“We Could Compromise and Paint Them Green” - JPG
This is one of the last cartoons that Herblock produced in his seventy-two-year career as an editorial cartoonist. He reacted to a House vote to permit oil drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. In preparing for the vote, Representative Tom DeLay of Texas said, “We feel very, very confident we will be able to crack the backs of radical environmentalists.” The Senate refused to pass the measure.

"It's the speak-loudly-and-poke-'em- with-a-big-stick policy" - JPG
This is the last cartoon Herblock drew in his remarkable career. Drawn in August, 2001, he criticizes what he perceives as U.S. President George W. Bush's tendency toward unilateralism in American foreign policy. His satirical swipe alludes to President Theodore Roosevelt's appropriation of an African proverb to describe his approach toward foreign relations: "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

"He thought it would be a nice addition" - JPG
Herblock saw the separation of church and state as a fundamental principle of American democracy. In February, 2001, this imaginative rendering of the executive residence expressed his displeasure at U.S. President George W. Bush's creation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

“Drill the Wilderness! This Is An Energy Crisis!” - JPG
Herblock satirically points out that the American love affair with the SUV necessitated drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Bush Administration made oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge an issue during the 2000 presidential election campaign. Although proposed legislation to allow drilling died on the Senate floor in 2001, by 2003 Congress had approved it. Bush and Republican legislators linked Alaskan oil with energy independence from the Middle East, especially after September 11, 2001.
