'Statistical Significance' Is Overused And Often Misleading : Shots - Health News : NPR
Scientists and statisticians are putting forth a bold idea: Ban the very concept of "statistical significance."

We hear that phrase all the time in relation to scientific studies. Critics, who are numerous, say that declaring a result to be statistically significant or not essentially forces complicated questions to be answered as true or false.

Newspapers help to radicalise far right, says UK anti-terror chief | UK news | The Guardian
cited the 2017 terror attack in Finsbury Park in London as an example of where a man was “driven to an act of terror by far-right messaging he found mostly on mainstream media”.
Basu invited national newspaper editors to debate their coverage with “survivors of terrorism and those of us trying to counter it”. He said he hoped the government would deal with the issue of mainstream news outlets amplifying terrorist messaging in its forthcoming proposals on online harms and not just target large social networks such as Facebook and YouTube.

How Machine Learning Can (And Can't) Help Journalists - Global Investigative Journalism Network

One year in, Facebook’s big algorithm change has spurred an angry, Fox News-dominated — and very engaged! — News Feed » Nieman Journalism Lab
NewsWhip shows the effects of the turn toward “meaningful interactions”:

It has pushed up articles on divisive topics like abortion, religion, and guns;

politics rules; and

the “angry” reaction (😡) dominates many pages, with “Fox News driving the most angry reactions of anyone, with nearly double that of anyone else.”

8 Tips on Producing Compelling Investigative Journalism for TV - Global Investigative Journalism Network
We realized that it would be easier to explain this through a comparison. So we started with an object that everybody knows, a bike helmet, and then we made an animation that showed that to get this object into the European market, it must have the European Conformity label, also known as the CE label. And that for implants, it is compulsory to go through notified bodies that give out this label. (Watch the animation in the video, at 15’21”.) This explanation was needed to make our viewers understand how an implant could get inside the market even with a very weak technical dossier.

Is a shorter video length more engaging on Facebook? - NewsWhip
With three years of data to compare, we took a look at how each reaction compared to video length, and as it turns out, there isn’t much of a formula to emulate. People tend to care more about the content and it’s proven through our analysis that if people deem it worth watching, they don’t care how long they have to watch it.

Left (or right) this way: pinpointing change with hedgehog maps – Data and Dragons
The audience has to pull a lot of weight in order to understand a hedgehog map. It’s difficult to judge the length of unaligned line segments! However, the rest of the map is designed to make this task as easy as possible. The arrowheads give an intuitive sense of motion to communicate the direction of change. Left and right have strong associations with political parties in the U.S.

(Big) Data Journalism with Spark and R | Timo Grossenbacher
So basically, the problem boiled down to preprocessing, filtering and searching through a very, very large data set. Some journalists prefer to cooperate with external experts when it comes to such problems. This is understandable, as many lack the time and knowledge to do it on their own. However, I think that tackling such problems wholly inside newsrooms has one tremendous benefit: You completely control what is done with the data, and you know exactly what can be interpreted into it – and what not.

Inside 100 million police traffic stops: New evidence of racial bias
Now, Stanford University researchers have compiled the most comprehensive evidence to date suggesting there is a pattern of racial disparities in traffic stops. The researchers provided NBC News with the traffic-stop data — the largest such dataset ever collected — which points to pervasive inequality in how police decide to stop and search white and minority drivers.
