Magic Knows Best - MyFirstistheFourth - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]
Every witch or wizard coming of age was required to choose an older magical mentor, a grounder, to guide them as their powers matured. Ritualized sex magic assuring their stability after the period of maturation. Harry's choice comes as a surprise to everyone but he is merely happy to be having a normal wizarding experience now that Voldemort is gone. He should have known better, nothing with Harry could ever be normal.

My science-policy students had to follow 10 scientists on twitter for the semester and report out what they thought worked well and what was ineffective for reaching a broad audience. There were some common findings. They followed ~90 different scientists. #scicomm

Fic | Nero Wolfe | "Matador" by Parhelion
"I will never know what tipped me off, but I think it may have been the slight flare of Wolfe's nostrils, like a predator that scents something hostile. Time seemed to slow. I leapt forward, and he started to turn, probably to try and shield me. I was almost fast enough. I got it away and aloft with one arm, and knocked Wolfe off his feet with the rest of me. The package arced behind his desk, and it must have hit something on the way to the floor. My world went white and struck me."

2018 Valencia MotoGP Test Wednesday Round Up: New Engines, New Chassis, KTM's Front End Problems, And A Vintage Rookie Class | MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks
It's been a difficult test at Valencia. The weather simply hasn't played ball. Tuesday started wet, took a few hours to dry out, then rain started falling around 3pm, meaning the riders effectively had around two and a half usable hours on track.

Ducati Corse boss Gigi Dall’Igna has always enjoyed lobbing his little pitlane tech bombs. First were the wings, then the salad box and now a kind of parallelogram rear end.

"This makes 1:1s with your reports one of the most important things you can spend your time on. He suggests the agenda for the 1:1 should be set by the report, but also says you should cover current problems, plans and what’s worrying them/what they see as future problems."

The Model Thinker by Scott E. Page | Basic Books
From the stock market to genomics laboratories, census figures to marketing email blasts, we are awash with data. But as anyone who has ever opened up a spreadsheet packed with seemingly infinite lines of data knows, numbers aren’t enough: we need to know how to make those numbers talk. In The Model Thinker, social scientist Scott E. Page shows us the mathematical, statistical, and computational models–from linear regression to random walks and far beyond–that can turn anyone into a genius. At the core of the book is Page’s “many-model paradigm,” which shows the reader how to apply multiple models to organize the data, leading to wiser choices, more accurate predictions, and more robust designs. The Model Thinker provides a toolkit for business people, students, scientists, pollsters, and bloggers to make them better, clearer thinkers, able to leverage data and information to their advantage.
