Why the Linux console has sixteen colors (SeaGL)
At the 2018 Seattle GNU/Linux Conference after-party, I gave a lightning talk about why the Linux console has only sixteen colors. Lightning talks are short, fun topics. I enjoyed giving the lightning talk, and the audience seemed into it, too. So I thought I'd share my lightning talk here. These are my slides in PNG format, with notes added.

Difference between mod_alias and mod_rewrite
Most of the redirect techniques provided in my stupid .htaccess tricks article all use Apache’s alias module, mod_alias. You can also use mod_rewrite to redirect URLs. The main difference is that, with mod_alias, the server is responding to the client request with a redirect, so the client immediately is sent to the new location. Conversely, with mod_rewrite, the server simply returns the new content, so the client is not actually redirected anywhere.

[How To] Change Computer Name in Ubuntu 11.10
The hostname of the Ubuntu install on my netbook reads more like a barcode than a ‘computer name’. This is largely my own fault; the Ubuntu installer lets you set a custom ‘computer name’ during set-up. For the most part we have very little reason to remember our computer names; indeed, my reason for changing mine is purely for aesthetic reasons. Thankfully changing computer name in Ubuntu 11.10 is simple enough.

Setting Up An Amahi Home Server – Adding a Drive To Your Server [Linux]
Last week, I introduced you to the Amahi home server and talked about why you might want to set up a home server at all and all the great things it could do on your network. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to go into some of the advanced setup and additional features, so let’s take a look at those today. Specifically, we’ll be adding a drive or two into the server, and changing the horrible default theme. Warning: There is a tiny bit of command line work involved, but I’ve simplified things and found a GUI alternative wherever possible.

How To Set Up A Home Server With Amahi [Linux]
For a number of years now I’ve been running Microsoft Windows Home Server on a spare machine I had, as it’s a great way to use up all the spare hard drives that I find lying around the house. It has served me well as a networked storage device and streaming media server, as well as providing me with automated nightly back-ups (of my Windows systems at least). However, the Home Server team recently announced that they would not be including the disk pooling technology in the next release, so I’ve been looking for an alternative. Amahi Home Server - a Linux based solution – might just be the answer.

SyncEvolution synchronizes personal information management (PIM) data such as contacts, appointments, tasks and memos using the Synthesis sync engine, which provides support for the SyncML synchronization protocol. SyncEvolution synchronizes with SyncML servers over HTTP and with SyncML capable phones locally over Bluetooth (new in 1.0). Plugins provide access to the data which is to be synchronized.

Binaries are available for Linux desktops (synchronizing data in GNOME Evolution, with KDE supported indirectly already and Akonadi support in development), for MeeGo (formerly Moblin) and for Maemo 5/Nokia N900. The source code can be compiled for Unix-like systems and provides a framework to build custom SyncML clients or servers.

Graphics from the command line
There's nothing quite like command-line tools for handling large batches of tasks, and image manipulations are no exception. Web developers and administrators will appreciate the ability to handle large numbers of files easily, either at the command line or in scripts. Programmer Michael Still presents the ImageMagick suite, a Linux toolkit for sizing, rotating, converting, and otherwise manipulating images, in a huge number of formats, whether one or a hundred at a time.
