Rather than paying a license fee for Google’s suite of apps (Gmail, Maps, Chrome, etc.), these manufacturers want someone to pay them for pre-installs. Benedict Evans asks: “How many of these devices will have Google Play? How many users will install Google Maps? How many will come with a third-party web browser (from Tencent, say), one or two of the dozens of major Android app stores operating in China, or Amazon’s app store?” Expect to see Android devices in Jakarta, Addis Ababa, and Tehran that experiment with alternatives to Google apps.

Why Mobile Web Matters | NPR Digital Services
A Nielsen survey shows that a third of tablet and smartphone owners have downloaded a news app in the past 30 days. In addition, news apps can be very successful at driving deeper engagement with content. For people using NPR apps, for example, there are more pageviews and more return visits than for people using NPR.org.

But for all their success, the benefits of having an app (especially as an engine for capturing new audience) are starting to plateau, because apps are turning out to be most successful for only one segment of your audience. Research is showing that apps attract the particularly loyal segment of your audience who is already consuming a lot more news. In a study of tablet users, Pew found that these “power news users” spend twice as much time consuming news as do browser users. For users who want a daily fix and are proud advocates of stations, apps are the preferred channel.

But of course, stations want to reach a wider audience of casual users as well. And for this larger segment of casual users, mobile-optimized web pages are the preferred way to access your content.

Ultimately, the authors concluded that not every company needs to have an iPad app, and that far too many companies are putting out suboptimal versions of their content, seemingly just to get in on the platform. They stressed that iPad apps should not make users do more work than the actual websites, and are best received when geared toward the actions of repeat users who are already familiar with the brand. If a company can't create an app with added value, the authors said, they're better off just making their website more finger-friendly.

And the opportunity is far larger than pick-up basketball, or even sports.  Every school is a network, every employer is a network, every bar is a network, every office building is a network, every hobby is a network, every neighborhood is a network, and at an extreme level, every shared interest is a network, regardless of location.

This doesn’t even get at the disposable, or elastic networks as discussed by companies like Nearverse and Color – people that happen to just be nearby each other for a snapshot of time.

All of these networks share two common characteristics.  1) They are not yet graphed in a mainstream way by Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Jive, or any other dominant, online social service; and 2) They are all mappable with a smartphone.

Its activity on Twitter seems to match my own perceptions of how they’re doing — an early rush of excitement; a decline as people lost interest and the app struggled with technical problems; a plateau once the tech got sorted out; and then another decline once the app started charging users.

In the nearly two months we’re looking at, only 6,026 tweets were generated within The Daily app. But much more discouraging is the trend.

Amusingly, one of the boons of Android also turned out to be a detraction, for after Seesmic's installation, I would not only receive notifications from the native Twitter app that replies and messages were waiting, but the same activity would double down my alerts, coming from Seesmic as well. So I did the unthinkable and the official Twitter app is off my Android devices, which eliminates duplication. Meanwhile, on Windows 7, Seesmic was the first app I downloaded, comfortable the experience would be familiar and very useful.

One-quarter (24%) of mobile local news consumers report having an app that helps them get information or news about their local community. That equates to 13% of all device owners and 11% of the total American adult population. Thus while nearly 5 in 10 get local news on mobile devices, just 1 in 10 use apps to do so. Call it the app gap.

These mobile app users skew young and Hispanic. They are also much more active news consumers than other adults, using more sources regularly and “participating” in local news by doing such things as sharing or posting links to local stories, commenting on or tagging local news content, or contributing their own local content online.

Many news organizations are looking to mobile platforms to provide new ways to generate revenue in local markets. [...] Currently, only 10% of adults who use mobile apps to connect to local news and information pay for those apps. This amounts to just 1% of all adults.

[A]fter a decade of SEO, a lot of lowest common denominator is what we have.

But a focus on readers rather than advertisers as the heart of business model will, inevitably, create a more segmented dynamic, as the strongest appeals to readers tend to be in niches, and as, to venture an impolite reminder, some readers are a great deal more valuable than others. This is not only because some readers have more money to spend on content (as they do, admittedly, on the goods and services offered by advertisers), although that is true. But it is also, and ultimately more importantly true, that some readers are willing to spend more time, to develop greater loyalty to particular content, to value it more highly.

Improved search, and diminished SEO, should tend place a greater value on such readers, elevating content of higher value, higher quality and, therefore, higher cost.

That would matter a great deal.

Illiteracy has fallen from one in five people to almost nonexistent over a century and a bit.  But “illiteracy” clearly isn’t a single on-or-off switch. It’s not just “you can read and write or you can’t.” Literacy is a continuum of skills. Basic education now reaches virtually all Americans.  But many among the poorest have the weakest skills in formal English.

That combines with another fact: more people are writing than ever before. Even most of the poor today have cell phones and and internet. When they text or scribble on Facebook, they’re writing. We easily forget that this is something that farmhands and the urban poor almost never did in centuries past. They lacked the time and means even if they had the education.

Speed, lightness and versatility will be key success factors. There won’t be much tolerance for latency.

Reflections of a Newsosaur: Prime time for iPad may be prime time
While these findings suggest interesting ways to release, package and market content for the iPad, it also must be noted that the research is limited to a sample of people who are sufficiently motivated to time-shift content to use this particular app.

Until someone researches consumption patterns across the entire universe of iPad owners, we won’t know whether this group of users is typical or exceptional.

If a broader study finds that prime time indeed is the prime time for iPad use, newspaper publishers may want to consider producing products that come out early in the evening, instead of in the morning or after their print products are put to bed at midnight.

Fresh news timed to arrive at dinnertime would be an interesting blast from the past for those of us who once worked on afternoon newspapers.

