Archive of Our Own and the Gift Culture of Fanfiction by Olivia Rile
My work here is to study the fannish gift culture, investigating its current state, value, and usage. How does it relate to the concepts of gender and community? How has it been shaped by the Internet, capitalism, and evolving fan culture? In this paper I will endeavor to address these questions. I will begin with a literature review focusing on fanfiction and its relation to gender, community, and the gift culture, and then move into my own analysis, studying the fannish gift culture as it is embodied in the fanfiction site Archive of Our Own.

Slash shock, shamelessness, and a rec.
So, remember slash shock? That weird feeling you got when you read that first story about Frodo and Sam, or Kirk and Spock, doing... things.. to each other, that feeling compounded of equal parts This is strange and wrong and dirty and This makes so. much. sense and more more more more more?

An Archive Of One's Own
That said, the people behind fanlib (talked about many places, see astridv here) don't actually care about fanfic, the fanfic community, or anything except making money off content created entirely by other people and getting media attention. They don't have a single fanfic reader or writer on their board; they don't even have a single woman on their board. They're creating a lawsuit-bait site while being bad potential defendants, and they deserve to be chased out being pelted with rocks.

why OTW!
So the big underlying reason I wanted to talk about is that actually, I do take fandom seriously. The thing is, I live here. Most of my closest friends, people I hang out with both in chat and real life on a regular basis, are people I've met through fandom. I wouldn't have my current career without fandom, and I wouldn't be nearly as happy and creatively fulfilled. I care about and feel connected to a vast network of other fans. Not that everyone in fandom is all BFF or anything, just that there's a community here that we're a part of, and it's a community I love.

Queer Advocacy and Slash Fandom: Then and Now
Most advocates for queer rights would agree that we suffer from a lack of positive representation in the media, and that prejudices within the media both reflect, and contribute to prejudices in society at large.

In order for people to hold prejudice against queerness they must first believe that queerness is abnormal/wrong/bad. In order for people to believe that, they must first assume that straightness is normal/right/good.

This bias, otherwise known as heteronormativity, is the foundation on which queer oppression is built.Homophobia and biphobia and and transphobia are all products of heteronormativity.

Therefore, when I argue for better queer representation in the media, I am fighting not merely for a greater quantity of queer representation. I am fighting mainstream media’s heteronormative and totally inaccurate conception of what constitutes/qualifies as queer.

OTW Legal Staffers Participate in SDCC "Fandom is My Fandom" Panel
The panel discussed how fandom has changed now that fanworks are in the spotlight on social media and mainstream news and are being acknowledged by the companies that create and distribute source material. The panelists reflected on how advances in technology and improved understanding in copyright law, particularly in the area of fair use, have increased fandom's public reach and placed fanworks into the public consciousness.

Deleted fic lost and found archive
A while back, I posted a controversial question. Should deleted fic/fic from deleted journals be fair game? As in, if you have it, should it be ok to distribute? There were a lot of heated debates (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) over the issue. Many opinions were posted about permissions, lack of disclaimers, authors not saying their wishes, what if you can't contact the author, legal issues, why the fic was deleted, why the journal was deleted and so on.

I have an idea and I want to see what people think. I'd like to create some kind of lost and found fic community. In the comm, the format would be like any fic comm where you'd post as if you're submitting fic, tagged by fandom, and people comment if they want it sent to them. There would be rules. Rules against posting a fic where you KNOW the author doesn't want it posted, etc but that's not what I'm polling about. Nor am I getting into what 'know' means. I'm polling to see if the interest for the comm is there.

Fan Labor and Feminism: Capitalizing on the Fannish Labor of Love
I
n the early 2000s, my three-year-old son wanted a
Doctor Who
birth-
day party. He had been watching old 1980s-era PBS recordings on
our VHS, and he couldn’t understand why the party stores didn’t
have the Fourth Doctor next to Buzz Lightyear and Arthur para-
phernalia. Now, ten years later, when I research fannish cakes, I fi nd
entire commercial cooking programs dedicated to baking a TARDIS-
shaped cake, along with
Doctor Who
party- and bakeware. One reason
for this change is clearly the resurgence of the
Doctor Who
franchise
(BBC, 1963–1989, 1996, 2005–) and its wider popularity than before.
Clearly, this amount of fan merchandise for even marginal shows is
a recent phenomenon, testifying to both the expansion of media tie-
in commercialization and the increased popularity of fan and geek
cultures. Twenty years ago, our
Doctor Who
mugs were a special PBS
fund-raising gift; today, there is merchandise available not only for the
most niche shows but also for specifi c fans: if you want a T-shirt, tote
bag, or iPhone case dedicated to Superwholock (the slashy Doctor
Who / Supernatural / Sherlock crossover of “Hunters and Doctors
and Boys from Baker Street”), there are dozens of designs and options
available on sites that cater directly to this audience.

