I always suspected BAME NHS workers were treated differently. Now I know it’s true | Saleyha Ahsan | Opinion | The Guardian
The GMC commissioned an independent report to look into the reasons why doctors from ethnic minorities are twice as likely to face disciplinary action as white doctors. Among its findings is that BAME medical professionals are often treated as outsiders by their NHS seniors and peers, and not given the support they need. But I think it goes further than that.

'My career as a doctor was destroyed' - BBC News
Figures obtained by a BBC Freedom of Information request suggest the GMC is more likely to investigate complaints against BAME doctors than those who are white.

Black and Asian doctors make up around a third of the workforce in the UK but are over-represented in fitness to practice cases.

The GMC said: "We know employers are more likely to refer BAME doctors than white doctors to the GMC. We want to understand why, and have commissioned independent experts to carry out a major piece of research into those disproportionate referrals."

These gaffes expose British politics’ real issue with race | Gary Younge | Opinion | The Guardian
Racism is not about politeness – it’s about power.

Words have meaning. Politicians have responsibilities. Racism is real. But because the media rarely call to talk about racial disparities in school exclusions, sentencing or poverty. Racism is a system of oppression rooted in history, politics, economics and culture. Our understanding of it should not be reduced to a litany of gaffes and flubs any more than it can be relegated to people shouting epithets and wielding baseball bats. These are the most glaring and dramatic manifestations of a broader, deeper problem – they should not be mistaken for the problem itself. Moreover, people have to the right to misspeak, be corrected, offer a proper apology and move on.

But over the past few weeks, the relentless parade of remarks, ranging from gauche to grotesque, suggests more than simply individual, off-the-cuff indiscretions. There is only so long one can keep talking about an isolated series of events before one must concede there may be a pattern. This return to the language of the 1970s, in which black people are “coloured” and Islamophobia is a matter for the Foreign Office, is moving in lockstep with the racial politics of the 1970s, with citizens being deported and non-white people considered foreign.

Minority ethnic Britons face 'shocking' job discrimination | World news | The Guardian
Black Britons and those of south Asian origin face “shocking” discrimination in the labour market at levels unchanged since the late 1960s, research has found.

A study by experts based at the Centre for Social Investigation at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, found applicants from minority ethnic backgrounds had to send 80% more applications to get a positive response from an employer than a white person of British origin.

A linked study by the same researchers, comparing their results with similar field experiments dating back to 1969, found discrimination against black Britons and those of south Asian origin – particularly Pakistanis – unchanged over almost 50 years.

For black women, cutting your hair off is political - as I and the star of a new Netflix drama well know | Fashion | The Guardian
The gravity of a black woman deciding to cut her hair off and go “natural” in a white supremacist society (yes, ours) should not be underestimated. Almost every black hairdresser I visited before finally plucking up the courage to cut my hair off told me I was making the wrong decision, but it was a reminder of how deeply entrenched these views are.
This isn’t just about looks: our wider history is stained by instances such as the apartheid-era pencil test in South Africa – those who could hold a pencil in their hair without it falling out could not be classified as white. To this day, black women and girls lose job offers and are sent to detention or are suspended because our hairstyles don’t suit white sensibilities.

For example, younger Western Europeans are more likely to say they personally know a Muslim and to say they are religiously unaffiliated; both of these factors are closely associated with lower NIM scores.

Are the women speaking up about sexual assault taking down celebrities or the patriarchy? / LGBTQ Nation
Within a patriarchal society that transmits distorted binary gender extremes, questions inevitably arise: How dare women demand their reproductive freedoms, which would reduce or even take away my (the male) making the decision whether to carry or abort my genetic offspring? How dare a woman choose not to marry a man? How dare women compete with me for a high social position?
How dare gay men think of coming onto me? How dare trans men take on the privileges by transitioning that I have “earned” from birth? How dare trans women relinquish male privilege and betray their gender (read as betray patriarchy itself)? How dare intersex people not choose to “become either one or the other”?
Toxic forms of hypermasculinity require the promotion and use of firearms to keep at bay the intensive psychosocial compulsive fear and dread of penetration from bullets, and by extension the gaze of gay and bisexual men, and the female gaze since patriarchy promises males the right to the aggressive outward intrusive gaze, the right of penetration of “others.” And when patriarchal social and family structures converge with patriarchal religious systems, which reinforce strictly defined gender hierarchies of male domination, women and girl’s oppression and oppression of those who transgress sexual-, sexuality-, and gender binaries and boundaries became inevitable.

