Corey Robin on the ‘Historovox’: What We Missed About Trump
The task is not to provide useful knowledge to the present; it is to insist on, to keep a record of, the most seemingly useless counter-knowledge from the past — for the sake of an as-yet-to-be imagined future.

California Über Alles | Ann Friedman
"Believe me, I understand the temptation to separate yourself: it’s true that I am different from the people I grew up with who chose to stay in Iowa. Part of that difference is, now, an economic and cultural advantage. So I have a dual responsibility: to see that California actually makes good on its professed values, and to ensure that those values incorporate the rest of America. Refusing to rationalize elite neglect is the real rebellion."

First Lady marks International Women’s Day with Hillary ‘President’ joke - Yahoo! News
The first lady also picked up on these ideas of stronger public recognition for women in her remarks on Monday, when the White House hosted its own event marking the importance of the March 8th holiday. "I get to speak while he stands and watches," the first lady announced, as the president looked on. She then told the president, "Look at me adoringly," to laughter from the crowd. He obliged with the reply, "I can do that"-whereupon she mock-chided him with the follow-up command, "With sincerity."

"I noticed a couple of very attractive women, both of them Republicans, in the legislature," Nixon told Bush. "I want you to be sure to emphasize to our people, God, let's look for some… Understand, I don't do it because I'm for women, but I'm doing it because I think maybe a woman might win someplace where a man might not… So have you got that in mind?"

Bush replies, "I'll certainly keep it in mind."

Flickr Creates New License for White House Photos | Epicenter
The change marks a first for Flickr, which to date has not had a license for government works, other than a “No Known Copyright Restriction” license that is used on photos from its Commons project, which includes photos from some of the world’s greatest museums and libraries. Those photos include ones from the Library of Congress, for instance, that never were copyright since they were made or paid for by the federal government

John Hope Franklin, Scholar and Witness -
“My mother and I used to have a game we’d play on our public,” Dr. Franklin said not long ago, his voice full of artful pauses, words pulled out like taffy. “She would say if anyone asks you what you want to be when you grow up, tell them you want to be the first Negro president of the United States. And just the words were so far-fetched, so incredible that we used to really have fun, just saying it.”

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall - Errol Morris Blog -
During the last week of the Bush administration, I asked the head photo editors of these news services — Vincent Amalvy (AFP), Santiago Lyon (AP) and Jim Bourg (Reuters) — to pick the photographs of the president that they believe captured the character of the man and of his administration. There are overlapping pictures — of the president with a bullhorn at Ground Zero, of the president looking out the window of Air Force One over New Orleans, of the president receiving the news on the morning of 9/11. It is interesting that these pictures are different. They may be of the same scene, but they have different content. They speak in a different way.

SFGate: Oath flub merits a do-over, scholars say
"He should probably go ahead and take the oath again," Turley said. "If he doesn't, there are going to be people who for the next four years are going to argue that he didn't meet the constitutional standard. I don't think it's necessary, and it's not a constitutional crisis. This is the chief justice's version of a wardrobe malfunction."

McClatchy blog: Sidebar: Obama v. Roberts
The two Harvard Law School graduates faced off across the Bible. Each had their role to play. It was Chief Justice Roberts' job to guide Obama through the oath, piece by piece. There then followed, though, a rhetorical hiccup that interrupted the smooth narrative flow. Their timing was off, in part; the two men were not in sync, and the Chief Justice then complicated matters by flipped the phrasing in a way that momentarily threw Obama off.

A Conservative for Obama | D Magazine - Dallas Fort Worth's Resource for City Guides, Daily Blogs, D Bests, and Restaurants
“Every great cause,” Eric Hoffer wrote, “begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” As a cause, conservatism may be dead. But as a stance, as a way of making judgments in a complex and difficult world, I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

Why McCain can't stop saying "my friends." - By Paul Collins - Slate Magazine
"Among the wide ranks of modern presidential 'my frienders'—let us call them MF'ers for short—only Jimmy Carter and 'Silent Cal' Coolidge appear to have been determined to avoid the term. For Democrats and Republicans alike, it seems, a president who isn't a little bit of an MF'er is a once-in-a-century event."

"In the world of political stagecraft, where songs are used as stimulants and signifiers, lyrics often don't matter, particularly if they fall outside of the chorus. (Very notable exception: Barack Obama's surprising use of Brooks and Dunn's country-rocker "Only in America" following last night's speech.
