Also discontinued: the Monday executive meetings where every product was reviewed in detail. I'm in no position to say whether discontinuing them was good or bad, and I don't know if a different practice replaced them serving the same purpose, maybe better. But I wonder.

'No widespread harm' is the most optimistic scenario. Bad actors could have known about this since June and we'd never know, as [remote] root access to a machine would let you easily cover your tracks. SIP is there to help prevent root being too damaging for a casual attacker https://t.co/iZH1yLfr5u

Before doing that, surely worth understanding why this was such an abysmal failure on macOS?
Apple tried it at least twice as far as I remember, and both times no-one really signed up. They used the menu in the most minimal way w/o use of the rest, eg Balloon Help.

Forstall isn’t coming back unless it’s as CEO. There’s no question about that. I still have a tiny bit of hope, but things would have to get real ugly with Apple.

Dear Apple, after you’ve audited your macOS High Sierra for blatant security flaws, maybe audit the videos drivers too. Really tired of coming back to my Mac to see it has restarted because of another kernel panic. More kernel panics in a month than I’ve seen in prior 10 years.

I also want to briefly state why I say it at all:

Not everyone in Apple agreed with the decision to let Scott go. It was a very divisive move. It was one in a series of very questionable management decisions after Steve died.

Scott was damn good. That’s all.

I want to be clear that when I say things like “Bring Forstall back”, I’m not super serious. Well, I am insofar as I’m pretty sure he is available and can probably still do his job.

But I fully realize he isn’t coming back.

Of course it's also still impossible to buy iPad apps on an iPhone, so now basically I can never again buy an iPad app for my family members who have iPads unless I first buy an iPad? Genius.

That Tim Cook asked Scott Forstall to apologize for maps was bullshit in the first place. You can't call yourself a leader if you refuse to take responsibility for what happens in your organization. Tim Cook is a disgrace.

On one hand, it's nice to see they've taken a more reasonable approach to public apologies. On the other, it sucks they had to fire one of their best executives before they learned that lesson.

I can only go from what I can know. I have heard multiple times that Apple’s software QA is not where it should be from folks I trust. Plus I have eyes. Forget the Forstall comment for a second.

What do you think Apple can do to stop these problems from repeating?

There are always bugs - especially ones that affect battery life. But for basic things just not working having bluetooth and phone app be so bad for so many people is pretty surprising. Further both have a big effect on people.
