Almost all the 10 million jobs created since 2005 are temporary — Quartz
“We find that 94% of net job growth in the past decade was in the alternative work category,” said Krueger. “And over 60% was due to the [the rise] of independent contractors, freelancers and contract company workers.” In other words, nearly all of the 10 million jobs created between 2005 and 2015 were not traditional nine-to-five employment. - https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/comments/79jmuh/almost_all_the_10_million_jobs_created_since_2005/

Brexit may leave holes in UK equality laws · PinkNews
The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.
She said: “I would think that LGBT rights are so mainstream and respected by the majority of people in this country that that wouldn’t happen.
“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

LGBT people need straight allies to lend a helping hand | Matthew Todd | Opinion | The Guardian
This week, hundreds of heterosexual Dutch men held hands to show solidarity with the victims of a homophobic attack. Such actions are vital to progress [...] Today we drastically need straight people to speak up about the situation in schools. School bullying and isolation is where the higher levels of anxiety, depression, suicide ideation and addiction that LGBT people statistically have, begins.

Sarah Champion: Brexit is a crucial moment in our nation’s history – so let’s use it to be ambitious on equalities | LabourList
Given that equality is so central to EU law, and given the emphasis that has been placed by the prime minister on equality since her speech outside No 10 when she first entered Downing Street, it came as a surprise to me that the word “equality” does not appear once in the government’s white paper.

There is a brief mention of women’s rights in relation to maternity leave, but no mention of race, disability or sexuality and gender identity.

This cannot be credibly perceived as a deal that works for everyone in Britain if women, BAME, disabled people and LGBT communities aren’t even referenced in the white paper.

Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. [ Globalisation as a great rebalancing of the world economy between the west and the rest (BRIC and co) ] [...] Only government can provide the cure, with a commitment to invest where the private sector cannot or will not go.

German Banks Told To Start Hoarding Cash | Zero Hedge
In order to generate artificial economic growth, the ECB wants banks to make as many loans as possible, no matter how stupid or idiotic. They believe that economic growth is simply a function of loans. The more money that’s loaned out, the more the economy will grow. This is the sort of theory that works really well in an economic textbook. But it doesn’t work so well in a history textbook. Cheap money encourages risky behavior. It gives banks an incentive to give ‘no money down’ loans to homeless people with no employment history. It creates bubbles (like the housing bubble from 10 years ago), and ultimately, financial panics (like the banking crisis from 8 years ago). Banks are supposed to be conservative, responsible managers of other people’s money. When central bank policies penalize that practice, bad things tend to happen.

