Hulu lost $920 million in 2017
Hulu lost $920 million in 2017 http://ift.tt/2BP09BS Prospective http://ift.tt/2BkiIwr February 9, 2018 at 01:24AM

The streaming service posted a significant loss in 2017 after its parent companies Disney, 21st Century Fox, Comcast, and Time Warner invested $1 billion, according to a filing by Comcast. Hulu’s $920 million plummet starkly stands out against its loss of just $531 million in 2016.

But the bleeding won’t stop there. According to estimates reported by Variety, Hulu’s losses will continue to sink to about $1.7 billion in 2018, with its parent companies hoping to counterbalance that by investing $1.5 billion this year. As of last year, the streaming service said it had more than 17 million subscribers for its on-demand and live packages.

On it’s latest earnings call, Disney, which plans to launch its own streaming service in 2019, described the mounting losses on its Hulu investment. In particular, chief executive Bob Iger pointed to the high costs of licensing programming and Hulu’s “ramping up their volume” on original programming. He singled out “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which recently won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, as a sign that the bet was paying off.

Ford GT40 Mark IV Heading to Auction | News | Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog
To the casual observer, Ford’s dominance of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the late 1960s can seem almost monolithic. After all, the winning was all done by GT40s, wasn’t it? While the small-block Mark I cars that triumphed in 1968 and 1969 and the big-block Mark IIs—which brought Ford its first overall victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe in 1966—shared real visual and mechanical continuity, the 1967 Mark IV was its own thing entirely.
The GT40 had been an Anglo-American proposition from the start, with roots in Eric Broadley’s lovely little Lola Mark 6, but the Mark IV was to be a star-spangled affair, meant to erase all doubt that American know-how was superior to Italian 12-cylinder prancy-horsey voodoo—that it wasn’t the luck of the limeys that had spurred the Yanks on to victory the previous year. Never mind that the winning car had been driven by a pair of Kiwis named Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren.

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package First Drive | Review | Car and Driver
Meet the 911 R with a massive discount.
Here’s something intuition won’t tell you: The visceral Porsche 911 GT3 with the Touring package, which mandates a manual transmission and replaces the standard GT3’s freestanding rear wing with a version of the less effective variable spoiler fitted to most of the 911 line, is actually slower than the big-wing car. Despite a 221-pound difference in downforce at their respective top speeds, the GT3 Touring, with its retractable spoiler, is less slippery and is therefore slightly slower. The top-speed difference doesn’t matter (199 versus 196 mph), but the downforce might if you’re on a track.
HIGHS
Goes like a GT3, looks like a workaday 911; increased rear visibility.
LOWS
Lost opportunity to be mistaken for a wanker; less downforce but more drag matters to track rats.
