Revealed: legal aid cuts forcing parents to give up fight for children | Law | The Guardian
Ex-minister says cuts went too far, as Guardian investigation shows wide-ranging impact [...] “draconian”. Protracted austerity since 2012 has reduced funding by about £950m a year in real terms, causing an alarming rise in the number of people forced to represent themselves. [...] Prevented hundreds of thousands of people from pursuing justice in other areas such as housing, debt, employment, clinical negligence, immigration, welfare payments and education. [...] “What saved the courts from chaos is that [the government also] cut police funding. If you restored funding to the police and they caught and prosecuted more [suspects], the courts would be in desperate trouble.” &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/how-legal-aid-cuts-filled-family-courts-with-bewildered-litigants &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/strain-of-legal-aid-cuts-showing-in-family-housing-and-immigration-law &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/legal-aid-how-has-it-changed-in-70-years &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/27/its-completely-wrong-falsely-accused-tory-mp-attacks-legal-aid-cuts &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/27/secret-barrister-legal-aid-the-rule-law-cuts

Policing in parts of the UK is 'broken', says Police Federation chief | UK news | The Guardian
John Apter says stretched resources force police to ditch some crime investigations [...] “We can’t do everything – there are going to be situations where we simply can’t deliver the policing we want to deliver,” he said. “In those cases we are failing the public, but that’s not the fault of police officers on the ground, and in some cases it’s not the chief constable’s fault. “You can only slice the financial cake so many ways and you have to prioritise … The public are already suffering and they are going to suffer more and more.” Forces logged 5.5m crimes in the 12 months to March, a rise of 11% on the previous year and the highest tally for an equivalent period since 2005-06. // &! https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/aug/12/the-guardian-view-on-legal-aid-cuts-have-caused-chaos-and-must-be-reversed - The Guardian view on legal aid: cuts have caused chaos and must be reversed

Underfunded justice system 'crumbling', top criminal barrister says | Law | The Guardian
[pure rational rationing (workload) decisions out of necessity - by individuals, forced upon them by Austerity decisions] Failures to disclose evidence in rape prosecutions are a sign of the “dystopian disaster” engulfing the criminal justice system that has been caused by chronic government underfunding, the head of the criminal bar has warned. Angela Rafferty QC, who represents criminal barristers in England and Wales, criticised ministers for trying to promote the justice system as “a national asset” at the time of Brexit when in reality “the fabric of the court estate [is] crumbling”. [...] The Law Society, which represents solicitors across England and Wales, has launched legal action against the Ministry of Justice for cutting fees for defence lawyers, who have to examine increasingly large volumes of material recovered from mobile phones and laptops.

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.

Changes to legal aid for domestic violence victims ruled 'invalid' | Law | The Guardian
The decision comes after women’s rights campaigners argued large numbers of victims were being unlawfully blocked from legal aid, forcing many who have endured rape and beating at the hands of their partners to face their abusers in court without legal representation. Syria refugee crisis: six charts that show how Europe is struggling to respond | World news | The Guardian
Of the 1.2 million asylum applications filed, 356,805 were from Syrian applicants. The number of first-time applicants has grown hugely in the past five years. The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Europe has been driven primarily by applications from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] In Germany, one of the few EU countries to have reported full-year figures for 2015, there were almost 442,000 first-time asylum applications in 2015 alone: over a third of these by Syrians. Going through paperwork takes time, though; the country registered 428,468 Syrian arrivals last year. As a proportion of population, the most applications have been received in Hungary (649 applications per 100,000 population), Sweden (528 per 100,000 population) and Austria (where there were 273 applications per 100,000 population up to the end of November). //&! bit.ly/1o5FdLQ // Cameron Pays Up to keep them away and voters happy - bit.ly/1R3rJf5 &! bit.ly/1Kr9kqZ

Defence review: PM could send 10,000 troops on to streets - BBC News
Trident - about 31bn // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deterrence_theory - Up to 10,000 troops could be deployed on to British streets in the event of a Paris-style attack, David Cameron has said, as he announced plans for an extra £12bn for military equipment. The PM also said two 5,000-strong "strike brigades" would be created, as it was revealed the cost of renewing Trident could increase by £6bn. [...] the government's £178bn defence spending plans for the next decade // Comment: The extra £12bn going to the Ministry of Defence of course comes at a cost to other departments. Every penny that goes there has to come from somewhere else, and the depth of the cuts elsewhere will be revealed by George Osborne on Wednesday. Welfare, the police, and support for business are all likely to be hit. [...] what ground forces exist in Syria to take and hold land where IS is destroyed?

VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'

Syria crisis: Russia begins air strikes against Assad foes - BBC News
Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has confirmed. The strikes reportedly came in the rebel-controlled area of Hama province. Washington was informed in advance that they were about to take place. Syria's civil war has raged for four years, with armed groups - some of them Islamist, including the Islamic State (IS) group - fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed its ally remaining in power. Why Putin Wants to Meet Obama - Bloomberg View
Acting alone in Syria would be extremely risky for Russia. Putin can ill afford an unsuccessful military operation. Coordination with the U.S. would greatly increase the chances of success. For the U.S., though, an alliance with Putin comes with strings attached: Once Islamic State is defeated, Washington would need to discuss the post-war setup with Moscow, and they have a poor record of agreeing on anything. Also, if Obama retreated on his commitment to bring down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and agreed to a smooth transition of power in Damascus, he would give Republicans a new pretext to accuse him of weakness.

[Instability in Libya contributes to the migration crisis - bit.ly/1Qs2Upt - also mentions Lybia - bit.ly/1NG5cCq "crisis everywhere" europe is engulfed and involed in their own crises: sovereign debt, refugees, brexit, grexit, Brussels, political crisis, low growth (deflation fear) ... // &! bit.ly/1OJNA9n - The 550 million dollar program launched last year to train moderate Syrian rebel forces did not bring any results. According to the White House "he [ POTUS] had never believed in the strategy, anyway". &! bit.ly/1JjNy0O &! bit.ly/1QG0bti - 'Europe is responsible for the current refugee crisis, because it supported the West’s aggressive foreign policy in the Middle East. Such a statement was made by Syrian President Bashar Assad in an interview with Russian media outlets.' // [ EU seems 2be fucked bc only NATO soldiers on ground will work. who will bite bullet first? & also HAVE TO cooperate w Assad-Regime. ]

Michael Lüders über den Krieg in Syrien - 10.09.2015 - YouTube
- Russia about to support Assad!? If Assad falls, ISIS all across Syria. West Airstrike tactic/offinsive is only for public posturing. And Saudi Arabia is supplying ISIS. And West has a foot in Iran after atom-negotiations. Israel is another political/geopolitical/religious player. And NATO gives green light to bomb PKK which fights against ISIS. ... LOL. // ISIS, Taliban, al-Qaida is made in USA. // Europe pays price for USA foreign policy! trying to export western values and democracy into Middle East. // 20 year civil war in Middle East followed by decades of USA military intervention. // USA training fighter to fight against ISIS and Assad is not working! // Diplomacy is falling short. Especially w current sactions against Russia by West because of Ukraine/Crimea Crisis. // Complexity of situation can not be solved w bombs and military invasion ... // &! youtu.be/mLm6Yn5lrX4 - Book - Middle East history.

Drohende Staatspleite: Ökonomen geben Griechenland auf - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten - Wirtschaft
European Monetary Fund
Eurozone Bond market
