All that bridging and value type stuff was also pretty directly motivated by forgot-to-copy bugs with value classes, and the long standing requests for typed and unboxed collections

We tried that in the early 80s. Modula-2 was being propagated as a high-level language for writing OS level software (it knew the machine's WORD / BYTE type and had provisions for interrupt handling), so some friends got together and wrote an entire system in M-2 for a 68k CPU…

The part in Obj-C that caused performance problems wasn't the Objective part, the dealing with UX frameworks part, the slow part was in data structures and algorithms where your choice was slow or writing entirely in C. Swift is already vastly better.

Great point.

3D Touch may be on the chopping block, but its greatest legacy has been the Taptic Engine; it's led to the unparalleled Force Touch Trackpad, as well as the solid state Home Button. I'd expect Apple Watch to gain solid state eventually too. https://t.co/jMgz66VrFP pic.twitter.com/ZPOXKbEQWV

It's interesting to see the bind Google is in:
People call upon them to improve privacy and security, yet every one of their moves to do so is interpreted as malicious. https://t.co/qO45qB4QTn

I still use Safari as my only web browser. But it's bumming me out that more and more I have to open Chrome for a one off use of a web page.

I don't know if Chrome is breaking things or Safari is falling behind. But it feels like the early days of Safari again. https://t.co/LtxN4Hhbk0

I'm always interested in hearing feature requests for Firefox DevTools. Especially if you've got some kind of low-hanging fruit that would save everyone 5+ grams of frustration weekly

I sometimes have the same dilemma. I always try to be original and do my own take on things (as do they; Castro is by far my most innovative competitor), but sometimes, a competitor does something the best/only/right way, and the best choice is to do it the same way.

We’re cool. https://t.co/DK1cDBx1az

Great post. It baffles me as well. I can only assume that the bloggers are sincere and really do love it and find it productive. And given that most people don’t see things the same way, of course it makes sense to try to show them the light.

Full credit to @marcoarment for bringing easy video clip sharing to podcast apps. I genuinely hate copying features from other apps, but once in a while a competitor does something really fucking cool and you have to respond. https://t.co/s50L3OmVam

Ok here's a bonus Mac Pro hot take:
Nvidia intentionally tries to create a lock out ecosystem to freeze out competitors, and I have no issue with Apple trying to break their monopoly. But I'm very sympathetic to those already under the lock in.

I feel like the answer here if you want Mac apps on iPad is still AppKit for iOS. The reason UIKit is simple is it can’t diverge too far from the phone. Cut the cord, and build the Mac and iPad on it’s own API. And AppKit is a great starting point. #twitterOpinion

“Apple should lean in and make all Mac apps Marzipan apps even if they aren’t very good” is a great take if you aren’t actually dependent on a well functioning Mac.

Jeez. Apple should’ve acquired them

And they’re former Apple employees!

Instead, the reborn Microsoft acquired this fantastic startup