Why Is It So Hard To Talk About Fanfiction?
There has been yet another disastrous attempt to capitalize on fanfiction’s increasing visibility because apparently it’s hilarious to make fun of someone’s hobby. An event called “Fanfic Theater with Chris Gore” was announced as part of WonderCon’s schedule and it’s as bad as it sounds; basically the plan was for a bunch of comedians and TV personalities to do a live read of “the weirdest and wildest” fanfiction on the Internet, which is basically just public bullying under the guise of humor. The event has since been cancelled due to the understandable uproar from the fanfiction community, but it’s not the first time fanfiction has been exploited in this way. In fact, it seems to be happening more and more. We could just wait for it to happen again, or we can ask ourselves why people keep talking about fanfiction like this, and how we can change the conversation.

A guide to fanfiction for people who can't stop getting it wrong
What is fanfiction? That’s the question magazine articles and TV segments have been attempting to answer for upwards of 40 years now, usually without doing much actual research into the topic.

Maybe this was a valid question back when folks were still sliding Kirk/Spock zines under the tables at Star Trek conventions, but in the era of Fifty Shades of Grey (look, we had to namecheck it at some point) and Amazon’s licensed, for-profit fanfic publishing service, you’d think that fanfic explainer articles would be on the way out.

Before the mass media, people actively engaged with culture through storytelling and expanding well-known tales. Modern fan culture connects to this historical tradition, and has become a force that challenges social norms and accepted behavior. "Fannish" behavior has become its own grassroots way of altering our society and culture, and a means of actively experiencing one's own culture.

Science, y'all
So, over 9 polls, in a variety of slash subfandoms from the late-teens yaoi set to the mid-thirties meta fans set, dates ranging over 7 years. Only onetwo polls had less than 50% queer participants, and that wasone of them the earliest one, and even they were at 37% and 47%. The median percent of queer participants was 59.7%, and the mean was 61.5% 60.8%.

SO when people say things like "slash fans are appropriating queer experience", what THE MAJORITY OF SLASHERS, WHO IDENTIFY AS QUEER hear is either "you aren't queer enough, your queer identity isn't real" or "male voices are the only ones qualified to speak for the queer community."

I think the question of how queer women can appropriate queer men's identity, and the damage that can be done when gay men speaking about themselves are drowned out by women, are valid discussion topics, and worth addressing. That is not a conversation that is going to happen as long as THE MAJORITY OF SLASHERS, WHO IDENTIFY AS QUEER, are being erased from the discussion. fyi.

And SO when people say things like "slash is a legitimate way for straight women to express their sexuality", what THE MAJORITY OF SLASHERS, WHO IDENTIFY AS QUEER hear is either "you aren't queer enough, your queer identity isn't relevant" or "straight voices are the only ones qualified to speak for the slash community".

I think the question of how straight women's sexuality interacts with queer sexuality, and the ways straight women's sexuality defines slash, are valid discussion topics, and worth addressing. That is not a conversation that is going to happen as long as THE MAJORITY OF SLASHERS, WHO IDENTIFY AS QUEER, are being erased from the discussion. fyi.

Can I say that one more time? I like saying it. Science makes me happy.

THE MAJORITY OF SLASHERS IDENTIFY AS QUEER.

A List of Published Fiction Containing Illegal Sexual Activities
The purpose of this list of illegal sex acts in published fiction is to provide a starting point for thinking aout the representation of transgressive sex in literature -- and how to integrate fanfic into those discussions. Fandom is an *artistic community*, and we need to tie issues of fanfiction into those of broader literary and artistic concerns, which will be of paramount importance in making our case: this not simply about suppressing a bunch of Harry Potter perverts, but cuts at the very heart of our concepts of literary and artistic freedom.

I've seen a few "You kids get back on my lawn!" type posts decrying Tumblr as a fannish platform. I empathize. Personally, I really dislike Twitter; I find it a really uncomfortable medium, and the fact that some fannish conversations are conducted primarily via Twitter is baffling to me. But I know people who love it! Different strokes, etc.

I've been using Tumblr extensively for the past year and a half and enjoying it a lot, so I thought I'd talk a little about why it's not Satan's own platform.

thingswithwings | definitions of art make my skin crawl.
RT : thingswithwings says all the things I think about vidding and our god awful copyright laws:

Right now a thing that is happening is that the OTW is fighting for DMCA exemptions for vidders, especially the right to break DRM on copyrighted materials. This is an important part of the fight against DMCA in general and the fight for remix culture, fair use, and new art forms as well. The lawmakers already came back with a statement that they're just not sure why vidders would need digital footage (ie, why not use low-quality footage taken from the internets, rather than breaking DRM on a DVD or blueray disc or iTunes download?) and stating that they didn't feel one of the vids presented, in particular, had its own narrative/message - in other words, that it didn't make the cut in terms of showing sufficient "originality." Originality is a big fucking deal in American copyright law.

Robin Hobb's Home: The Fanfiction Rant
I am not rational on the topic of fan fiction. Well, actually, I can be, and in this essay, I will endeavor to be. But people who know me well also know that this is one topic that can make my eyes spin round like pinwheels and steam come out of my ears. In fact, I would venture to say that knowing this brings them great delight in provoking such a show several times a year when the topic comes up at a convention or in a discussion group.
So, rather than continue to publicly rant, unreeling endlessly my venomous diatribe against fan fiction, I thought I’d gather my bile and spill it all here, in a logical and organized flow. Hereafter, I shall simply refer those who query to the infamous red shoe gripped by the mad woman in the attic.
