Springfield MA Chemical Spill Hospitalizes Four People Firefighters
SPRINGFIELD - Four people were sent to the hospital early Friday as a precaution after they were exposed to a chemical spill at the U.S. Postal Service Network Distribution Center in Indian Orchard, a fire official said.

Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi, said firefighters were called to the facility on Fiberloid Street just before 12:30 a.m. for a reported chemical spill.

He said approximately one gallon of an industrial-cleaning chemical containing oxalis acid was spilled at the facility. Exposure to oxalis acid can cause respiratory problems, and as a result, the scene was considered a hazardous materials emergency.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Haz-Mat Team was called to the scene to assist.

The four people who were closest to the spill and potentially exposed were all brought to the hospital to be evaluated, Leger said.

Amesbury Truth chemical spill: 3 in hospital with serious injuries
Two people remain in intensive care at Strong Memorial Hospital on Monday after sustaining life-threatening injuries during a morning chemical spill inside a Jefferson Road building.

What happened?

The incident happened around 9:20 a.m. when demolition crews cutting into a concrete wall at Amesbury Truth, 1555 Jefferson Road, pierced pipes containing the chemical compound methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, or MDI, said Henrietta Fire District Assistant Chief Mark Cholach.

Amesbury Truth makes window and door products, including weatherstripping made out of foam and other materials.

He said the demolition workers were clearing equipment inside the building to prep for a move when the spill happened. While chemical storage tanks had been cleaned out, there was apparently some "residual" MDI inside the pipes that "went to aerosolized form once it hit the air," Cholach said. It appears that they were not wearing protective gear at the time of the spill, he said.

"I don't believe they thought there was any chemical process or chemical product still in the system," said Cholach.

Kageyama is annoyed by the boys that approach her to ask her out (she’s not interested), to offer to carry her books for her (she can handle it) or give her flowers (what would she want them for?). Hinata says that she’d like it if a boy once did any of that stuff for her, but she’s a dumbass who doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

When that boy for Hinata shows up, though, Kageyama isn’t annoyed.

She’s furious.

Science community rallies round to help St Andrews teams hit by fire
Research teams at the University of St Andrews that have had their work disrupted by a fire have been moved by offers of help from colleagues in the UK and around the world. Last month’s fire at the biomedical sciences building displaced research groups and put many labs out of action. However, researchers are hopeful that most of the equipment and lab supplies were left undamaged and can eventually be recovered.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of 10 February and was attended by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Efforts to extinguish it involved eight vehicles and over 30 firefighters. As a result of fire and water damage the university expects the biomedical sciences building to be out of action for at least a year.

Russell Morris, head of chemistry at St Andrews, tells Chemistry World that investigators now know the fire started during a routine glass cleaning procedure, though they are not sure what the exact source of ignition was and may ‘never be able to say’. In the fire’s immediate aftermath, members of the university’s staff re-entered the building to save precious biological samples from rapidly thawing freezers. Although damage from the blaze itself was limited to a few rooms, the huge amount of water required to put it out has left the building waterlogged and unusable. Those affected have now been taking stock and assessing the damage.
