If you can find Coke-a-Cola in the world's poorest villages, why not life-saving medicine? - The Solutions Journal
Mutinta’s five-month-old daughter has diarrhea. In developed nations, a stomach complaint like that might be a mere nuisance. However, in Zambia’s vast countryside—without electricity, water, soap, and medicine—diarrhea is a matter of life and death. Here, over 11,000 children die of diarrhea each year, while across the world there are 700,000 diarrhea-related deaths annually. Malnutrition, made worse by diarrhea, contributes to 45 percent of all child deaths and causes many more children to fail to reach their full mental and physical potential.

How Coca-Cola can save the world. | tomcfell
Particularly during the last few decades, the soft drinks manufacturing company Coca-Cola has found itself embroiled in countless cases of egregious offences; stealing water, poisoning land and selling drinks laced with dangerous pesticides (Stecklow; p1, 2005) to name a few.

Innovations in Health: For Africa, From Africa | GBCHealth
Traveling in almost any remote region of the world you will undoubtedly stumble across three things: Coca-Cola, cigarettes and beer. Leveraging these distribution systems to deliver high quality health and wellness products presents an opportunity to reach communities that continue to suffer from the highest burden of preventable disease. In 2012, ColaLife, a UK-based charity, partnered with local bottling plants and shopkeepers to transport antidiarrheal kits to the remote areas of Zambia by packaging them in the empty space in Coca-Cola crates–a simple yet innovative solution to addressing the challenge of diarrhea.

Acting High Commissioner speech at the anti-diarrhoea kit launch - News articles - GOV.UK
I am delighted that we are all here today to launch the Kit Yamoyo in Shoprite stores throughout the country. Kit Yamoyo – the ‘Kit of Life’ - is an anti-diarrhoea kit, which was developed and tested in Zambia by ColaLife – a small UK NGO - with the help of funding from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). So it is appropriate that we celebrate this next big step in Kit Yamoyo’s life here at the British High Commission. I think tonight’s event is also a celebration of Simon and his wife Jane’s hard work and persistence, and of the long partnership between ColaLife and DFID.

So how about a cure for diarrhea – the leading killer of children in Africa under the age of five? Although the cure already exists, there are significant obstacles in getting that medicine to hundreds of rural African villages. And yet what is delivered to these villages almost without fail? Coca Cola! So if you could simply place the small medicine packs in cases of Coke, it would get there, right? And it did. This remarkable video captures that journey.

Joint first prize winner, ColaLife Zambia, won its award for its innovative ‘Kit Yamoyo’ (‘Kit of Life’), which brings affordable diarrhoea treatment to families in remote rural areas using the supply and distribution networks normally used to transport soft drinks. Diarrhoea is one of the world’s biggest killers of children under five. It can be simply treated using oral rehydration salts (ORS) and Zinc, yet less than one per cent of children in sub-Saharan Africa receive the treatment. In Zambia, ColaLife found that many parents were unaware of the correct treatment for diarrhoea and that suitable treatment options were not widely available.

Be More Innovative in Business - The Muse
Suddenly, your world just explodes! Is there someone out there with distribution, audience, or resources you could utilize? In 2008, for example, ColaLife had the idea to bring life-saving medicines to parts of Africa. It just lacked the distribution. So, the company identified Coca-Cola as a partner with all the distribution it could ever hope for; and went after them. Armed with a 10,000 follower-strong social media campaign, ColaLife convinced Coca-Cola to let it hijack its distribution chain.

Lifting when we fall – on disclosure and reflection in research | The Research Companion
One venture, ColaLife, decided to take this idea one stage further and developed ‘aid pods’- anti-diarrhea kits – that would fit into the crates used to deliver coke. Piloting began with community involvement in Zambia and moved to trial whether distributing the pods via Coca Cola crates would work. The idea of using an existing trade network to distribute vital medical aid is excellent. However, partnering with a commercial company and particularly one with a problematic reputation certainly does raise questions. Nevertheless as a pragmatic solution it is certainly worth exploring.

The Next Frontier for Social Impact Investment | Nick Stanhope
There is much more work to be done on identifying and codifying socially progressive consumer product development - and not the ones that "make life more convenient for the already comfortable" or package up superficial solutions to win market share - but the ones that profoundly affect social, health and environmental problems in challenging markets, like d.light and Kit Yamoyo. But, from what we already know, it is clear that one of the major reasons why consumer product development is such an untapped source of intervention is that it doesn't align well with existing forms of investment.

Simon Berry was among the many who marveled at the prevalence of Coca-Cola in even the most remote corners of the globe, and for 20 years he dreamed of delivering life-saving medicine through the Coca-Cola system. The idea was a nonstarter, however, until social media flexed its muscles. In 2008, Berry launched a Facebook page for his dream, ColaLife, to prevent children’s deaths from diarrhea. Two years later the group had 8,000 supporters, and that caught the attention of the mainstream media and Coca-Cola. Next came funding partners and a “locally-determined” ColaLife trial in Zambia that continues today. There’s even a decorated documentary, “The Cola Road,” by Claire Ward (see the trailer below).

“That’s been around for 30 years, but the key has been: How do you get it out to the community, to the mothers and fathers who need it?” said Batson. An NGO called Cola Life, created Kit Yamoyo, a specially shaped plastic container of rehydration salts and zinc that can fit inside a crate of soft drinks. Through Coca-Cola’s supply chain, the ORS treatment now reaches families in need. “It’s about building on distribution networks, so we’re not just delivering a sugar soda, we’re delivering a life-saving intervention.”
