The Apple Maps news from yesterday wasn't really about a redesign of the app. With this latest update, Apple is no longer licensing TomTom data for the US, and instead now relies on the company's own underlying framework for domestic navigation https://t.co/v4LnC0TO2k

In 2020, iPadOS doesn’t convey app focus in split-screen mode. But window focus was apparent *over 35 years ago* on the original Macintosh. It was only black and white! But today when we have millions of colors, we don’t indicate focus well. pic.twitter.com/M0MN0Hq7NZ

As a dynamic linker engineer I sometimes wish C++ did not exist…mostly while dealing performance issues related to maintaining pointer uniqueness of ODR symbols across shared library boundaries.

Hulu CEO was a Fox guy, not a Disney guy. But fact that they’re not replacing him is more telling: Hulu has been absorbed into Disney, which is pretty much what Disney execs said would happen. https://t.co/waeph3sXDh

I tried to replicate my app's GUI using SwiftUI. Couldn't get the basic layout right: standard controls do not size themselves correctly. Also, popup buttons do not draw their menu correctly. SwiftUI is plain broken on macOS. pic.twitter.com/xqzZiXt1a8

Late, but for the record this is what you get when an operation fails (returns nil/NO) but doesn't set the NSError out-parameter.

(If you don't signal failure with nil/NO, you'll need to use the swift_error attribute: https://t.co/nSiZACDFbb. Indeed, no docs is a problem.)

Some days I just sit and think about how great these green turn-by-turn signs in Apple Maps were. Now we just get boring black. pic.twitter.com/R398ZOcVwb

It’s all about the “you used an associated type OR touched Self so this protocol hates you now and I hate you.” Also the inability to auto-synthesize variables means if I have like 20 variables I end up creating a struct, but protocols can’t have embedded types.

Not sure why, but lately, *every* time I backup my iPhone to my Mac, it asks me again whether or not I want to trust the device. Is this normal? 🤔

Oh, I forgot: the devices have to be on the same WiFi network (more accurately, they seem to have to be in a single address pool serviced by the same WiFi router). So if you don't have WiFi — even though there is no actual reason you need it! — you cannot use Continuity Camera.

So, literally, if you physically plug an iOS 12+ device into a Mac running Mojave or better, you can't use Continuity Camera unless:
• You have Internet access
• You turn on all the radios
• You use iCloud
• You comply with Apple's 2FA regime

That's some quality work.

There's plenty of iPad's multitasking UI that I think is great at a conceptual level, but affordances (like a tab bar, or window controls) just aren't there for users who don't want to have to learn arcane gestures. Even I lose track of what windows are open in iPad's junk-drawer

10.14.6, 10.15.x/iOS 13 have been extremely buggy for others in the office so I’m staying far far away until it stabilizes.
