The left should just admit it: victims aren’t always good people | Deborah Orr | Opinion | The Guardian
may 2017 by asterisk2a
[ see alain de botton analysis in one of the many videos, babies are a blank canvas, what happesn to them is a collective decision process, the environment in front of their eyes and as far back as westminster ] Human beings, despite the witless homilies of humanism, don’t all start out good and kind and perfect, only to have it driven out of them by a cruel world. Cherished children sometimes grow up to be antisocial, gazing with dead-eyed contempt at the people whose love they exploit. There can be no human utopia, because there will always be humans in it.

Denkmuster. Schwer heraus zu brechen! Kein kind komt als konsumer zur welt. Nacheifern wer erflogreich erscheint. Grunderfahrung Wachstum. Neugier. Dopamine. The new robot revolution will take the boss's job, not the gardener's | Business | The Guardian
january 2017 by asterisk2a
Advances in artificial intelligence mean a second wave of change is approaching – and it is not the low-paid service sector where jobs are most at risk // Studies have shown that technological change rather than trade has been responsible for the vast majority of the jobs lost in manufacturing in the developed world. Put simply, machines have replaced humans. Robots have taken over factories. // https://twitter.com/ianbremmer/status/822930363827757056 20/80 split. - Technology—not int'l trade—accounts for 85% of the lost manufacturing jobs in the US. Connie Fisher on Make-Up
april 2016 by asterisk2a
evolutionary psychology explanation: in more patriarchal societies, women wear less make-up (middle east v western world) make-up is a signal of equality. why do women wear make-up? "women have to show sexiness (attractiveness) to signal fertility. [...] subconscious natural selection." // industry worker "a treat, feeling good that rather looking good." // art, and can look like a different person // study showed that people prefer no-make-up make-up look. // advertising and marketing is positioning and spin it that it is seen in a feminist way along the way of 'you made the decision, you made yourself look better, ...' rarely do we judge men by their look ... ie rob ford toronto mayor, or chris christie. // Selfie has become a culture/pop culture phenomenon. bare face selfie is seen now as courageous! #trend - bare face is so alien to our make-up (look your best) norm/cultural norm! // putting on make-up and nice outfit (shopping, treat) can become coping mechanism against stress.

Fred Block: The Tenacity of the Free Market Ideology - YouTube
january 2016 by asterisk2a
Fred Block discusses his book “The Power of Market Fundamentalism,” which extends the work of the great political economist Karl Polanyi to explain why free market dogma recovered from disrepute after the Great Depression and World War II to become the dominant economic ideology of our time. // wo state role there would be no market system. // need social democracy in complex diverse society - representing people // freedom in complex diverse society = free of hunger and economic uncertain & freedom of nonconformity - protections, no marginalisation, no economic punishment // social democracy and free market are both Utopias // Thatcher & Co blaming State for malaise! nobody likes technocratic arguments, leaves public out, thus was able to make big return. // wealth creation through efficiency route takes more work and capital than predation (rentier/rent seeking) - ie relaxing fuel efficiency savings regulation for Detroit back in the days // trust that state can support innovation

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to give away 99% of shares - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
No longer should billionaires wait to die before handing over money to a different generation, Buffet said, in a gushing approval of Silicon Valley's newest and most influential power couple. Everything Mark Zuckerberg does is eyed with intense scrutiny, not least due to the nature of Facebook's business of making money from personal data. But while the 31-year-old's previous charitable efforts have been criticised for being too focused on building Facebook's user base, this latest pledge appears to leave the Facebook business to one side. // vs The best way to do good in the world is not to be a philanthropist. Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

instant gratification robs you of happiness, that results from putting in the work, being considered, mindful, thoughtful. effort can be the most rewarding thing in life. the pleasure of work. reward comes from hard work. --- a selfless life can bring much more pleasure than selfish life. we are social creatures. the only thing you've got to keep are your thoughts, emotions and health (well being, fitness)

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben? — der Freitag
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[!!!Autonomy im Rahmen der Gesellschaft!!!: Job, pay tax, shop, etc] //&! youtu.be/NKAevgGvqjw << also on delicious. &! youtu.be/csIW4W_DYX4 - Human Virtues!

Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
september 2015 by asterisk2a
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

[ abuse of human condition, evolution ] he argues that our social standing in today's society is no longer determined by the accent you speak with, the school you attended, or your parents. Rather, it is determined by the food we eat, our choice of holiday destination, the clothes we wear, the size of the TV we sit in front of, and whether you use a plug-in air freshener or a smelly candle. // &! Jessica Lahey’s ‘The Gift of Failure’: A Fear of Risk-Taking Has Destroyed Kids’ Love of Learning - The Atlantic
august 2015 by asterisk2a
When Success Leads to Failure. The pressure to achieve academically is a crime against learning. [...] Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning. [...] Is that what we want? Kids who get straight As but hate learning?

