Old Town Road - Wikipedia
"Old Town Road" (also known as "Old Town Road (I Got the Horses in the Back)") is a song by American rapper Lil Nas X. It was initially released independently on December 3, 2018, and gained popularity on social video sharing app TikTok. As a result, Lil Nas X was signed to Columbia Records, which now distributes the single. A remix of the song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus was released on April 5, 2019, and another remix featuring Young Thug is in the works.[1][2]

In March 2019, the song reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart before the magazine disqualified it from being included on the chart on grounds that it did not fit the country genre, sparking a debate on the definition of the genre.[3] Had it not been disqualified, "Old Town Road" would have been the Hot Country Songs number-one song, as of the chart dated April 6, 2019.[4]

India: TikTok app blocked |
TikTok has more than 120 million users in India, mostly teenagers, but has faced criticism for hosting inappropriate content. The app allows users to post short videos of themselves performing activities such as lip-syncing and dancing to their favourite songs.  The app is already banned in Bangladesh and has been fined in the US for illegally collecting information on children.

TikTok downloads ordered to be blocked on iOS and Android in India over porn and other illegal content
Today, the country’s main digital communications regulator, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, ordered both Apple and Google to remove the app from its app stores, per a request from High Court in Madras after the latter investigated and determined that the app — which has hundreds of millions of users, including minors — was encouraging pornography and other illicit content. (A source in India, however, tells us that the app is still available in both stores currently.) This is the second time in two months that TikTok’s content has been dinged by regulators, after the app was fined $5.7 million by the FTC in the US over violating child protection policies.

TikTok and the new value gap as labels demand “hundreds of millions”
It is this exposure > revenue argument that could get the major labels’ backs ups, feeling it is a Groundhog Daying of the value gap debates they have been having with other services for years. We are well used to the public war of words that can erupt between content owners and services as a licensing renewal period approaches and how this can be used as form of negotiation in public. There are many questions here. Is the move to sign up acts via Spotlight a pure promotional play, showing it supports new talent? Or is it a way to do direct deals with acts for lower rates than those the majors are demanding – effectively a form of content acquisition by stealth? But can it continue to grow without a library of licensed tracks made up of the huge international hits the three majors control?

The People Behind ByteDance’s App Factory — The Information
To grow fast in China, apparently, you’ve also got to get big.
ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, the viral short video app that has taken the world’s teenagers by storm, has gone on a massive hiring spree in the past year. Its headcount has roughly doubled to 40,000—more than Facebook, which had 35,600 at Dec. 31—as it has diversified beyond its early success, newsfeed app Toutiao. ByteDance now operates more than 20 apps, including Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, fast-growing social network Helo in India as well as a business messaging app, and apps for online learning, jokes, literature and selfies.

‘Old Town Road’ proves TikTok is a new SoundCloud for artists
“I promoted the song as a meme for months until it caught on to TikTok and it became way bigger,” Hill told Time. “I was pretty familiar with TikTok: I always thought its videos would be ironically hilarious. When I became a trending topic on there, it was a crazy moment for me. A lot of people will try to downplay it, but I saw it as something bigger.” TikTok was crucial to the success of Hill’s “Old Town Road” hit, which now sits at number 15 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart. A hashtag for “#yeehaw” has manifested thousands of videos with more than 67 million plays — the majority of which sample Hill’s song.

Your guide to using TikTok
Much like YouTube and Twitch, TikTok opens onto a page recommending some of the most popular hashtags and creators. The app is filled with people — mostly teenagers — recording themselves dancing to popular songs and editing their videos to often hilarious effect. There are more than 500 million people using the app, and new personalities and trends pop up every day. The homepage isn’t a bad place to start your TikTok journey, but it’s hardly where the fun in TikTok lies. TikTok is filled with communities that are built around specific niches, like gaming and comedy. If you find the ones that you like, you’re going to have a much better time. Here’s your guide to exploring.

Pogo - Living Island - YouTube
Finally found the song that's been stuck in my head all day. Lots of cosplayers on Tiktok use this when they're doing poses. (Also part of a playlist of other songs from Tiktok.)

The Chinese takeover of Indian app ecosystem | FactorDaily
2018 is likely to be remembered as the year when the Chinese took over Indian smartphones. In December 2017, the top 10 mobile apps on Google Playstore looked a lot different than what they look from a year later. The Playstore rankings for India in 2018 have China written all over it. Five out of the top 10 mobile apps in India are Chinese — versus two at the end of 2017.

TikTok grosses $75M from virtual currency sales | Mobile Marketer
Social video app TikTok boosted sales of its virtual currency by about 243% to $5.5 million last month from a year earlier, according to app researcher Sensor Tower. People use the in-app coins to reward their favorite video creators, who can exchange the coins for digital gifts.
TikTok has grossed $75 million from the sale of virtual currency, Sensor Tower estimated. The figure includes global spending through Apple's App Store and Google Play, but not revenue from China's third-party Android stores.
China's iOS users represent about 23% of the total, or approximately $17.3 million, making the country the second-biggest market for in-app spending. U.S. TikTok users have spent about $41.3 million in the app, or 55% of the global total. TikTok sells the digital coins in bundles, such as 100 coins for $0.99 or 500 coins for $4.99.

How TikTok and Spotify could win through location-based marketing
As Foursquare has shown, a business that knows how to capture user data and apply it at the location level has a distinct advantage beyond a company that simply advertises locally on occasion. This is why Spotify is building its own location-based services. For example: Spotify partners with Starbucks to make it possible for Starbucks customers to create customized Spotify playlists depending on what users are listening to at different Starbucks locations. Co-Brand is a great way to drive engagement and build customer loyalty at the location level.
