Yglesias » The Decline of Private Health Insurance
This decline in private health insurance coverage has, however, been entirely offset by an increase in the number of working age people on Medicaid, which stood at 13 percent in 2008. Among the under-18 set, private insurance is even rarer and public coverage even more common, since children are both poorer-than-average and politically easier to cover. In terms of causation, my understanding is that this is a blend of Medicaid “crowding out” private coverage and Medicaid filling a gap in private insurance’s affordability. The Affordable Care Act is going to continue this trend by substantially expanding Medicaid coverage.

Stop Punking the Middle Class | FrumForum
What I do disagree with is the contention that the middle class is in crisis. And I think that it’s bad to believe (and assert for mass audiences) that that’s true because it hurts consumer sentiment, prolonging high unemployment, and diverts attention from the truly disadvantaged who really are in crisis. Mike can say that that pits me against the middle class (his post was titled, “Scott Winship versus the Middle Class”), but then let me ask Mike and others who would disagree with me a simple question: Why do you think Americans are deluded about their economic conditions, since in June, 7 in 10 American adults said their “current household financial situation” is better than “most” Americans’ (Q.25, disclosure: the poll was commissioned by my old employer)? Why are you against the middle class?

Petraeus Pushes Back on Afghan Deadline | FrumForum
"Petraeus’ answer in short: Yes it is, and yes we can. However, success will take time; success will not be gauged or demonstrated by traditional measures of military progress; and Afghanistan will not be transformed into a Western-style industrial democracy.

But Afghanistan can be stabilized; it can cease to be a staging ground for terrorists and terrorist networks; and it can become a more or less peaceful country, with a more representative and democratic government."

Just How Bad is the Recession? | FrumForum
"This approach makes clear why people were disappointed by the “jobless” recoveries from the recessions of the early 1990s and 2000s, which were no faster than after the much more severe recession of the early 1970s (though of course, the declines in employment were much smaller to begin with). More to the point, it also shows that while the current recession still looks bad, bad, bad, the decline in employment is comparable to the decline during the double-dip recession, which is apparent from the “1980″ line. That’s not the most fantastic news of course, but it’s worth noting. Unfortunately, I doubt this is the chart you’ll see others use and update as things evolve in the next few months".

No Surprises in UN’s Biased Flotilla Report | FrumForum
"Following the release of the UNHRC report, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “in view of the biased, politicized and extremist approach of the same Human Rights Council that initiated the skewed Goldstone Report, Israel sees no reason to cooperate with this commission.” In light of the outcome of the Commission’s findings, it is easy to understand why. Notwithstanding, Israel is however cooperating with a separate UN enquiry established by UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon and headed by New Zealand’s former Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer. This commission has yet to finalize and publish its findings."

Thank God for Hitchens | FrumForum
"Hitchens is a man of ideas, the greatest of which is an unshakable antipathy for totalitarianism in all its forms, especially those stemming from the followers of the heavenly Dear Leader of Abrahamic faith. In some ways, it’s a shame that Hitchens was not born a generation or two earlier in order to have the opportunity, like his hero George Orwell, to fight the twentieth century’s greatest monsters at the peak of their power. Of course, I’m still plenty glad that the world has him now. So when all anyone can bother to ask the star correspondent to the land of malady about is whether the old canard about atheists and foxholes is true, I start to feel as the though the world is wasting whatever supply may be left of the thoughts of an irreplaceable mind."

Why I Can’t Celebrate the Prop 8 Decision | FrumForum
"The judge — who is gay and should have recused himself — justified his ruling in part by noting that no “demonstrated harm as a result” of same-sex marriage could be shown, which could have made blocking it justified. This is undoubtedly true but also astonishingly irrelevant. The law could conceivably require that everyone wear a wizard’s hat every Saturday at 6 PM; the point is not that it is “good” or can be demonstrated to be “harmful,” but whether it violates any existing protections."

The GOP’s Immigration Reform Meltdown | FrumForum
"Having Latino voters care this much about this issue is a very, very new thing. In the past, concerns over immigration policy tended to lag far behind education, the economy, healthcare… etc. That it is number one now reveals just how besieged Latinos feel. Latinos are an enormous voting block and they are getting bigger. Now they feel threatened. If Republicans don’t at the very least moderate their rhetoric on this issue, even candidates that don’t take a hard line — say like Meg Whitman in California — will see enormous numbers of Latino votes that could have been theirs vote for the other side simply because Latinos perceive the Republican Party to be hostile to Hispanics. If Latinos think that the Republican position is to deport all illegals and never let them back into the country, then expect legal Hispanics to deport Republicans to the political wilderness for many, many moons."

Nudging Voters Towards the Center | FrumForum
"For example, you could have a district that’s 60% in favor or party A, but then in the primary there could be 5 candidates from party A and only 1 each of parties B and C (because the candidates from those parties did a better job of coordination and picked just one candidate). The resulting general election–a matchup between the two leading vote-getters in the primary–could then be B vs. C, which doesn’t seem quite right."

Remembering Robert Byrd’s Racism | FrumForum
"We’re told that he recanted his views. Great. So did Strom Thurmond. But those words — just words — rightly got him nowhere. If Robert Byrd’s grandson runs for Congress and is defeated by a black candidate — as happened to Thurmond’s grandon in South Carolina last week in a Republican primary — will the media breathlessly report it as the end of a racist era in the Democratic Party’s sordid history, as they did of Tim Scott’s overwhelming victory?"

Why Do Feminists Hate Palin? | FrumForum
"I can’t say that I’m a fan of Sarah Palin, but if she doesn’t embody everything that feminism ought to stand for, then what we have on our hands is a manipulative language game. She “has it all”: a college degree, a family, a high-profile career, and a history of taking on powerful, entrenched men in established institutions — and winning. The presidential race of 2008 exposed feminist ideology for the charade that it is. What a riot that Hillary Clinton, who rose to power on her cheating husband’s coattails, was hailed as a feminist hero — while Sarah Palin, a self-made woman, was spat upon!"

Learning from Romneycare’s Failures | FrumForum
"Where did Romneycare go wrong? It first failed to deal with the fact that anyone who suddenly finds himself entitled to more healthcare will make the most of it provided that they never have to face the cost of it. Romney also chose to ignore the single largest distortion in healthcare, the tax exemption for group health insurance that gives preference to employee based insurance. Removing this distortion would remove a significant amount of waste in the system."

The GOP’s Growing Hispanic Rift | FrumForum
"The core values of the Republican party could profoundly appeal to Latinos. The party firmly grounds itself in the strength of family, the importance of hard work and personal responsibility, and the virtues of limited government, yet, it has pushed away millions who have sacrificed all, putting their families on their backs, to take advantage of the economic opportunity in the United States, to work incredibly hard and do the jobs that others will not do, just to secure the American dream for themselves and their families."
