An example of frustratingly inscrutable error messages from SwiftUI. The issue here is mine: it's "thumbnail" not "thumnail"; I was missing a 'b'.

However, that error message would *never* have led me to the right spot.

A 1.0 for sure. :) pic.twitter.com/iIYcVjdhQ6

This is super sad. Interface Builder was one of the most important apps I ever used. My PhD thesis work was packaged up as a set of IB “palettes”, bundles of code that extended it.

It was a beautiful piece of work that gave pure workflow joy for me.

Thanks, Jean-Marie. https://t.co/WGuRxViVge

Worth noting that the reason we likely haven't seen any of the performance benchmarks the team keeps referring to is because, from a technical standpoint, is that even the slowest ad-blocking extensions give you a vastly larger performance gain than if you didn't have one at all.

Some good snippets from the forum thread

1/ "Also, privacy concerns have yet to be substantiated. ... Worth noting is the content usually blocked using existing APIs/extensions is much more privacy intrusive: give me an advertising provider that actually respects privacy..."

("The only way they can disabled currently is by the process I'm requesting for your account." I.e. they can only be disabled is by an Adobe support person putting through a manual request to… someone.)

Here's a "fun" fact. Don't like the marketing notifications in Adobe Creative Cloud? Don't bother unchecking "Show Notifications".

The stories are really good at showing one thing: how much talents Apple is losing by not allowing to work on other locations.

A lot of people aren't willing/interested to relocate to the silicon valley.

Apple Card weighs 14.75 grams. An average credit card weighs 5 grams. The heaviest credit card (JP Morgan Reserve) apparently weighs 27 grams. https://t.co/pGmIFHIUlE https://t.co/o7eRi8fcoQ

If Apple added back RSS import and let me create my own collections (folders), Apple News would be pretty great. But they're not going to do that because they want control.

I enjoyed the Sign In with Apple discussion on @atpfm. Two things:
- By default, Sign In with Apple gives no name/email info. Apps explicitly opt in.
- @marcoarment should probably use the new ASAuthorizationPasswordRequest instead of SecRequestSharedWebCredential in Overcast...

just as an aside, I came to ObjC without C experience, and stumbled along for years as I learned the language whilst making things — as it was so forgiving —, so for me personally, that wasn't a factor

Swift does seem easier to learn than Obj-C at a shallow-enough level to get things done, but it’s probably harder to master or build a deep understanding of, due to the sheer complexity of the language available to you (and other authors of code you may need to read or use).

I think it’s just a matter of months before all these VPN services advertising on podcasts, YouTube, etc, are exposed as giant data mining operations, and even much worse than the things they’re supposed to protect you from.

Games are mostly built in cross platform engines now anyway, indie apps Apple is years removed from giving a crap about, the two coding constituencies Apple actually needs to cater to are a) big companies and b) their in-house teams and Swift is a fine language for them.

TBH, while the “learn to code” stuff is great marketing - and I don’t doubt that Cook genuinely believes in it - the qualities that make a language delightful and easy-to-learn are usually at odds with the qualities that let it scale well to large corporate projects. https://t.co/oKGQYr1Yr1
