Datatilsynet: Tracking in Public Spaces – The use of WiFi, Bluetooth, beacons and intelligent video analytics.
In recent years, Norwegian companies and businesses have developed an increased interest in tracking our physical movements. Some companies use tracking technologies to calculate traffic delays during rush hour traffic or to estimate the waiting time at airport security. Others want to map and analyse their customers’ movements through shops and shopping centres in detail. Overall, the companies utilising tracking technologies are very different and pursue a wide range of objectives.

Att arbeta med 1950-talets matematikmaskiner
The witness seminar “Att arbeta med 1950-talets matematikmaskiner” [Working with the Computing Machines of the 1950s] was held at Tekniska museet [The National Museum of Science and Technology] in Stockholm on 12 September 2005, and led by Lars Arosenius. At the seminar the development of the first Swedish electronic computer BESK, at the Swedish Board for Computing Machinery (MMN), and the design of the subsequent BESK copies SMIL, at MMN, and Facit EDB, at AB Åtvidabergs Industrier/Facit AB, were discussed. Different design problems were observed, particularly the problem of developing working memories. The problem of the service reliability of the first computers was brought up. Furthermore the seminar discussed the early use of computers, paying special attention to the role of the largest users, the defense and meteorology areas. Problems such as hardware dependence of programming, memory capacity as a limiting factor and the use of subroutines were brought up. Other subjects touched upon included the peripheral equipment, the importance of the visits to study in the USA, the environment around BESK, the organizational problems at MMN, and the recruiting of the BESK group by AB Åtvidabergs Industrier.

WOZ Disk Image Reference Created by John K. Morris
"Why yet another Apple II disk image format?
This is probably the question many of you reading this document are asking. It basically comes down to the simple fact that none of the currently existing formats accurately represent the way data is encoded on an Apple II floppy disk. There is a place for a format that is an accurate representation of a bitstream that is also the exact length of a track so that it can be looped correctly. And since we are creating a format, it is also a great time to ensure that we organize the data in the image file in a way that allows for easy unpacking with as little memory and processing overhead as possible - this provides more performant usage in hardware and software emulators."

Identification of Entities in Swedish
"A crucial aspect of search applications is the possibility to identify named entities in free-form text and provide functionality for entity-based, complex queries towards the indexed data. By enriching each entity with semantically relevant information acquired from outside the text, one can create the foundation for an advanced search application. Thus, given a document about Denmark, where neither of the words Copenhagen, country, nor capital are mentioned, it should be possible to retrieve the document by querying for capital Copenhagen or European country."

Potential for Discrimination in Online Targeted Advertising
Recently, online targeted advertising platforms
like Facebook have been criticized for
allowing advertisers to discriminate against
users belonging to sensitive groups, i.e., to
exclude users belonging to a certain race
or gender from receiving their ads. Such
criticisms have led, for instance, Facebook
to disallow the use of attributes such as
ethnic affinity from being used by advertisers
when targeting ads related to housing
or employment or financial services. In
this paper, we show that such measures are
far from sufficient and that the problem
of discrimination in targeted advertising is
much more pernicious. We argue that discrimination
measures should be based on
the targeted population and not on the attributes
used for targeting. We systematically
investigate the different targeting
methods offered by Facebook for their ability
to enable discriminatory advertising.
We show that a malicious advertiser can
create highly discriminatory ads without
using sensitive attributes. Our findings call
for exploring fundamentally new methods
for mitigating discrimination in online targeted

Leslie Lamport: Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System
The concept of one event happening before another
in a distributed system is examined, and is shown to
define a partial ordering of the events. A distributed
algorithm is given for synchronizing a system of logical
clocks which can be used to totally order the events.
The use of the total ordering is illustrated with a
method for solving synchronization problems. The
algorithm is then specialized for synchronizing physical
clocks, and a bound is derived on how far out of
synchrony the clocks can become.

RDS in Europe, RBDS in the USA – What are the differences and how can receivers cope with both systems?
The Radio Data System (RDS) for FM broadcasting
was developed within the European Broadcasting
Union. This system was specified by the
EBU in 1984 and has been introduced in the large
majority of European countries since 1987. Later
the system was slightly enhanced through several
modifications, and in 1990 it was adopted as a European
standard of CENELEC (EN 50067).
Today most FM stations in Western Europe use
RDS, and receivers, mostly car radios, with RDS
functionality are available in Europe from some
50 different manufacturers at prices that are only
slightly higher than those of conventional radios

Compressing Labels of Dynamic XML Data using Base-9 Scheme and Fibonacci Encoding
The flexibility and self-describing nature of XML has made it the most common markup language used for data representation over the Web. XML data is naturally modelled as a tree, where the structural tree information can be encoded into labels via XML labelling scheme in order to permit answers to queries without the need to access original XML files. As the transmission of XML data over the Internet has become vibrant, it has also become necessary to have an XML labelling scheme that supports dynamic XML data. For a large-scale and frequently updated XML document, existing dynamic XML labelling schemes still suffer from high growth rates in terms of their label size, which can result in overflow problems and/or ambiguous data/query retrievals.

Detecting Text in Natural Scenes with Stroke Width Transform
"We present a novel image operator that seeks to find the value of stroke width for each image pixel, and demonstrate its use on the task of text detection in natural images. The suggested operator is local and data dependent, which makes it fast and robust enough to eliminate the need for multi-scale computation or scanning windows. Extensive testing shows that the suggested scheme outperforms the latest published algorithms. Its simplicity allows the algorithm to detect texts in many fonts and languages. "

Animated graphics for television New Zealand
The purpose of this project was to explore methods of expanding the computer graphics facilities available to Television New Zealand particularly in the field of animated graphics. At present, their in house equipment is incapable of supporting many of their requirements, and producers ore often unable to include graphics sequences because of the cost of commercial graphics services. The initial part of the project required research in the field of graphics systems and. their implementation, and also a survey of the requirements and currently available facilities at TVNZ. Following this, a prototype animated graphics system based on University equipment was proposed and is now partly implemented.
This report contains a review of the initial research and the factors leading to the major design decisions. It also includes a description of the proposed animation system, with a more detailed explanation of the ports of the system which have now been implemented.
