Is The Star-Spangled Banner racist?
What Francis Scott Key wrote about so contemptuously in his heroic poem, which was only later put to music, was not black sailors who may have come from America, or from the West Indies, or indeed from other current or former slave-holding countries.  Instead, Key reflected the common American conceit that this latter-day generation's British soldiers in 1812 – many of whom were indeed from the European Continent, as well as from a variety of other non-British nationalities – were in fact another levy of press-ganged mercenaries, not at all different from the contemptible Hessian "hireling and slave" of the Revolutionary War era.

Army Ranger Vet Tells Colin Kaepernick What He Should Be Doing Instead of Sitting Out Nat’l Anthem
“To disrespect the country that has afforded him the opportunities and fortunes he acquired is only made more offensive by the fact that his life is the personification of the ideals I see in the American flag and National Anthem: a biracial child, raised by white parents, and who has accomplished much despite his “oppression.” In how many more nations around the world can a story like that come to fruition?

Tribal Desire, Bryan Caplan | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
Am I projecting my freakish individualism onto all mankind? Ponder this: How far would government revenue fall if Americans' tax bill were a voluntary recommendation rather than a legal obligation? Sure, a few libertarians would conscientiously refuse to pay because they "love their country but fear their government." But most Americans have no doubt that government spending on pensions, education, health care, military, etc. is good for their country. If they were sincere patriots, they'd happily pony up for the perceived common good. But it's hard to imagine that government revenues wouldn't plummet - especially a few years into the great voluntary tax experiment. Of course, if the true patriots of America want to prove me wrong by giving my experiment a try, they have my full support.

By "citizenism," I mean that I believe Americans should be biased in favor of the welfare of our current fellow citizens over that of the six billion foreigners.

Bars Versus Churches at Steven Landsburg | The Big Questions: Tackling the Problems of Philosophy with Ideas from Mathematics, Economics, and Physics
"The most promiscuous men are those who have paid for sex, been threatened with a gun, support abortion rights and know people with AIDS. The least promiscuous are those who spend time at church and report high satisfaction from family life. The most promiscuous women are those who have been punched, believe homosexuality is not wrong, and spend time in bars. The least promiscuous women are those who are patriotic and spend time in church. Here are the details. You tell me what you make of them."

Obvious Stuff I Agree With, Bryan Caplan | EconLog | Library of Economics and Liberty
"In other words, just because an individual--or many individuals--would not want act X to occur on their property does not mean that, according to libertarian law, it can be prohibited as a general principle, even on so-called "public property.""

"To love a place because of its general features implies that love may wane or disappear as the manifestation of those valued qualities change. But Patriotism, the love of country, is particularistic".