Study suggests safe alcohol guidance 'unrealistic' - BBC News
august 2015 by asterisk2a
But the study found that the guidelines are largely ignored because most people do not drink every day. Instead they drink heavily at the weekend - in order to get drunk. [ as socially acceptable outlet, from a weeks worth of chronic stress and worry. legal high and stress relieve as is tobacco. ] // thus as food can be used/abused as emotionally compforting and stress-reliever, binge drinking on the weekend as well as the habit for 2-3 drinks during weekdays to relieve the stress, should this behavior be space made in the DSM for disorder!? abuse/coping mechanism!/being dependent on it!? which is socially acceptable!. but long-term harmful to your health, as well as short-term to ur disposable income/savings rate & alcohol related injuries A&E & police force has to deal with!? --- Eating Disorders - bbc.in/1JRg4fu - Gemma and Dr Radha are on hand to talk about eating disorders.

Inequality and the Challenge of Employment - New Economic Thinking - YouTube
july 2015 by asterisk2a
intrinsic motivation, fairness, social animal - social comparison (is encoded into the brain) - status anxiety // self-interest mostly wins over ethics/moral values? // trust between principle & agent // org structure and inventive - ie bonus variable attracts more selfish people and risk takers // justice and fairness is critically important - not only in orgs but also democracies //&! Natural rate theory (equilibrium) - service sector jobs (unskilled manual labour jobs) w minimum wage and not higher. and flexible wages with no minimum wage (USA) create working poor/inequality. institutional change - economists are not just analysts they also affect policy makers (think tanks). // austerity hurts equality/social mobility = economic long-run damage to potential (thus output gap and productivity loss) - lack of supply of able workforce to create added value products & services. trickle-down not helping. //&! tax code unfair, lower capital gains tax than on earned (labour) income

The pursuit of happiness: what is happiness, and how can we make ourselves happier?
july 2015 by asterisk2a
Since the days of Aristotle, happiness was thought to have at least two aspects: hedonia (pleasure) and eudaimonia (a life well lived). In contemporary psychology, happiness is referred to as simply pleasure and meaning. Positive psychologists such as Dr Martin Seligman have recently added one more distinct component to the definition of happiness: engagement. Engagement refers to living a “good life” of work, family friends and hobbies. // see also David Brooks book on Character, living life for your eulogy.

W. Keith Campbell: The Narcissism Epidemic - YouTube
july 2015 by asterisk2a
Social Media = an instant in ones life. not ones life. but this disclosure isn't written in there. under pictures, videos, tweets. + Environment of status symbols, status anxiety, debt fueled (zombie) consumerism. Fast Fashion. Throwaway society. At large not being sustainable. Status quo. Living in the now. Binge Drinking. Keeping up with the John's. Millennials - everyone gets a trophy, even for participation. ... this environment creates a need to display being happy and successful and having everything in life. [...] abundance of digital gossip. whether its whatsapp/sms in own circle at large and in the tabloid [...] 'Narcissism predicts leaders, but not whether they are good or bad.' Exam stress affecting children, according to the NUT - BBC News
july 2015 by asterisk2a
[ learning for tests ... and to be useful (aka gainful employment) for the corporate state and crony capitalism ] School children are suffering from unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety because of government testing and a focus on academic results according to a report by the National Union of Teachers. Based on a survey of 8,000 teachers and a review of research, the report says drilling for tests has narrowed what children are learning.

Binge Media Culture Finds a Receptive Audience in Americans - NYTimes.com
may 2014 by asterisk2a
“With the things that get us to really crave the news, the tenor of the story tends to have a negative impact on the way we see the world more generally,” he said, referring to the controversial and scandalous subjects that draw in chronic readers and viewers. “We become more cynical.” Does he regard his own bingeing on these topics as escapist? + https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4aAJrJB6h0 + http://alaindebotton.com/news-users-manual/ “Absolutely,” he said. “You forget about your life for 30 minutes while you read about Chris Christie’s implosion.” Joshua Ferris’s forthcoming novel, “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour,” is about “the obsessive-compulsive nature of your own personality emerging through these platforms, and disliking the person who is taking advantage of them,” he said. Mr. Ferris, 39, confessed to bingeing on news, TV and YouTube videos, though he recently took a six-month purgative sabbatical.
