Amazon Alexa's Whisper Mode Live in U.S. |
A couple of weeks after teasing Amazon Alexa’s ability to whisper back to voice commands, the feature is now live.
According to a report citing Amazon, the feature is now live in the U.S. Currently, it only works in the U.S. with English. Amazon is betting this Alexa feature will come in handy at bedtime or at night, when a person is trying to keep a quiet environment, and for parents who don’t want to wake a child with a loud voice command or response from Alexa.
Whisper Mode is one of a bevy of features Amazon is developing for Alexa. At a September event, the eCommerce giant also announced Alexa Guard, which is a sound detection system that enables Alexa to recognize the sounds of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and glass breaking, the outlet reported.

Amazon opens up more in-app sales for Alexa skills | Mobile Marketer
Amazon now offers another way for marketers to earn money from apps developed for the e-commerce giant's Alexa digital assistant. Voice-powered apps, called "Alexa skills," can now charge extra fees for more features like additional content, hints in a trivia game or other freemium consumables, the company announced in a blog post.
Sony Pictures Television will soon debut a skill for its trivia game "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" that lets players buy one-time-use lifelines if they get stuck on a question, according to the blog post. Other examples of money-making consumable content include additional sessions with a hypnotherapist or extra points to keep a voice game going.
Amazon piloted consumable sales in a private beta test after debuting in-skill purchases last year, TechCrunch reported. Amazon will host a webinar on "Building Alexa Skills with Consumables" on October 16 for people seeking more information on how to incorporate money-making features into their skills.

Amazon Echo subwoofer and Alexa-capable smart plug may be on the way • Ars Technica
Valentina Palladino:
<p>Amazon seems to have given us a glimpse into some of its new, unreleased products. Listings on Amazon UK show a new Echo Sub, a subwoofer designed to work with Echo speakers, and a new Amazon Smart Plug, a socket adapter with Alexa capabilities, both with an availability date of October 11. Amazon has since removed the listings, but reports from Pocket-lint show images and details of the two new devices.

The Echo Sub looks like a fatter version of Amazon's Echo speaker, almost like a clone of Apple's HomePod. The wireless subwoofer includes a 6-inch down-firing woofer and 100W of bass, tech that would certainly improve the quality of existing Echo speakers. Some complained after Amazon released the updated version of the original Echo last year, claiming its sound quality was subpar.

Listed within the device's description is stereo pairing, a feature that hasn't been available to Echo speakers yet. Currently, users can only group multiple speakers together to fill a room with sound, but they won't get that rich, complex left/right stereo sound. It appears that will be possible with the Echo Sub connected to two compatible Echo devices.</p>

Stereo pairing and subwoofers are all becoming standard very rapidly: Sonos might have something to worry about. After years in which its combination of sound quality, streaming capability and variety set it apart, it's being caught up at the top and bottom by Apple and Amazon. Is there room for it in the middle?