The Facebook Setting You Should Change as Quickly as Possible
By default, Facebook sends your access credentials in the clear, with no encryption whatsoever. Switching to HTTPS is important because a browser extension called Firesheep has made it especially easy for anyone sharing your open wireless network—at cafe or conference, for example—to sniff your credentials and freely access your account. One blogger sitting in a random New York Starbucks was able to steal 20-40 Facebook identities in half an hour. HTTPS solves this longstanding problem by encrypting your login cookies and other data; in fact the inventor of Firesheep made the software to encourage companies like Facebook to finally lock down their systems.

Microsoft: Consumers Should Think Twice Before Broadcasting Location | Ina Fried | Mobilized | AllThingsD
Microsoft’s research found that privacy concerns are a barrier for some to adopting location-based services, particularly in the U.S. About half of overall survey respondents said they would be more comfortable with such services if they had more information on just who was seeing the information being shared.

The company also found that while 94 percent of consumers find location-based services to be valuable, they weren’t terribly willing to pay, and those who were often weren’t willing to pay more than $10 for such services. That seems to indicate more promise for advertising-funded services, especially since nearly half of those who have seen a location-based mobile ad have taken action on the ad–vastly higher than the response rates seen on traditional online ads.

And what's this? Zokem, a mobile analytics company founded by some ex-Nokia executives, came out with a damning report on Nokia's U.S. smartphone user loyalty, Tuesday. Out of the eight smartphone platforms surveyed, Symbian had the poorest churn (defined as "the likelihood to shift to a competing platform during the next 12 months.")
At an astoundingly high 94%, it even exceeded webOS, which HP hasn't managed to prove isn't a dead platform). Yes, only 6% of users would buy another Symbian device. Unsurprisingly, surveyed Symbian users indicated that they mostly planned to move to iPhone (33%), Android (25%) or Windows Phone (25%).

I decided not to lug my laptop to Mexico for this reporting trip. Instead I'm working with my iPod Touch (4th Generation) and an external bluetooth keyboard.

It's worked really well so far. I upgraded my iPod before I left so that I could make use of the on-board microphone and the bluetooth support that the newest iPods have. I picked up a Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 the night before I left because I like the key action better than the Apple keyboards, which must have been made for graphic designers who can´t speal anyway. And I use a cheap plastic stand for the iPod while I'm typing.

It’s not so much about where you are as it is about why you are there. Simply checking in at the grocery store might not supply anyone with useful information, but noting that the grocery store is playing your favorite band, or that there is an outrageous sale on delicious baked goods adds a layer to the check-in that can really excited people. It’s about sharing experiences, because other people can relate to experiences.

As for mayorships and badges – unless gaining rewards (which come around once in a while, but not frequently enough), these provide a very basic function, which is that of a simple reward. One might collect mayorships or badges similar to the way we collected things and played games when we were children. You never got any real reward from winning a game of Monopoly, but you had fun while playing, right?

Note that I’m not suggesting that the market for high-end smartphones is threatened yet–there is still a lot of innovation that still needs to happen to shape that market into one of mobile computing (vs. mobile phoning).

However, the higher-income households have not abandoned traditional media altogether; they also turn to print and television, especially for local news. Asked about various platforms where they might get the news on a typical day, 76% o those from higher-income households watch local and national news shows on television, 51% of this higher-income group said they get local news from a print version of a newspaper, and 22% read a print version of a newspaper for national news.Still, the online news consumption patterns of this more well-off group stand in stark contrast to those living in the lowest income households.

It’s almost like the last two years have been like a compressed version of the shift that took place for the web from 1995 through 2002. People experimented with brand new companies. Google was tiny. Facebook hadn’t been conceived. Now the game usage is moving from the 5 percent or 10 percent of the population to 50 percent or more. Just look at Angry Birds. These games are passing the time. They’re not competing with $60 games.

Responsible disclosure would normally prevent me from publishing the advisory while there is a chance the users will get a fix in a reasonable time frame. However, despite the speed at which Google has worked to develop a patch I don’t believe this can happen. The reason is that Android OS updates usually rely on OEMs and carriers to provide an update for their devices. Not all OEMs are providing Android OS updates to all of their devices, and the ones that are we have seen are not always doing it in a timely fashion. There may be legitimate reasons for this but the bottom line is there will still be a great deal of devices exposed for quite some time or perhaps forever, including my own.

Better that we know now and have the chance to protect ourselves, or at least understand the risk. I don’t expect to see the exploitation of this issue become widespread, but if you are really worried about it there are a few things you can do to identify it or prevent it [...]

So far scale hasn't really been a decisive factor in the smartphone arena. Innovation is what's making the breakthrough. Both Apple and RIM have significantly innovated in terms of device, business model and communication strategy, winning customer preference through enhanced usage experience but also effective marketing and smart channel management.

In the future the environment might not be as favorable for Apple and RIM as it has been in the recent past. Top line growth will make international sales a higher priority and levels of operator subsidy abroad might be lower on average than those of the North American markets. This might result in growing pressure on the pricing side. Furthermore, competition is likely to increase. The Android pack gets larger every day, HP will re-launch webOS , Microsoft might at last gain traction thanks to Windows Phone 7 and Nokia should be expected to bounce back at some stage.

A greater number of high-end device sales also raises the average selling price and profit margins for handsets. Nokia doesn’t enjoy the roughly $600 ASP that Apple does, but Nokia’s ASP did increase in the quarter to €65 (US $91) as compared to €61 in the prior quarter and €64 from the year ago period. You don’t need an accounting degree to understand that selling more devices at a higher price brings increases in revenue.