Meet the teachers, charity workers, NHS staff and scientists Theresa May wants to kick out of Britain | Home News | News | The Independent
In April, new immigration laws will see tens of thousands of skilled workers deported from the UK [...] The Government has responded to a petition urging it to scrap a new £35,000 pay threshold on non-EU workers, calling it a “modest” contribution to cut net migration to Britain. Yet the Government’s own analysis estimates the measure will cost up to £575 million to the taxpayer in the first year alone, and it has sparked a public outcry from the tens of thousands of people set to be affected. From stop35k.org/#!blank/c1enr - "Tier 2 General Skilled Workers who do not make £35,000 salary or who have been in the UK for 6 years, will need to leave or be deported. Businesses warned not to hire someone based on sex, age or nationality Asking for a Polish builder or a 'barmaid' could land employers in hot water Warning comes after latest guidelines were issued on the Equality Act Advertising for 'mature' candidate or 'recent graduate' could breach rules [...] It further warns that adverts that imply a particular age group, such as those that might call for someone who is 'mature' or a 'recent graduate', would breach the regulations. Other examples of adverts that may break the law would be those who call for particular strengths, such as being tall, as this could be discriminatory against women. Mass EU migration into Britain is actually good news for UK economy | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom! offer of Brexit vote was election move out of fear, UKIP gains ] Far from the unfounded headlines about EU migrants grabbing British jobs, record numbers of British citizens are in work too [...] the quarterly labour market survey – showed that record numbers of British citizens were in work too. Indeed, 1 million more Britons are in work and 850,000 more Europeans are working in Britain since David Cameron became prime minister. [...] Britain should not be seen as a sudden, recent mass invasion to be necessarily feared by every British worker. It is now a fact of life that Britain has been a country of net mass migration every year for the past 20 years. [...] European migrants are not a drain on Britain’s finances; what is more, they actually pay in more in taxes than they take out in state benefits. Long hours, endless admin and angry parents – why schools just can’t get the teachers | Education | The Guardian
British schools are reporting a classroom crisis, with thousands of disaffected teachers leaving the profession, and new graduates discouraged from training because of the daily stress and grind. And with the number of state school pupils set to rise by a million by 2022, the problem is only getting worse [...] If somebody had said, ‘You can have 60 grand a year to stay,’ I would still have said no // Education secretary Nicky Morgan. // [...] Some of the factors behind stories like these are traceable to the New Labour years, but many are rooted in Michael Gove’s hyperactive four-year reign as education secretary. They go from never-ending paperwork, to a constantly changing regime of exams and assessments. Meanwhile, the prospect of a visit from Ofsted and the possibility of a bad inspection are a constant source of stress – not least because a “requires improvement” or the dread “inadequate” rating will mean even more upheaval. Under-40s worse off as result of state pension changes, data shows | Money | The Guardian
[ how do you save up when you can afford housing (nor even a mortgage, have credit cards (drinks and presents), and student loan. all the while tories help to prop-up the property bubble, the only wealth uk households actually have! ] Most people now in their teens, 20s and 30s will be worse off as a result of changes to the state pension system, while millions of older people will gain, according to the government’s own figures. The data will fuel concern that millions of younger people are suffering from the effects of what has been dubbed “intergenerational unfairness”, partly caused by the government targeting money and resources at the older generation. DWP issued the data to back up its assertion that the introduction of the new flat-rate state pension in April “will make millions of people better off” – but the figures also provide stark confirmation that younger people will be losers from the changes.

Why should Rachel Watt have to sleep in her wheelchair? | Frances Ryan | Opinion | The Guardian
This is the hidden face of Britain’s social care crisis: disabled people left without help in their own homes. Read most coverage of the cuts to social care and it is easy to believe the crisis solely affects older people. According to research by Scope, 83% of disabled people in this country are now living without sufficient hours in their care package. That means being unable to get out of the house or waiting 14 hours to go to the toilet. This is what happens when austerity strips £4.6bn from social care spending in five years. As the government squeezes local authorities, social care has been left with a “funding gap” – a gaping wound, shall we say – that is growing by £700m a year. The King’s Fund thinktank has told the Guardian that the financial prospects for Britain’s social care system in 2016 “could not be worse”. [...] The biggest trick the government can play is the myth that any of this is inevitable. [...] It is the political choice[.]

Disabled students fear loss of essential support - BBC News
[ easy thing to move double digit spend off balance sheet onto someone else's - Career Politicians trick ] "Disabled students should be allowed equal opportunities to non-disabled students and to put it bluntly, the cuts to DSA limit our futures. "Having discussed the cuts to DSA with deaf and other disabled students I have seen a trend in a loss of hope. These students, myself included, feel disregarded by the government and our access to higher education has been unjustly restricted." [...] The National Union of Students fears small, specialised institutions will struggle to meet the costs. Disabled students' officer Maddy Kirkman said the changes risked inconsistency in support and complained the government had ignored these concerns. [...] The Green party said the changes amounted to a £70m cut to support for disabled students. [...] She warned that disabled students could "fall into a no man's land" with government and universities each claiming it is the other's responsibility.

