Meta: Why is Aziraphale so gay - DictionaryWrites
I've been threatening for three days now to write out this meta about why Aziraphale chooses to present himself as gay, despite being sexless and not even a man, and here it is! It took eight straight hours of writing, and there are 35 footnotes, with constant reference to the text. Kill me!

This meta is basically me picking apart the things that make Aziraphale come across as gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide, and then talking about why he'd choose to present himself like that, and also, that I love him. I love him so much.</blockquote

What is the Business of the Church? – Jeremy Yoder
As a pastor, I am tempted by Elwood Yoder’s pastoral and pleasant description of a church meeting. I also sometimes experience controversy fatigue. But I reject Yoder’s implication that sexual abuse and LGBTQ inclusion are not an essential business of the church. When we treat people as if they are side issues or problems that the church can choose to ignore, we no longer follow the Jesus Christ who ate with prostitutes and healed lepers. When we ignore those whose identities and experiences make us uncomfortable, we no longer follow the Jesus who healed on the Sabbath and outraged the priests and Pharisees. When we choose our comfort zone as the basis of ministry, we no longer follow the Jesus Christ who died on the cross and told us to pick up our own crosses to follow him.

ladybusiness | Ewan McGregor's Stupid Beautiful Face: A History of Han/Luke and Star Wars Slash
The arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens made the Star Wars fandom explode earlier this year. The modern Star Wars fan is catered to not only by seemingly every kind of product with enough surface area to slap Kylo Ren on, but also by the width and breadth of the fanworks available to her. With decades of fanworks to sift through, the possibilities can seem infinite. But once she’s read her eyes out on all the Poe/Finn fic she can find and indulged in prequel fanvids set to Evanescence songs, she might have a question.

Where, a new Star Wars fan might well ask, is all the Han/Luke fic?

The Largest Ever Analysis of Film Dialogue by Gender: 2,000 scripts, 25,000 actors, 4 million lines
How many movies are actually about men? What changes by genre, era, or box-office revenue? What circumstances generate more diversity?

To begin answering these questions, we Googled our way to 8,000 screenplays and matched each character’s lines to an actor. From there, we compiled the number of lines for male and female characters across roughly 2,000 films, arguably the largest undertaking of script analysis, ever.

Cultural rituals and the christmaspocalypse - kerrypolka
Seriously what do cultural rituals do anyway

Here is my favourite ever definition of religion, which is from Reza Aslan's No god but God, a really good and accessible overview and analysis of Islam:

"Religion, it must be understood, is not faith. Religion is the story of faith. It is an institutionalized system of symbols and metaphors (read rituals and myths) that provides a common language with which a community of faith can share with each other their numinous encounter with the Divine Presence."

(I would modify this to strike "the Divine Presence" and replace it with "heavy shit nobody totally understands" and "faith" with "FEELINGS". "YOU WOULD", I hear several of you saying. Yes, I would!)

"Sooner or later, the graveyards are full of everyone." - recessional
The trick is that Discworld answers nihilism with a nihilism so great that it makes nihilism pointless: where Pierce posits that diplomacy, peace, cooperation, etc are all holding actions, the Discworld thematic core returns, "Well yes. So's breathing."

Redefining Events: Body Concept and Bodily Relationships for Cyborgs, Werewolves, Super-soldiers, and Other Altered Bodies - Instigator
A moderately in-depth analysis of the psychological effects of events which would be expected to drastically alter a person or characters relationship to their body, including factors relating to acceptance and likely effects of varying levels of body change acceptance. Written from a Cognitive Behavioral Theory viewpoint, but I’ve tried to make it as generally accessible as possible. I’ve used the MCU Avengers Phase 1 as my primary point of reference with occasional references to other fandoms and no Phase 2 spoilers.

The Violence of Mennonite Process: Finding the Address of the Present (part 1 of 2) - Stephanie Krehbiel
In 2009, I started a doctoral program in American Studies at the University of Kansas, with a plan to study what, on a good day, I call “the conflicts around sexual diversity in the Mennonite church,” and what, on a bad day, I call, “Mennonites and their f*#ked-up sex problems.” I have also resorted to the fast and efficient descriptor “LGBTQ issues in the Mennonite church,” because the phrase “sexual diversity,” outside of LGBTQ and academic circles, often leads to a “come again?” But increasingly I feel allergic to the word “issues.” Mennonites use that word like a armored shield against people whose actual bodies they’re afraid of. The further I get into this, the more “f*#ked-up sex problems” seems like the way to go.
I love Pink Menno so much

I'm the tyranny of evil men - thingswithwings
Because I've seen some posts talking about how Cap2 is a surprisingly on-point, modern, political critique, and specifically that it's critiquing the contemporary surveillance state, drone killings, etc. And I've seen posts saying that Cap2, while it may gesture at those things, doesn't seem to put any blame on Shield, instead shifting the blame to Hydra, which seems to imply that Shield spying on us and killing people isn't a problem, and it's only a problem when Nazis get involved.

I don't think either of these readings are wrong; in fact, I think they're both right, because they're both pulling on threads that exist in the film. I think that Cap2 is in some ways a deeply ambivalent text – ambivalent in the sense of "going in all directions," not the sense that it doesn't care.

The Visual Intelligence of Pacific Rim
I want to talk about Pacific Rim, and why it is not, as I've seen a frustrating number of commentators claim, a "dumb" movie, or a movie that "knows that it's dumb," or anything like that, but first I want to talk about my girlfriend, and you're going to let me because you've already clicked through and given me the pageview, so you may as well stick around. Besides, I think it will help provide a reference point for some of the ideas I'm talking about.

Star Trek Into Darkness: The Spoiler FAQ
How does the movie start?

Well, with Kirk and Bones fucking with a planet of primitive aliens. They steal some kind of holy scroll, and then get chased through a red jungle.

Seems like kind of a dick move.

Well, it’s not very clear, but ostensibly they’ve stolen the scroll to get chased, in order to draw the aliens away from a volcano that’s about to explode.

Okay, that seems reasonable.

Except that 1) when the volcano erupts, it’s going to kill everybody on the planet, so it hardly matters where they are, and 2) Spock is getting dropped down into the volcano to set off a cold fusion bomb.

Wait, what?

Yeah, he sets off the cold fusion bomb and all the lava freezes.

You know cold fusion isn’t actually cold, right? It’s only “cold” in the sense that opposed to regular fusion it’s not a bazillion degrees hot.
