I think Jobs was great at managing humans, while Cook is great at managing resources. The ideal should be to excel at both, but Jobs could get at managing resources through humans, somehow. The other way round is not as feasible. (I’m brainstorming here.)

What aspect(s) of Cook have been misunderstood, in your opinion?

When Jobs passed the baton to Cook before leaving, I actually was optimistic, not a shade of prejudice in my mind. I thought Apple was in good hands. But as years passed, I found Cook’s direction underwhelming.

Apple is supporting the Mac Pro now with Mojave, but recommending a Radeon 560 or 580.

Which is awkward because using either card will disable some pre-boot functions on the Mac Pro because they never had a version with Mac Pro support.

They could do a lot more, but it would require some process changes.

🤔 I should blog about this.

Spending my afternoon being annoyed at how awful https://t.co/rTGiY59nh5 is for external developers

Y’all will just have to believe me when I say that internally, Radar is hands-down the best bug tracking system in the world. The farce we see externally is a travesty and a crime

So we get the public beta before we get our hands on the release notes? https://t.co/HhKmhV6tde

Reading the Andy Grove classic “Only the paranoid survive” and it’s wild how similar cloud vendors behave to pre Intel-Microsoft computing vendors in 1980. pic.twitter.com/EvnMegy5Ee

Seriously, every time we have a serious compatibility issue in an iOS update (I'd say once every 2-3 years) it takes over the majority of our support email for at least a month after release, regardless of how soon after the first beta release a fix.

Microsoft: Yo Dawg we heard you like USB-C Dongles so we made a USB-C Dongle that only works like you want it to if you use other USB-C Dongles.

This is a troll product. Everything about it is designed to troll us.https://t.co/WNR7ioPwvu pic.twitter.com/CPb1Rv5mwF

Disappointed but not surprised to find the old Apple devforums site is gone. Not imported into the new forums and Internet Archive doesn't have them.

Nice! Also you can make this into a bookmarklet so that you can speed up videos on iOS as well. https://t.co/8ytHTgQVOj

Some evidence I found to support this latter use case is the popularity of technologies like JSPatch and DynamicCocoa, which offer a bridge from Objective-C code to JS. Even existing native apps seem to be going out of their way to allow hot patches from the server.

Why are Flutter, React Native, et al. so big in China?

Sure, cross-platform is a big win in a country with a 80/20 split between Android and iOS. But some developers I spoke to said that the real reason is to be able to comply with government requests in a timely manner.

Instead, there’s a lot of momentum right now around cross-platform solutions like React Native and Weex. Case in point: Google chose to announce Flutter RP 1 at GMTC last week. (There were a huge number of people working the conference in Flutter T-shirts, maybe 1:8 ratio)

One thing I heard from a few developers is how difficult it is to find an iOS job in Beijing. The market has been cold for so long that there’s now meme shorthand for the situation:

To that end—WeChat is ubiquitous in China. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. Even Facebook in its heyday doesn’t come close. Glance over the shoulder of anyone using their phone, 99 times out of 100, you’ll see green chat bubbles.

Apple could ban these losers who rip off games and thus encourage indie's to prefer iPhone. But they have long proven that the app-store review process is not about quality, but in fact… well nobody knows what the process is for in fact. https://t.co/IugjnosTL1
