“You’re hugging Peter,” Derek said from behind them, confusion very obvious in his voice.

“Yep,” Stiles gave back, not moving from his current position, speaking more into Peter’s hair than anything.

“Why are you hugging him?” Derek asked, and Stiles shrugged as best as he could, with his arms still around Peter.

“He just woke up from a coma. I don’t even want to think about how long he went without a hug,” Stiles gave back.

Not wanting to think on it took much, Stiles took a step forward and passed his hand between the bars, moving the bleeding side closer to Derek’s mouth.

“Not too close, he bites.”

Stiles snatched his hand away just as Derek had been about to lick at it. The snarl he got in response was not comforting.

“He what?” Stiles asked nervously, turning to Deaton.

The man looked a little amused. “Don’t worry, only if he doesn’t like you.”

“Well, he probably hates me, now!” Stiles insisted, turning back to Derek.

He looked extremely displeased.

The life of an omega isn't exactly glamorous. They're taken away from their families when they present, and not allowed back into society until they're safely mated. Stiles just came away from his coming out ball with two potential mates. Legally, he has to choose by the end of the season, or else he'll have to stay in the omega school for another year, until the next season, when all this will start again.

This is a story about what it's like to have your very existence regulated, and what happens when you defy society and fall in love.

Stiles should know better than to trust an offer that seems too good to be true, especially when it comes from Erica. He's supposed to be staying in Erica and Boyd's apartment, not this stupidly ridiculous Hale Pack mansion with Sentinel Prime Peter Hale, who Stiles has an enormous crush on.

Stiles's magic has been restless under his skin all morning. Usually, that means something big is about to happen, but Stiles hopes it happens after the boring lawyer meeting he's being forced to attend.

“What’s your name? I can’t keep calling you Balto.”

“What’s yours?”

“Stiles.”

Derek raises an eyebrow. That isn’t his real name. There’s no way. But now he thinks about it, he has a vague memory of someone, probably Uncle Peter, telling him that with the fae, names have power. “I’m Miguel,” he says.

“Lie.”

“Are you trying to tell me your real name is Stiles?”

Stiles runs his tongue across his teeth and considers Derek carefully. “Fair enough,” he says, “Miguel it is.”

Grabbing his groceries and pocketing the change, Derek turns to leave; he’s nearly at the door when Stiles calls out, “By the way, Miguel, if you’re interested, it’s two for one on bags of kibble at the pet store down the street.”

Derek doesn’t look back, doesn’t hesitate, just raises a hand and flips him off on the way out.

Moon's Notes: The fic that is mostly light-hearted and happy, and yet still bittersweet and sad. I smiled through tears, no lie. Stiles is a half-fae stuck in Beacon Hills as its replacement Nemeton/Guardian, he loves and loses everyone over time (Sheriff! ::sniff::) until he finally meets Derek and falls in love.

Every scene from the entire show where these two knuckleheads shared air.

((Kudos to nevospitanniy for this lovely supercut, which has made it possible for me to forever avoid actually watching Teen Wolf! I mean, I tried, but come on.))

Look, Derek is the worst. Everyone knows that. Their fearless leader is a total and complete failwolf.

Which means the rest of them? Are kind of the worst too. They’re a ramshackle, slap dashed, sorry excuse for a pack that’s about a half second away from getting one of them killed. And this is a problem, because Stiles would really like to survive high school. Thanks.

Still, no one deserves what Derek has gone through. Nobody.

And it’s about time somebody told him that.