We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. The disabled and jobless need help, not harassment | Barbara Ellen | Comment is free | The Guardian
No one wants to stop disabled people working, to patronise or stereotype them, or condemn them to a life in the shadows. However, helping disabled people back into employment should be just about that – helping them. Instead, we’re left with a flimsy cover for herding and bullying highly vulnerable people out of the benefits system. //&! bit.ly/1MncLfD - Report on death of Michael O’Sullivan blames work capability assessment and warns of risk of more such deaths unless DWP takes action [...] this is believed to be the first time the work capability assessment (WCA) process has been blamed directly for a death. [nasty party. no representation 4 sick, vulnerable *disabled. minority of society. dont cut @ur constituency; babyboomers, middle class, pensioners, Establishment, Privileged, corp, tax avoiders, oligarchs, ... ] IDS can talk of supporting people in their returns to employment, but the system his department has created is anything but supportive. It is frightening, punitive and messy. If we really want to support people to get better both through work and in order to work, ESA should be in the care of the Department of Health, not Work and Pensions. Illness and disability are not matters of employment, but of health. We have created a society where we can only see disabled people as non-functioning economic units, at the expense of their wellbeing. We cannot rename benefits to hide ill and disabled people. They already cut ESA work related activity group to JSA level. Plus their neoliberal policy take, that employees should have to pay into their own unemployment fund. Dismantling step by step the welfare, public service & social service Europe is known for & which actively reduces poverty trap and inequality. // Equality Act 2010

Germany’s bizarre version of capitalism—where bosses and workers actually cooperate—is winning - Quartz
via - http://redd.it/3ge85e // In recent years, some countries have tried to copy elements of German capitalism. With youth unemployment near 50%, Spain is looking to boost German-style apprenticeship programs. France is experimenting with measures that allow unionized companies to cut working hours and preserve jobs during downturns. Britain wants to build a Mittelstand of its own. So far, none have transformed these economies. And they likely won’t. German policies function well because they are designed to work in the context of the German economy, where institutions like trade unions and industry associations have proven uniquely effective at coordinating wages and production over time. “That structure is built up over decades if not centuries,” says Hall, of Harvard. “So countries can’t immediately emulate it.” [...] To be sure, the German system isn’t perfect.

Was ist da los? [...] ]

How do you deal with mental health problems in the workplace?
The charity Mind has published research demonstrating that the “culture of fear and silence around mental health” can cost employers dearly, with 1 in 5 people taking days off due to stress, and 1 in 10 leaving positions because of stress. Mind also found that 56 per cent of employers surveyed said they would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing but didn’t t feel they had the right training or guidance to do so. That’s more than half, and it puts a big pin in Wax’s assertion that “employers will find a reason to fire you anyway”.

Staatsverschuldung als Problem der Generationengerechtigkeit | Lars P. Feld | SWR Tele-Akademie - YouTube
henry paulson and tim geithner said they are in a moral hazard. put it the way to either nationalise (aka the end of American Dream, Failure part of capitalism) or bailout (gov loans and co like TARP). Rather the moral hazard was to either put current and future unborn generation in debt servitude they had nothing to do with and keep criminals private with all its benefits. Or really give a warning shot a privatise banks and end the profligacy of crony capitalism and Wall Streets shareholder value creation only and profit maximisation - without consequences. // and Europe looks towards USA and did the same; made banks whole again (because they were really - TBTF - and would pushed some EU countries into Great Depression/Insolvency. especially France & Belgium where bank liabilities were too big for public balance sheet) and took some of the debt onto its public balance sheet (and gave bailout loans) to be served by current & future unborn generation.

| rbb Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg

"Did Somebody Repeal The Laws Of Mathematics?" | ZeroHedge
Back then (2010), the general opinion was that if the contagion spread to Spain the game was over because there wasn’t enough money with which to bail out an economy the size of The Kingdom of Spain. I’m not sure exactly what happened— maybe I wasn’t paying attention—but suddenly, almost two years on and in an environment where even the rich nations of Europe are seeing an undeniable slide towards recession, there is no talk about Spain being ‘too-big-to-bail’ anymore.

-

Looking at it all :: the market (Spanish gov showed them some slides ...) assumes that Spain will get out of recession by 2013 with pa growth of 1.6% as internal demand will rise again.
