GeoLite Legacy Downloadable Databases

We will be discontinuing updates to the GeoLite Legacy databases as of April 1, 2018. You will still be able to download the April 2018 release until January 2, 2019. GeoLite Legacy users will need to update their integrations in order to switch to the free GeoLite2 or commercial GeoIP databases by April 2018.

For more information, please visit our Support Center.

In addition, in 2019, latitude and longitude coordinates in the GeoLite2 databases will be removed.* Latitude and longitude coordinates will continue to be provided in GeoIP2 databases. Please check back for updates.

* GeoLite2 databases are free IP geolocation databases comparable to, but less accurate than, MaxMind’s GeoIP2 databases.

New Database Format Available: This page is for our legacy databases. For our latest database format, please see our GeoLite2 Databases.

Databases

IP Geolocation
The GeoLite databases are our free IP geolocation databases. They are updated on the first Tuesday of each month. These databases are offered in the same binary and csv formats as our subscription databases. Any code which can read the subscription databases can also read the GeoLite databases.

IP geolocation is inherently imprecise. Locations are often near the center of the population. Any location provided by a GeoIP database should not be used to identify a particular address or household.

We publish accuracy statistics for GeoLite City.

IP Geolocation Usage

IP geolocation is inherently imprecise. Locations are often near the center of the population. Any location provided by a GeoIP database should not be used to identify a particular address or household.

Use the Accuracy Radius as an indication of geolocation accuracy for the latitude and longitude coordinates we return for an IP address. The actual location of the IP address is likely within the area defined by this radius and the latitude and longitude coordinates.

MaxMind DB File Format Specification
An interesting data structure format -- 'the MaxMind DB file format is a database format that maps IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to data records using an efficient binary search tree.'

Cautionary tale about mapping IP addresses to the real world
Summary: IP address != lat long and how opaque lots of this is to
normal people, and how the join between virtual and real is always a
weak point in the way everything works. (Reminded me, on a tiny scale,
of repeated attempts to get one particular council to understand that
a postcode's centroid was not a reliable way of knowing where a thing
was).

Internet mapping turned a remote farm into a digital hell
One important lesson of my sleuthing is that IP addresses, which get used as digital evidence in criminal trials and to secure search warrants, are not always reliable. Like Social Security numbers, they were a numerical system built for one purpose that are now used for something completely different. Social Security numbers were designed to keep track of a person’s earnings over their lifetime, but are now the security token used to lock down their entire identity. IP addresses were meant to allow computers to talk to each other, but have been repurposed to reveal details about the person behind that computer. The words “security” and “address” in their titles promise more than they can deliver. ¶ Now that I’ve made MaxMind aware of the consequences of the default locations it’s chosen, Mather says they’re going to change them. They are picking new default locations for the U.S. and Ashburn, Virginia that are in the middle of bodies of water, rather than people’s homes.

Internet mapping turned a remote farm into a digital hell
I think this a bit of a legal issue for MaxMind:
The trouble for the Taylor farm started in 2002, when a Massachusetts-based digital mapping company called MaxMind decided it wanted to provide “IP intelligence” to companies who wanted to know the geographic location of a computer to, for example, show the person using it relevant ads or to send the person a warning letter if they were pirating music or movies.
