Apple ships batteries that can’t support an iPhone’s normal operation for even 18 months. I think we should all consider this a defect.

Papering over it with software is dishonest.

Another great thing about USB-C: when you try to attach three hard drives at once and the system freaks out, and it takes down your DisplayPort monitor, too. Took several restarts and plugging and unplugging into alternate ports before the Mac would provide a video signal again.

> Like I said, much of this is situational. I just TRIED IT!
- While charging my iPhone 7 gives a GB4 score of ~2400
- When fully charged and disconnected, it gives a score of ~3400.

How many of those GB4 bumps correspond to phones tested while charging?

Does battery smoothing happen on a Mac? Based on Apple’s statement, it doesn’t. I used a 2012 MacBook Pro for four years, never changed the battery, and it never randomly shut down. Why does an iPhone require it? (I assume there's an explanation but Apple needs to educate here.)

(b) Look at the list of conditions. Many of these are NOT end of battery life issues, they are TEMPORARY issues where Apple is conditioning performance to match the battery to preserve the phone's life.

I get the whole “it’s better to clock your phone slower rather than have it randomly crash” aspect to this story. It’s more the fact that Apple wasn’t upfront about it, and thus we’ve all been telling people “no, your phone isn’t getting any slower”. Turns out, it was.

This has absolutely nothing to do with me. This has everything to do with the fact that the company that has stood for good UX and protecting consumers for the last 40 years just admitted they slow down old devices without telling you. This is a black day.

What's the scandal, Bob?
Batteries become able to deliver less current with age. What are Apple's choices?
- ship phones that are slow on day one
- do nothing (then the phone hangs/battery swells) as the phone grows older
- match performance to batter capacity
