The Yellow Vests and Why There Are So Many Street Protests in France | The New Yorker
Two truths hold: rage is ignored at its peril and must always be addressed, however irrational it may seem; and rage can never, in itself, constitute a politics. Those who bet that they can benefit from rage, or exploit it, eventually lose their bets, and sometimes their heads. It is vital, as the yellow vests symbolically remind us, that everyone in a nation is seen. But being seen is not the same as being saved. That takes the hard work of real reform.

Deconstructing: Chris Brown, Surfer Blood, And Villainizing Entertainers - Stereogum
We can play high and mighty when shit gets real, call for some kind of justice where the “bad” musicians don’t get to have successful careers anymore. But any lines we draw about whose music is tainted seem arbitrary to me, particularly in a culture that celebrates moral ambiguity. Where is the line between Chris Brown and, say, that angelic beacon of truth and wisdom Frank Ocean? If “Wiseman” is anything to go on, Ocean would probably argue there is no line. He’d be absolutely right.

Singer tackles gay bashing, suicide in new video
"I think many musicians separate themselves from what they're actually going through in real life for fear of being judged for, you know, what their political views are (and) what they feel personally about things that are going on in the real world," she said. "Music for me is personal and that's the only way I know how to approach it."

A Culture of Poverty - Ta-Nehisi Coates - Personal - The Atlantic
I suspect that a large part of the problem, when we talk about culture, is an inability to code-switch, to understand that the language of Rohan is not the language of Mordor. I don't say this to minimize culture, to the contrary, I say it to point how difficult it is to get people to discard practices which were essential to them in one world, but hinder their advancement into another. And then there's the fear of that other world, that sense that if you discard those practices, you have discarded some of yourself, and done it in pursuit of a world, that you may not master.

Rihanna beating photo: Can public handle ugly truth? - Los Angeles Times
Establishment media outlets had a much more negative, or at best ambivalent, reaction to the picture. Part of that stemmed from a legitimate concern about verifying the source of the photo and whether it accurately reflected the singer's injuries.

WaPo: Clothes Aren't the Issue
"At the sermon's end, I approached Shalash. 'This is America,' I protested. 'How can you tell men to beat their wives?' 'They should beat them lightly,' he explained. 'It's in the Koran.' "