Underfunded justice system 'crumbling', top criminal barrister says | Law | The Guardian
[pure rational rationing (workload) decisions out of necessity - by individuals, forced upon them by Austerity decisions] Failures to disclose evidence in rape prosecutions are a sign of the “dystopian disaster” engulfing the criminal justice system that has been caused by chronic government underfunding, the head of the criminal bar has warned. Angela Rafferty QC, who represents criminal barristers in England and Wales, criticised ministers for trying to promote the justice system as “a national asset” at the time of Brexit when in reality “the fabric of the court estate [is] crumbling”. [...] The Law Society, which represents solicitors across England and Wales, has launched legal action against the Ministry of Justice for cutting fees for defence lawyers, who have to examine increasingly large volumes of material recovered from mobile phones and laptops.

The sun may never set on British misconceptions about our empire | Ian Jack | Opinion | The Guardian
How much this avoidance has to do with Britain’s present feelings towards its old empire is hard to know. No doubt the history curriculum has changed since my day and, in any case, feelings about the past come from many other sources than the classroom. But according to a YouGov poll conducted around the time of the Rhodes Must Fall protests two years ago, 43% of British people believed the British empire was a good thing and only 19% a bad thing, with 25% believing it was neither. Furthermore, 44% felt that Britain’s history of colonialism was something to be proud of and only 19% felt it should be regretted. As to the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford, only 11% thought it should be removed.

Children's commissioner may consider legal action over Universal Credit - BBC News
Asked if there was any prospect of legal redress in Scotland, Mr Adamson said: "While we don't have the Convention on the Rights of the Child within our domestic law yet, we do have the Humans Rights Act which brings in the European Convention on Human Rights and the courts look very closely if a state falls below that minimum standard required, where the state fails to provide those basics of life.

Head teachers and their staff have taken to Twitter to highlight what may have to be axed in schools in England because of budget cuts.
There have been more than 27,000 tweets using the hashtag #whatwouldyoucut since the campaign against the cuts started on Sunday.
The government insists school investment is at a record £40bn.
But the Association of School and College Leaders said this was only because pupil numbers are rising.
It argued that head teachers are having to make tough decisions about which services to cut.

'Der unwille was mit dem anderen ist.' // 'Je oberflaechlicher jemand ist, desto eher wird sich jemand der banalitaet des boesen ergeben.' ie use of bigotry, prejudice, stigmata, cliche, alternative facts, ... xenohobia, hate speech,// Totalitarianism 14:15 - for far-right to rise, authoritarians, populismus to rise, need to create Luegenwelt, post-truth, post- fact, emotions only, alternative facts, ... brotbrett mit brotkrumen aud ihr doktrinen schnallen. Eine welt nur mut brotkrumen, da kann das funktionieren. Wo man sich ueber die Brokkrumen streitet (see NHS foreign patients charges debate). Adressing the emotional needs better than the centrists and the left, which also isnt reality. // Brexit also perpetuated as "Allmaechtig" single solution to all worries, needs, wants. // Ideology creates the evil itself. Ideology to monopolise truth. destroyes thinking as individual and perosnal individual judgement. // arends totalitarianism is classic, today w social media and internet and filter bubble it is neo-totalitarianism!!! no central organ it is a network connected riding on the same wave length for the same purpose.

Sarah Champion: Brexit is a crucial moment in our nation’s history – so let’s use it to be ambitious on equalities | LabourList
Given that equality is so central to EU law, and given the emphasis that has been placed by the prime minister on equality since her speech outside No 10 when she first entered Downing Street, it came as a surprise to me that the word “equality” does not appear once in the government’s white paper.

There is a brief mention of women’s rights in relation to maternity leave, but no mention of race, disability or sexuality and gender identity.

This cannot be credibly perceived as a deal that works for everyone in Britain if women, BAME, disabled people and LGBT communities aren’t even referenced in the white paper.
