Some sorts of problems produce an embarrassment of riches. e.g. Bell Labs basically invented half of modern computing. I think it's down to the structure of the problem they faced, and there are plenty more problems like it.

I believe the ocean’s surface has a slightly ellipsoidal shape when viewed over the whole earth, and is elongated in the direction of the moon and sun (I guess the effects combine ~additively?). over the course of a day the earth rotates while the ellipsoid’s shape remains ~fixed

It occurs to me that an even easier variant of this is to ask "How long will it typically take?" and then multiply that answer by three.

This corresponds to B = 10A (i.e. if things go badly it might take up to 10 times as long as the typical case), which seems pretty common.
