The Diversity Gap in Children’s Book Publishing, 2018 | Lee & Low Blog
Starting in 2014, the number of diverse books being published increased substantially. Like 2016, there were major award wins for authors of color in 2017, including a Newbery Medal for Erin Entrada Kelly, a Newbery Honor for Jason Reynolds, Renée Watson, Derrick Barnes and Gordon C. James, and a Morris Award and Printz Honor for Angie Thomas. Not much has changed since last year when Black, Latinx, and Native authors combined wrote just 6% of new children’s books published. It could also be the lack of opportunities and/or access given to African American authors as KT Horning noted last year . It’s great that the number of diverse books continues to increase, but we’re still left with similar questions from last year:

I Played Fortnite and Figured Out the Universe - The Atlantic
In Fortnite Battle Royale, the world’s most popular video game, released last September and today being played by millions of people at a time, you’re dropped into the sky above a richly rendered island, 99 other players all parachuting down alongside you. The second book in Liu’s trilogy, The Dark Forest , is named for a theory of cosmopolitics articulated by one of its characters that addresses the mismatch between the apparent scale of the universe (vast) and the observed number of high-tech civilizations (one). The reward for players who achieve victory royale is that, in all subsequent games, they drop to the island not with a bulky parachute but a svelte parasol—a dozen murderous Mary Poppinses cutting down through the noobs. And I would have been there among them, awkwardly uprocking, or worming in place, or stiffly snaking, or back-spinning like a broken rotor, and I would have looked up and seen a kid, slightly older, facing me, smiling to himself, then moving across the floor by popping up alternating heels, gliding in reverse, walking on the moon. In the video, a grinning, shirtless Glover dances through a giant warehouse, occasionally accompanied by black school children in uniform, as chaotic scenes of violence unfold behind him—and are sometimes enacted by him.

In Saskatchewan, the Stanley trial's jury selection reveals a legal injustice
Stables’s arrest and conviction was a significant development for the area where, despite the evidence a white man had been responsible for many of the thefts, social media posts indicated many locals instead listened to their gut. An attempted robbery of a farm worker later that year prompted many in the community to arm themselves— a move so alarming that the RCMP made a public plea for them to back off the vigilantism and let police do their jobs. In the wake of that outcome, Jacksonville’s Michael David Dunn drew and fired on an SUV after an argument over loud music coming from a vehicle, killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis. North of the border, Ontario Superior Court justice Cynthia Petersen spent years advocating for legislative changes to the jury selection process for this very reason. Only eight years prior to Petersen’s essay, the quiet town of Weymouth Falls, N.S., came into national focus when Graham Jarvis, a Black labourer, was shot and killed by Jeff Mullen, a white man from nearby Weaver Settlement.

Turn the Post Office Into a Bank? First Check Japan - Bloomberg
Standing on a footbridge in 2005, I watched him from above as he gave a speech to a crowd outside a train station as he thundered, cajoled and generally mesmerized the assembled throng. The problem was that Japan’s postal bank didn’t just take deposits — it also lent money, including to so-called zombie companies , or inefficient enterprises that survive due to below-market-rate loans. Commercial banks have little incentive to serve low-profit poor customers, so it makes sense for the government to step in and give these people things like checking accounts and ATMs for free. Governments have resorted to draconian measures to claw their money back from borrowers — making student debt less easy to expunge in personal bankruptcy, or even revoking people’s professional licenses when they don’t pay up. Politically connected businesspeople could sustain uncompetitive businesses on lines of cheap postal credit, out-competing more efficient companies and slowing the growth of the U.S. economy.
