Russia’s troll farm nearly doubled its information warfare funding in the first half of 2018 October 19, 2018 at 05:16PM https://ift.tt/2AjpjXb

The infamous Russian troll farm in St Petersburg is stepping up its disinformation warfare in 2018, according to a criminal complaint by US authorities against the organization’s accountant.

The pro-Putin, oligarch-funded operation spent nearly as much in the first six months of 2018 as it did the entire year before. Between Jan. 2016 and June 2018, the Internet Research Agency’s total budget was over $35 million (more than 2 billion rubles), the complaint says. It details the year-by-year expenditure as follows:

2016: approx. $12 million (720 million rubles)

2017: approx. $12.2 million  (733 million rubles)

Jan. to June 2018: approx. $10 million (650 million rubles)

Apple isn’t the only company raking in billions from the new iPhones October 19, 2018 at 04:33PM https://ift.tt/2RVOhmp

Smartphones have become one of the biggest drivers of revenue for companies making the chips that power modern technology.

Possibly the best example of this can be found in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), now the primary supplier of Apple’s mobile chips. This week, the company reported that its new 7-nanometer chip technology, most notably found in Apple’s new slate of iPhones, accounted for 11% of the most-recent quarter’s revenue, or more than $930 million.

Looking at the company’s revenue over the past 13 years, newer chips that can pack more transistors into the same amount of space for use in smartphones have cannibalized the chipmaker’s revenue. Chips larger than 0.11 micrometers, which used to be the company’s sole source of revenue, now counts for less than 25%. Meanwhile, TSMC expects its 7nm chip sales to rise to 20% of revenue in this current quarter.

Big Think
Yes, Mega Millions just passed $1 billion. What does that look like? October 19, 2018 at 04:20PM https://ift.tt/2yMBrhB

The Mega Millions lottery just passed $1 billion for tonight's drawing.

What does that even look like, when represented by various currencies?

It takes just 6 numbers to win. You can only, however, purchase tickets up until 10:45 ET tonight.

Here it is as represented by pallets of $100 bills

It will be the second-largest lottery jackpot, after the Power Ball lottery of January 2016 that netted nearly $1.6 billion. Of course, there are taxes to be paid, and then, the winner(s) have to decide on whether it's paid out over time or in one lump sum, which decreases the total received.

I think at my age, I'd take it all at once. You?

Here's another way to look at it:

So ... what are you odds of winning?

1 in 259 milion.

That's a long shot. Compare it to other things:

Odds of being struck by lightning? 1 in 700,000.

Odds of being killed by a meteorite? 1 in 1.6 million.

Odds of being bitten by a shark? 1 in 3.75 million.

One more view of what $1 billion looks like:

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

(This was earlier today, when it was $970 million)

Photos: Spiders have blanketed another Greek beach with massive webs October 19, 2018 at 04:05PM https://ift.tt/2Aj6OSQ

Just last month, a strange phenomenon the popped up on the shores of a Greek lagoon led the world to let out a yelping, horrified “Oh, hell no.”

In September, a massive cobweb sprouted up among the vegetation in Aitoliko, marking a seasonal spider tradition of mating, feeding and raising their young, essentially an eight-legged bacchanal.

Now, just in time for Halloween, the spiders have struck again—this time in Greece’s northeast.

According to Greek media, the spiders have draped their webs over nearly a kilometer of vegetation around Lake Vistonida. Photos from today (Oct. 19) showcase the tangled empire at sunrise.

The sight of the webs covering trees, bushes and roadside shrines may appear to augur some kind of arachnid-induced rapture, but the increase in the structures  is said to be harmless.

The prayer book from Marilyn Monroe’s Jewish conversion is up for sale October 19, 2018 at 04:05PM https://ift.tt/2R2rDaC

Marilyn Monroe met playwright Arthur Miller on the set of As Young As You Feel, in 1951. That night, she wrote in her diary: “Met a man tonight … It was, bam! It was like running into a tree. You know, like a cool drink when you’ve had a fever.”

Within five years, the two had married and Monroe had converted to Judaism. Now, her personal prayer book, known as a siddur, is going under the hammer in a New York auction on Nov. 12. The cream-colored book is expected to sell for thousands. Annotations throughout it are believed to have been made by the actress herself, “as if someone were receiving instructions on what prayers to recite/not to recite,” the auction listing notes. The book was previously sold by Christie’s in 1999 in a lot of related items for $4,025 and is now in some disrepair, with its spine all but detached.

Monroe’s conversion came as a surprise to many. Miller’s family was not Orthodox, and he was not personally religious. (Later, he said that he saw her conversion as “rather unnecessary.”) But Monroe seems to have had a sincere, personal interest in becoming Jewish, telling Rabbi Robert Goldburg, who oversaw her conversion,  “that she was impressed with the rationalism of Judaism—its ethical and prophetic ideals and its concept of close family life,” as he wrote in a letter to a mentor.

Throughout her marriage to Miller, Monroe appeared at fundraising events for Hebrew University, celebrated Chanukah and attended Goldburg’s Passover seders. After the couple divorced in 1961, Monroe told Goldburg that she had no intention of renouncing Judaism after their separation. When she died the following year, however, she did not receive a Jewish burial or funeral, and was buried in the non-denominational Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary. Her Catholic ex-husband, Joe DiMaggio, oversaw the details of the ceremony.

The founder of the Little Free Library has died October 19, 2018 at 01:50PM https://ift.tt/2Ezzf2U

You may have seen them: Quaint, sturdily built wooden boxes shaped like houses, stuffed with esoteric books about birding and worn novels by Danielle Steel. Todd Bol, the founder who started the vast network of these tiny, volunteer-built book swap boxes, passed away yesterday (Oct. 18).

Bol built the first such box on his property in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009 and hoped someday there might be 2,000 such boxes installed in the US. Today there are more than 75,000 in 88 countries. He started the nonprofit Little Free Library, which builds and sells boxes to hold books for exchange, provides resources and books to DIY library-builders, and promotes literacy programs.

Bol was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early October and died at 62 years old.

A library in Richmond, Virginia.

“We are a ‘book family,’ and we always have a stack of books to pass along,” writes Brett Barry, an audio producer who built one library from reclaimed building supplies in the Catskills region of New York in 2015. His daughter helped paint it. “It’s always fun to see a car pull to the side of the road to discover the library and browse the books inside,” he says.

A library in New York state.
Seeing—if not actually using—the Little Free Library is a romantic reminder of the simple pleasure of swapping a book with a stranger. A cross between world-weary pages stacked on a shelf in a hostel, and the little thrill of realizing a book you want to read is available for free, it’s a physical manifestation of book-loving neighborliness. The notebooks kept in some libraries—catalogs of people’s borrowings and their notes of enthusiasm—remind one of the pencil-scribbled smiley faces in hiking trail register books, physical mementos of transience and global movement.
