"Many people keep buying iPhones simply because they can’t fathom showing up as a snot-green Android bubble in iMessage (and they worry they’ll lose their iMessage group chats if they switch over).”

Int division is extra extra slow, to the point it’s worth branching to avoid it. A 64 bit division will even get optimized to branch and do a 32 bit division instead when the operands are small enough

I wish I knew more about optimizing on modern CPUs. It’s so hard to get decent info these days, compared to the Apple //e where they published exactly how many cycles every op took. Nowadays it seems like branches are always potentially super-slow...but you’re saying math slower?

Say what you want about AppKit, but at least it doesn't allow multiple actions on a button like UIKit.

I get bitten by that _all the time_ because a copied button in Interface Builder gets the action plus the new one I add. Hard to figure out every time, too.

I absolutely *LOVE* the new Microsoft. To anyone from MS that I've talked to on Twitter: 100% of the time my issue was resolved and people went above and beyond. Kudos! https://t.co/udNpXgFxLO

They botched UWP and are giving up on that. They botched Edge and are giving up their browsing engine to Google. Microsoft is not a company firing on all cylinders on the desktop.

My number one feature request for Safari, a whitelist for Javascript use, defaults to disabled when whitelist enabled. Battery life doubled in one feature!

Microsoft is all about enterprise and the cloud now. They absolutely have not focused on consumers and desktop Windows.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

The Mac has obviously regressed in recent years. The big lie, though, is that Windows has vastly improved. I've used it recently and... it hasn't. Windows is still Windows.

As much as  pivoted away from Mac, Microsoft has pivoted too. It's no longer the Windows/Office company.

Jeff Burtoft (@boyofgreen) says Google’s sharing of cookies between Chrome and PWAs is enviable.

You’ll remember that SFSafariViewController tried this and it ended up being exploited by privacy-abusing trackers. Now, cookies between Safari and SFSVC are completely separate. pic.twitter.com/JZ62UOvtjt

Is anyone else disappointed by the durability of Apple’s Smart Keyboard Case? Ours started having connectivity issues as soon as the warranty was up and this $130(!!) keyboard is now inoperable after just 1.5 years. Genius Bar/Support offer no help on this issue pic.twitter.com/fq17X3LAOQ

This is a very interesting statistic of services percentages of upload traffic in the US. Note iCloud and FaceTime for Apple.

iCloud being the top shows you how much photos iOS users take, which then get synced to iCloud.

Ah! Good to know. I'll have to update my "~/Dropbox/txt/Tweetbot.txt" where I keep these various tidbits.

I really like Choosy. It's one of those little utilities that makes the Mac a nicer place. I keep Safari as my default browser, but use Chrome for anything Google-related.

Apart from all those points: Spotify loves making apps for every conceivable device—and then never updating them ever again; their iPad app actually is worse at taking advantage of the screen now than it was years ago; mobile apps have still almost zero social features; etc...

I have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro. I'm scared of the thought of it breaking, because if I does I'll either have to track down a second hand replacement machine, or downgrade to one of the new MacBook Pro's.

That is genuinely how I view them, as an expensive downgrade. https://t.co/3HQ1kY1uN2

Apple is basically driving the mac ecosystem into the ground through either incompetence or neglect. And I'm actually not sure which possibility is worse for the mac.

The MacBook Pro is basically the workhorse for the mac.
It's amazing Apple has gone from universally loved great MacBook Pro's (with the 2015 MBP) to almost universally disliked terrible MacBook's since 2016, with no real change or response.
