Okay wait a minute ... the new Windows Performance Monitor ... runs in a web browser? Unironically?

It looks like they are shifting all machine administration to the web? wtf? Does anyone have experience with this, and is it what it looks like?https://t.co/KS8CKYsnrt

All these years I thought Gmail webmail protected me from being tracked through images, because I somehow understood that it preloaded all images immediately through a proxy… So turns out, it does use a proxy, but only when you open the email 😑 https://t.co/o5VTTsCpEy

That was for Windows 95. The development manager bought a copy of every piece of PC software on the shelves and brought it back to the lab for compatibility testing! Why? Because software compatibility was the locus of value for Windows.

Not so for macOS.

macOS is a value-add to sell Macs. It will *never* have the same level of attention paid to software compatibility or ease of development as Windows has/had.

People mocked Ballmer for his stage chant, but it was both earnest and extremely clear-eyed about the business.

While there is truth in this, it isn’t a case of “amazing engineering” vs incompetence. It is a question of organizational emphasis, driven by business imperatives.

Until Apple figures out their laptop shit, this is the best computer they sell. They last forever too. In Spain I'm still running a 2014 iMac 5K with no urgency to upgrade. No, it doesn't move, but pair this with an iPad Pro on the go, and you might not miss that MBP! pic.twitter.com/uDtSdhJbbv

Reminds me of the time people found out Unity was relying on an undocumented API, around the iPhoneOS 3 or iOS 4 timeframe IIRC. I think we were affected too (by direct usage, not through Unity. Our bad. I believe we were contaminated by an Erica Sadun book).

Good times. https://t.co/22FibJ8Gkn

A little bit, but not the motivating factor. It's more about reducing usability friction in moving between apps and in getting data into your documents. Having an overall-smaller app is a side benefit.

Looks like Photoshop for iPad does NOT support RAW.

This seems like a huge deal to me. Anyone know the logic here? Has RAW stopped being important for photographers?

The feeling I get reading the ire is that people want an Apple sanctioned electron like toolkit if they’re not going to allow electron proper. Basically so they don’t have to build a native app, and that seems to ignore the goals Apple has for their platform. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
