say the "failure" of the current system, with its high reoffending rates and levels of violence, is "scandalous". He is expected to announce prison governors will be given more say over how jails spend their money. [ BUT NOT MORE MONEY AS A WHOLE TO PREVENT, INTERVENE, REINTEGRATE and this was not in the Manifesto ] [...] "Not everyone shows remorse and not everyone seeks redemption. "But I also strongly believe that we must offer chances to change; that for those trying hard to turn themselves around, we should offer hope; that in a compassionate country, we should help those who've made mistakes to find their way back onto the right path." [...] "Prisons are currently violent and overcrowded. As such, they fail everyone: victims, the public, staff and prisoners themselves. [...] outgoing chief inspector of prisons in England and Wales said prisons were "as bad as you could possibly imagine". [...] conditions in adult prisons had deteriorated over the past five years.

BBC One - Panorama, Tough Justice in Britain - Texas Style
As the UK's imprisonment rate remains the highest in western Europe, Panorama joins Michael Gove - the man in charge of British prisons - on a fact-finding mission in Texas. 'Hang 'em high' Texas is not the first place you might look for lessons in criminal justice - they execute more people and lock up more offenders than anywhere else in America. But now this conservative state is the unlikely centre of a rehabilitation-led revolution in prison reform that's sweeping through the US. Crime is down, prisoner numbers have fallen and, on top of this, they have cut costs. Are there valuable lessons to be learned here, and are UK politicians really ready to dole out some Texan justice?

Babies, Brains, Nature and Nurture -- An Interview with Dr Stuart Shanker - Freedomain Radio - YouTube
implications for education of child and adolescent when certain things like self-regulation, deferred gratification, attention span, empathy, sympathy, relating, moral reasoning, avoidance of social interaction (can cause deficits in language and non-verbal interaction), etc etc are not properly developed during early life 0-8yrs old - thus - MANDATORY! kindergarten to be able to observe with qualified personnel and in case to be able to intervene (mitigate downstream effects) and to help the child and the parents. // 35min - adolescent offenders and repeat re-offending (and pre that, addiction and other things are symptoms). mentioned 3 books. // 47:44 - fixed mindset vs. growth mindset = praise for being intelligent (bad parenting) vs praise for doing/did good task X (good parenting). // there is no such thing as a lazy kid, stupid kid or bad kid

BBC News - New law on sale of sex 'could cut human trafficking'
[ making new law criminalising also joe is another top down approach. will not help!!! change has to happen bottom up supported by policy makers. ] [...] The move has been supported by Anne McIlveen, co-ordinator of the Salt and Light charity in Glasgow which provides food, clothing and support and prayer to the women on the streets of the city. She said the current law, which criminalises the sale of sex, but does not address those who purchase it, fails to help women to exit prostitution. "A lot of these girls are in it because they've got addictions, they're living in poverty and it's the only way they can see to feed habits or to get drink or to pay the electric bill."

Russell Brand: Philip Seymour Hoffman is another victim of extremely stupid drug laws | Comment is free | The Guardian
Addiction is a mental illness around which there is a great deal of confusion, which is hugely exacerbated by the laws that criminalise drug addicts. If drugs are illegal people who use drugs are criminals. We have set our moral compass on this erroneous premise, and we have strayed so far off course that the landscape we now inhabit provides us with no solutions and greatly increases the problem. [...] Countries like Portugal and Switzerland that have introduced progressive and tolerant drug laws have seen crime plummet and drug-related deaths significantly reduced.

Book Excerpt: Understanding the New Jim Crow | BillMoyers.com
The following is an excerpt from Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. - "Today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African-Americans. Once you’re labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination— employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits and exclusion from jury service — are suddenly legal. ...We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." - Michelle Alexander
