More than half of A&Es 'not good enough' - BBC News
Half of A&Es in England are not good enough - and there are no guarantees services will get better despite the extra money going into the NHS, the regulator says.

The Care Quality Commission said people were turning to A&E in a crisis because of a lack of support in the community.

It said services would remain under pressure until a funding solution was found for social care.

The government pledged in the Queen's Speech to reform social care.

Police custody deaths hit 10-year high, with experts citing austerity | UK news | The Guardian
Police custody deaths have hit their highest level in a decade with police, campaigners and experts warning that austerity and a crisis in mental health services have driven the figure up.

A total of 23 people died in or after detention in 2017-18, according to official figures released by the police watchdog, up from 14 people the previous year.

More than half had mental health problems, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who said the conditions included psychosis, depression and self-harm or suicidal tendencies. Eighteen people had drug and or alcohol issues.

NHS failure is inevitable – and it will shock those responsible into action | Jan Filochowski | Opinion | The Guardian
When this happens, as it is now, pretty much across the board, things don’t get worse by 3% because demand has increased by 3%, they get worse by 50% or 100% because there is no slack left to deal with what is only a 3% increase. And the figures are now showing just this: failure multiplying while demand increases only marginally.

Food Standards Scotland chief says NHS at 'tipping point' amid obesity crisis | HeraldScotland
However, the head of Scotland's food watchdog said he believed there was a growing consensus in public and political opinion that a "tipping point" was being reached in the battle against obesity, and that a failure to reverse the crisis would eventually "cripple the NHS". GPs offered cash to refer fewer people to hospital | Society | The Guardian
NHS Coastal West Sussex CCG has offered to give groups of practices working together in its area 50% of savings made from GPs referring fewer patients for dermatology care, ear, nose and throat treatment in the community, and minor surgery and wound closure. It’s a serious dereliction of duty, influenced by CCGs trying to balance their books.” [...] would let hospitals treat the most needy cases. Over 3,700 deaths linked to alcohol - BBC News
Alcohol was a factor in more than 3,700 deaths in a single year in Scotland, according to new research.

Findings from NHS Health Scotland show that drink was involved in more than 1,000 deaths from cancer in 2015.

It was also linked to hundreds of deaths from conditions such as liver disease, as well as accidental injuries.

In addition, more than 41,000 people were admitted to hospital as a result of consuming alcohol, the study found.

Experts said the findings show that alcohol has a wider impact on health than many people think.

NHS faces even worse winter crisis than last year, watchdog warns | Society | The Guardian
In an update on how the NHS in England performed between July and September, NHSI said hospitals did not succeed in freeing up the target of 2,000-3,000 beds by September, which would have helped them cope with the extra winter demand.

NHS leaders and the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, told hospitals in the spring that they needed to reduce the number of beds occupied due to “delayed transfers of care” – patients who are fit to leave but cannot safely be discharged – to 3.5% of their total number by September. Doctors to breathalyse smokers before allowing them NHS surgery | Society | The Guardian
He said that by introducing “increasingly harsher policies” CCGs might believe they were alleviating financial pressure but they could actually cost more in the long term because of the risk of complications and the cost of healthcare in the interim. The CCGs said no financial savings were expected as a result of the measures, which they claimed were aimed at improving the long-term health of residents. They also stressed that if at any time the harm of waiting for surgery outweighed the benefit of losing weight or stopping smoking, then the patient would be referred.

Jeremy Hunt considers barring walk-in patients from A&E | Society | The Guardian
“We know that the main issue contributing to pressures in A&E is not inappropriate attendance, but a lack of hospital beds, and a lack of the community support services patients need when they are discharged, so they end up staying in hospital for longer than they needed to.” [...] She added: “Maybe a pilot will identify some good ways of reducing genuinely inappropriate use of A&E, but that this idea is even circulating speaks volumes about the consequences of the government’s decision to underfund the NHS. The chancellor must take note, and respond in his budget next month.”

NHS future precarious, says regulator - BBC News
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) says the health system is "straining at the seams" and faces a "precarious" future.
The England's regulator's annual report raised concerns about staff shortages, rising demand and the number of patients with preventable illnesses. It said so far the quality of NHS and council care has been maintained but warned standards were likely to drop. //>> GPs not focused to reverse diet lifestyle diesease. // "We are going to see a fall in the quality of services that are offered to people and that may mean that the safety of some people is compromised,"

Care Appointments | Extra £5 million for NHS Scotland to reduce delays and ease winter pressures
Last winter health boards were given £12 million in additional winter resilience funding and the previous year they received £10.7 million.

This year’s funding follows a £59 million health service cash boost announced in May to drive down waiting times, £9 million of which was targeted at improving A&E performances on waiting times and delayed discharges.

NHS accused of keeping secret its plans to cut services | Society | The Guardian
STP + CEP + CCG's discretion what and who is more important // The NHS has been accused of keeping the public in the dark about controversial plans to plug a £250m funding gap by rationing services.

The crowdfunded campaign group 38 Degrees submitted freedom of information (FOI) requests to the government, NHS leaders as well as trusts and clinical commissioning groups in the 13 areas affected but all except two refused to release details of planned changes.

Leaked proposals from three areas have already revealed plans including downgrading or closing A&Es and extending waiting times for operations, and 38 Degrees says the public is entitled to know what else is in store.

Overburdened NHS faces 'winter of woe', leading doctors warn | Society | The Guardian
A total of 181,692 bed days were lost in hospitals in England in July to “delayed transfers of care”, when patients are fit to leave but cannot be safely discharged. Prof Derek Alderson, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said hospitals’ ability to cope with the coming winter was at risk because so many beds were tied up with such patients. [...] A war of words between local councils and the NHS broke out on Thursday over who was to blame for the high number of patients trapped in hospital. [bc on both sides, money was not spend on care that was allocated but elsewhere to pluck holes] [...] It also emerged on Thursday that the number of written complaints about NHS services in England rose by 5% last year – with GPs a particular target of patients’ frustration.
