The Definitive Guide To Affiliate Marketing
The Definitive Guide To Affiliate Marketing
~ R. L. Adams (Forbes)
Review Article [Published: May 25, 2017]

Synopsis

R. L. Adams reports on an interview with Dan Henry, successful internet entrepreneur and affiliate marketer. This article takes us through Dan Henry's early days as a blogger who came up with a marketable idea, experienced some ups and downs along the road to success, and eventually rose from being a college dropout and a pizza delivery boy to becoming an affiliate marketing entrepreneur.

The Dream

The rise of the internet has dangled some tantalizing promises of prosperity to people from all walks of life, but how can we harness this potential in a realistic fashion? Forbes writer R. L Adams relates the success story of affiliate marketing guru Dan Henry. with some sound advice for newcomers to marketing on the web.

The Seed of an Idea

After finding a way to quit his smoking habit, Henry started blogging about how he overcame his addiction, even though he knew nothing about affiliate marketing at the time. His "story was [so] powerful [...] and the way he related his experiences on his blog resonated with others, " says Adams (2017). People were so eager to hear his story they "swarmed to his site and Henry knew he was onto something."

Making the Dream a Reality

Henry began reviewing many brands of electronic cigarettes (the device that helped him give up smoking), until eventually V2 Cigs made him an offer "of their affiliate program where they paid out 50% commissions." That was the catalyst that launched Henry into getting serious about affiliate marketing. Henry's passive income exploded and he could hardly believe his success.

Challenges: Highs and Lows

Henry's early success was not long lived when Google updated their SEO ranking algorithms; then Henry's ranking and audience share crash-dived to the bottom of the dark depths of the ocean.

To his credit, Henry did not sit around licking his wounds for long. Having been wise with his previous good fortune, he bought up a defunct nightclub to renovate the place and give it a new lease of life. Henry fixed the place up and, by applying his web marketing expertise, got it running again as a viable business proposition, then sold the nightclub for a handsome profit.

To this day, Henry is a highly regarded web marketer who has branched out into many other aspects of marketing online besides writing affiliate marketing blog, such as; designing sales funnels, writing promotional copyright, and delivering courses and speeches to help other would-be web marketers along their journeys.

Definition: The word sales funnel is just a technical word to describe the buying process. You can think about it as any ordinary funnel. At the top, you would pour in a lot of liquid or oil or whatever else you're deciding to funnel down. As you pour, it filters a large amount of whatever it is that you're pouring in, into a defined space.
- Quoted from the R. L Adams (Forbes) article (2017)

Psychology: Types of Buyers

According to R. L. Adams (2017), "One of the most important things that I learned by talking to Henry is that there are two types of buyers in this world:

Logical buyers: These buyers base all their decision on cold-hard facts and suffer from something called analysis paralysis. They over-analyze and over-judge every single thing. They base their purchasing decisions on data because they don't believe in you, so they don't give their heart and their souls to you.

Emotional buyers: When someone buys a product or service based on their emotions, they believe in it. When people become emotionally invested in you, it enables you able to build a massive tribe. These are the best types of buyers because your story resonates with them and they become firm believers in you no matter what you have to sell."

Method: Eight Steps to Success

Step 1: Develop your story
Step 2: Create Your Diversified Platform
Step 3: Develop and Nurture Your Audience
Step 4: Search for a Relevant Product of Company to Promote
Step 5: Survey Your List
Step 6: Search for Related Networks
Step 7: Deliver Massive Value
Step 8: Promote Your Affiliate Links

Conclusion

Finally, I recommend you take a look at the this video link, which is embedded in this article anyway: How to Make Affiliate Commissions NOW... Without Having to Create a Ton of Content - YouTube. This is a 6 minute (Approx.) video where Dan Henry teaches you how to get started in affiliate marketing with only one product and very little content. He even throws in a free document version of this method and a free sample sales funnel. This is possibly the best introduction a beginner can get without having to pay a cent for the advice or the product. The downloadable offer is at: dnahenry.org.shortcut and this link does come up at the end of the video.

This one page summary speaks for itself, so I'm not going to do all the work for you. Please click on the title at the top of this page to read the full article, which explains the eight steps more thoroughly and offers plenty of definitions of terms to assist those who are new to the topic of affiliate marketing. Then you can compare with my summary notes and evaluate the information yourself.

Pinboard - Never Lose Bookmarks Again - Ask Leo!
Article by Leo Notonboom as Ask Leo on 'Making Technology Work for Everyone' online newsletter. Posted: June 2017.

Some practical advice on how to use 'bookmarklets' from your browser to save your favourite content links to Pinboard.

Bookmarklets sit in the bookmarks bar of your browser and, when clicked, they open a small window for you to enter the information you wish to save. The Pinboard bookmarklets replace the old Delicious add-on we used to have on our browsers.

To add these bookmarklets to your browser, first go to your settings and make sure the browser bar is ticked as 'visible'. Then go to URL https://pinboard.in/howto/ and look at Topic 2. Saving Bookmarks. You should now be able to see the highlighted options. Click and drag them into the bookmarks bar at the top of the browser. Then return to the "Ask Leo article" and read all the other helpful tips.

Suggestion: You don't have to clutter up your bookmarks bar with every single bookmarklet. For instance, I find the most useful options to be 'popup', 'popup with tags', 'my pinboard', and "read later". Certainly, you can try them all out at first, and then consider dropping the ones you don't need. These functions can always be found anyway from within Pinboard. This is why 'my pinboard' is a useful shortcut for getting into your page. 'Popup', with or without tags, is good because they help you mark, tag and save your content while you are still on the webpage that interests you. Anything else can be edited later from inside of the Pinboard page.

Have fun with bookmarking!

Pinboard Bookmarking Review - Part 2
Part 2 of a 2 part YouTube video by Rhinofeed
Published May 17, 2011

Demonstrates how to use this social bookmarking application since Delicious went out of business and it was taken over by Maciej Cegłowski, owner of Pinboard, on June 15, 2003.

Fans of the old Delicious brand have been concerned and apprehensive about their favourite social bookmarking application that they have enjoyed since the days of Web 2. The acquisition of Delicious by entrepeneur Maciej Cegłowski and subsequent rebranding to Pinboard is an attempt to give the waning fortunes of Delicious a new lease of life; however it now costs a modest fee of $11 p.a. for the basic package and an extra $14 p.a. for an upgraded archival account, totalling $25 per year. Some folks may grumble but this move will ensure the survival of a web application that, in my opinion, is too good to lose.

There are many newer social bookmarking sites the market in 2017, some good, some bad, but the simplicity of Pinboard (ex-Delicious) makes it a remarkably fast response application. It has many on-board tools that make cataloging and organising your work a breeze, with clean page design and no unnecessary graphics to slow it down.
